  1. Clones sell... but who's complaining? on XPde: Cloning the XP Interface · · Score: 2

Let me preface this by saying I do not use *nix as a desktop OS. I run FreeBSD on my router-box, I don't want my router looking pretty... I want it to be secure.

But for those who do run *nix as a desktop OS, there are so many alternative interfaces (how many themes for Enlightenment are there?) that completely blow XP out of the water, I cannot imagine where this deep desire for an XP clone comes from.

Considering most people who chosse *nix as their desktop OS are those that want an extremely customizable experience, I just don't see this getting a tremendous amount of love... but as other posters have pointed out, probably a fair amount of legal trouble.

I'm confussed, are you anti-american or anti-american tax money going to research?

This reads like one of the many trolls here, and I'll hand it to ya, it's so well written even I'm responding. Let me go through point by point, this I'm sure we'll both enjoy.

    1) $5,100,000 is chump change for R&D. When you get out into the real world you will be amazed how much money is getting thrown around to study the amount of time it takes for Ketchup to be poured out of a bottle. (I'm not making this up, there really was a federal grant provided to a research project like this.)

    2) This is just insane. If you hate americans, why don't you want us killing ourselves with our personal aircrafts? You know I bet the % of american auto acidents in personal vechicles vs commercial/public transportation is about 90% to. Doesn't mean we're not going to drive to work tommarow. You give us personal helicopters and we'll be flying them drunk, I assure you. We got places to go people to see and your % doesn't mean a good goddamn to the impressive profit you'd see selling a personal aircraft like this.
But wait, I know... that's just the evil american capitalist in me. Argh I am such a friggen infadel! Would someone blow me up already?

    3) This is also insane, wtf was I thinking when I called this well written. Nevermind, I must have been looking at something else entirely. This 3rd argument makes it pretty obvious you didn't even read the story and are making shit up as you go.

Pick your favorite, Steven King/Hawking Dead at 55, or the ever present "Fucking Americans all you care about is __________ when there are people starving in the world!". Personally I like the trolls that argue over which one Steven should be trolled about being dead.(common trolls where's your solidarity?)

Showing support for one's favorite show (not mine, Farscape hurts my eyes) serves mearly to make a stand.

Showing support or opposition to political issues requires advocacy. A bunch of geeks saying "I am not a terrorist." doesn't help. Noone becomes aware of the issues involved.

Look at Political Ads, they never tell you wtf the issues are, aside from showing support for the top 5 focus-tested party lines. In order to raise awareness and enlighten the nearly comatose masses you would need alot more than 30 seconds.

Now let's say you ran a 3 min nationwide spot on Survivor (the total cost of which would probably require every /.ers salary for 4 months) and you make a solid presentation of the facts. The facts don't mean jack shit to most americans because they identify with being "Democrat" or "Republican" and will simply dismiss anything that doesn't appeal to them as "pinko hippy nonsense".

I wish there was a way to stop this, but there isn't. Every day we sink deeper. I just hope I can get a job over seas before they build the wall.

Look I love FreeBSD, don't get me wrong. My server runs FreeBSD, my router box runs FreeBSD... but my desktop machine is running Windows 2000.

For me Windows 2000 is just like Linux, except it runs desktop apps which is a nice bonus for a desktop OS. It's not the interface, believe me (I refused to go to Windows 95 for the longest time because of my preference towards CLI). It's just the simple fact that there are so many more exciting apps for Windows.

Whenever there is a neat new technology out it always comes out for Windows first, then *nix, then Mac. (Recent Examples: P2P, PAR, Bottler, etc.) As a fan of technology I want to run the technology as soon as I can download it... not wait for a port! Sure there are ports for nearly every P2P protocol out for NIX, and there are PAR clients, and yes there's even Buttler... but these versions are always months behind in development compared to their Windows counterparts.

Going hand in hand with technology is, of course, games. One can only play so much Tux Racer before going back to Windows for Mafia or the latest Half-Life/Quake Mod.

Your "vast left wing conspiracy" is quite confussed, and leads to some pretty concerning questions about your sanity and maturity. I am trying to think of any alternative explinations, but none come to mind... Let me see if I've got this straight.

Let's say I'm a socialist (as left as it gets) and pay 50% of my earnings in taxes so that government social programs can flurish and no man, woman, or child goes hungry or homeless (See Also: Sweden) it is selfish of me to spend $500 of my remaining income however I chose instead of feeding the hungry.... how?

Your whole premise is lacking a clue, and if you really want to find a reason to spread this politically motivated hate you're going to need to aspire towards some sort of education.

In my experience no long comute is complete without an audiobook to take you along on your journey.

Plus my mp3 collection has gotten larger than most radio station archieve's... so I'm not exactly hurting for new musical content.

The killer app of satalite is more apt to be something we can't already get. Such as Howard Stern live (or delayed for the west coast). You can grab it off the newsgroups a day late... but it's not the same thing as listening to it live. And considering how limited his and other radio personalities' markets are, satalite could bring them into alot more homes/cars.

I've been doing alot of traveling in new england lately, and haven't been able to hear howard since I left NYC.
