So which physics model are they using? I'm pretty sure it's not the RealLife(tm) one. That being the case how the hell are they going to upgrade it.
We have some very sophisticated software for newtonian physics modelling. We already have very fast general purpose hardware. Is this add on any more than just neon lighting for gamers?
I'm currently building a variety of SBC with Z80 and 6502 chips. What I'd really like is a transputer or at least plans to build something similar with Z80 chips. Did I mention I have over 100 of the things.
Energy conservation doesn't solve the energy problem!
The problem is that we are using energy far quicker than it is created or the by products of energy production can be consumed.
All conservation does it make the energy source last longer it does not solve the under lying problem. I tend to the idea that prolonging our dependence is a very bad idea.
Had a similar experience a number of years ago. I've been coding since I was 12, ZX81, then went to work straight from high school, coding all sorts of stuff.
After about five years got the chance to be a manager, took it with the agreement I'd try it for six months. End of six months I wanted back to programming. A senior manager couldn't understand why I'd want to go back and told me I was more valuable to the company as a manager. I ended up quitting as I was never allowed to go back to being just a coder.
I'm now in my late thirties and have been a coder ever since, I've got my BSc.(HONS) Computer Sci., whenever I see a management postion opening that I would be expected to take I make sure my managers know I'm not interested and why. It's not a lack of ambition just I do not see management as any sort of career progression. It's fun to watch other managers try and grasp that:-)
I fully expect to be coding until I drop. My only secret is that I can live on a lot less than I make, nobody and I mean nobody can hold me over a pay cheque.
The next stage for me is a Phd and a circumnavigation.
Regulators, auditors are not concerned with real risk. What they want is a stack of documentation they can point to as an example of how they are doing what they need to do.
Senior Mgmt only cares that the regulators and auditors are happy. Who cares if it's dragging the company under.
I'm working under CFR 21 Part 11. This piece of crap does nothing to protect my company. The things it asks for are basic IT functions wrapped up in a layer of paperwork. It costs my company $$$.
I've worked under BS-5750 & ISO-9000 wonderful systems for producing paperwork and employing admin assistants. Useless for protecting systems.
To sum up. I'm pretty certain that only a few IT workers think about these matters in any depth. If that is the case how can we reasonably expect any other business function to think about them. The problem is that the people who came up with the various regs weren't thinking very deep, the business users didn't think and only one or two IT folks were thinking.
I want something similar. I'm probably going with a firewire raid tower.
I only want to use the disk on one machine so NAS is overkill. I only need moderate speed so SCSI is out. I need >1gb of logical drive space. I want hot swap. I don't need to run another OS, just a dvice to manage the array and connect to my desktop.
Cost is likel to be around $2k. I might get lucky on ebay but it's unlikely.
It's not that the requirements are undefined, that is problem but not the major one. Every project I've worked on has had requirement changes.
The major problem is that management and techies do not fully comprehend what a lack of requirements means.
If open source is showing anything it is showing that release early release often is the way to go. Let the users pay with your system as early as possible and be prepared to change everything because it's doubtful they know what they want either.
Techies should be writing code that can be easily ported/changed/rebuilt/removed fluid software. The number of arguments I've had with other developers who want to build a system the one right way. Then they cry foul when the requirements change.
Managers need to get on board with the change culture. Requirments is at best a guess, don't go planning a release date based on them. If you have to implement on a fixed date then you'd better be ready to go live with a non-complete system. Plan for a release 2 etc.
Of course, we've known this since the 70s. I wonder how long before people realise that software should be configured not custom built.
wake up and smell the coffe, war is not about obeying rules. It's about winnning.
The US army is going to use lawyers because it cannot police it's own servers. I do so look forward to you explaining that to the press.
Given that once again the US Army cannot deal with problems in a rational, pragmnatic and effective manner I suggest you always do what the army does in this situation. Call for the marines.
The US imports a lot of goods, in fact a hell of a lot of goods. Most of these goods come in 40ft containers. These contianers can enter the shipping system at a number of points, very rarely are they opened during transit.
If I was of a certain mind and wanted to detontate my pet nuke how would I get it into position. I would not hijack a ship, to much effort and risk. I would load it into a container and hook up a pocket GPS to the trigger.
I'm wondering how long before some bright CEO decides that they can cut out the distribution network and provide straight to the consumer.
BitTorrent/NetFlix take care of all my TV needs. I also wonder if NetFlix could not distribute instead of the cable company. For a fee send me a DVD a week with the latest XYZ show on it. Would seem to b a huge business waiting to be tapped.
Why should the next 20 be different from the last 20?
Having almost got 20 years as a developer I can see no change in mind set amongst IT workers or Senior executives that would allow for any improvement in efficiency.
So in 20 years:-
I'll be using some new and improved language that is still no better than Smalltalk or C.
I'll be working on some hardware that can process everything faster but still get's nothing done.
My customers will still be customising rather than configuring software.
So which physics model are they using? I'm pretty sure it's not the RealLife(tm) one. That being the case how the hell are they going to upgrade it.

The replica I is a neat idea.

Maybe I'll switch from using Qemu for my kernel sabotage. I would call it kernel hacking but that would indicate some proficiency :-(

You must be easily amazed.
Nobody cares.
Read that agian.

Go look up caste as it applies to india.
Yes it's amazing what time can be used for in a cube.

Ebay?
Yep,
put them in a museum but how about PDF or PS copies on line. I want to read this stuff but not at the price being asked.
Hmmm,
go and check what happened to the original signatories of the constitution.

Edison contributed very little, his staff however contributed hugely and have never been given the credit.
Prior art Dick Chenney?

This is going to make the US safer? How?
Let's think about this for a second.
The US imports a lot of goods, in fact a hell of a lot of goods. Most of these goods come in 40ft containers. These contianers can enter the shipping system at a number of points, very rarely are they opened during transit.

Twoo words Beer and Choclate. Waffles indeed.
Same here.

Nice troll :-)
Ehh, somebody hitted me with a brick!
Robert Johnson was blind?
