  1. Remember Iben Browning? on Earthquake Prediction Months In Advance · · Score: 4, Interesting

One of my fondest memories from high school was Iben Browning's earthquake prediction. He claimed a massive earth quake was going to shake the New Madrid fault around 1990. See http://geology.about.com/library/weekly/aa030903a. htm. Several months before the predicted date we had a 4.x quake during school. Everyone thought this was clear evidence Browning's prediction would come true. The school board cancelled class for 2 days surrounding the predicted date. No earthquake ever occurred. He helped us out and made the merchants in our area who jacked up their prices rich.

In 1992, I had a US Robotics Courier V.Everything modem that cost $500. I had to purchase a 16650 UART chip for my serial port to get high speed transfers. It seemed like a lot of software was still distributed on 3.5" disks. Fast forward 12 years later to 2004. After all that time, modems run at exactly the same speed. V.92(?) was fast when the 386 and 486 were kings but not any more.

  5. Beatles-Apple lawsuit on A Look Back at Apple's 2003 · · Score: 1, Interesting

Curious how there is no mention of the Beatles-Apple lawsuit in the piece. It has been covered on Slashdot previously: http://apple.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/11/ 232230&mode=thread&tid=107&tid=141&tid=187&tid=188 . In a nutshell, the Beatles Apple Corp. and Apple Computer had an agreement where Apple Computer would never get in the music business. It seems Apple has blatantly violated this and wants to give the Beatles free money.

  14. SEC complaint on SCO Execs Dumping Stock · · Score: 4, Interesting

The SEC should really look into this. The lawsuit is totally bogus. SCO is definetely not acting in the best interests of its shareholders. SCO seems to be acting in the best interests of Microsoft. It is very curious how Microsoft and SCO reached some kind of licensing agreement in the context of this lawsuit. It is also curious how SCO claims that a single company purchased one of their bogus licenses without disclosing the name. There needs to be full disclosure about the relationship between SCO and Microsoft.
