    I'm not aware of a human culture that has regulated it's population to a sustainable level. (I know china has made moves this way, but I still don't think 1.2 billion people is sustainable there)

    good, easy to read even for non scientist types. Also, I've heard some of Hawking's stuff is great but haven't read any.

    Hmm, that's weird. I thought that Hewpaq and the other tier 1's (not dell perhaps) IBM were shipping bare boxes that you then added procs/memory/storage/expansion cards and OS's too. Hmm, just checked the website www.compaq.com and burrowed down to proliant servers, no mention of included OS and at the list prices, can't include a windows license. We must have been envisioning different products in our statements. What brand are you buying that are preloaded?

    traditionally, you buy servers without an OS, then you use an Open license agreement to buy your windows OS and Client access licenses. It's not like desktops...

    I'm on the trolley with you. I used to do the same thing for friends and relatives. EVERY maxtor drive that i built or saw installed into a pc failed within 2 years of VERY casual use in different homes with different environments/power supplies/users/everything (we're talking on the order of 8 computers). I have not had a WD drive fail on me. Taht's what I told all of them to install back in 96 when they were buying the "less expensive" maxtors. I've finally convinced all of my associates to accept nothing else but WD or perhpas IBM/Seagate, but I ask this question. "Isn't it worth $20 more to get a drive that you won't have to reinstall and RMA in 12 months?" The answer is "yes".

    are you saying that electrical impulses in copper travel at 76% of the speed of light in a vacuum (3x10^6 m/s)? Didn't know what the actual speed was, would have guessed they'd be closer together.

    It varies from dept to dept. Most have a physical requirement to start. Many also have an annual thing after that, but some don't.

    yes, i hadn't heard of them either until I starting looking for cheap nvidia cards, then found that they and PNY tended to be very affordable. It will be bad for enthusiasts like most of slashdot because they had hot chipsets on very affordable cards with no driver enhancement or any other stuff. Just fast cards for a good price.

    I think the real issue is that this will train a generation of kids to expect ZERO privacy and be ready to embrace big brother with open arms.

    I'm a stepdad and I know how hard it is to keep an eye on kids. We worry when the 11 year old rollerblades the 1/2 mile through the subdivision to grandma's house, so there is appeal to this technology, but still, from a larger social perspective I think it's very, very dangerous to indoctrinate ourselves and kids into thinking that it's "normal" to be tracked electronically.

    See someone's comment above regarding the all in one chip that is coming.

    acually, a lot of big companies with select agreements would just as soon not pay hte windows tax either. they pay MS a fee for eachpc they run regardless of what OS it comes in with. On some agreements, they can try to get credit for whatever a PC came with, but it's much simpler if it came with nothing I think. Not sure how much as changed in the last couple of years since I last dealt with MS licensing though.

    that's true generally, except for the 7 idle WPPS (whoops to the people, Washington Public Power Service to the beurocrats) plants aroudn the state in various states of build. Last I heard, two of these plants were "pretty close" to completion and could probably be up and running in a couple of years tops since I believe all the permitting is done and most of the heavy construction. they were stalled in the 70's when everyone got anti nuke for awhile. But I'm sure they'd be happy to sell CA power for their electric cars, empty datacenters, and AC's for a fair price if we could get the wherewithal to bring a couple of them online.

    There are two reasons why dvd sales are good while music sales are bad.

    1. You cannot download DVD quality movies in a reasonable amount of time, but you can download 256bit mp3 in reasonable time.

    2. DVD's and CD's have almost the same cost now!!! You can get most movies for $15-25 but CD's are 10-18 USD, and I think most people think movies should cost more than CD's. They cost much more to make and are visual as well as audio.

    Just some ideas.

    I haven't played much SC and definately not WC3 yet, but am I the only one that wishes WC2 would still work OK on a new PC? It's so fast that even with mouse sensitivty turned down, the slightest bump of the mouse on the screen edge takes you to the edge of the map.

    I'd play wc2 today if I could.

    just some pining, move along.

    If the company you are working for is nice and you have a good relationship and your only reason for leaving was the pay, then you might stay. If you don't really trust your current employer,t hen you might be best to leave and learn some new things (but possibly jump into a bad place) on the new job.

    Your current employer might expect a bit more out of you though if you accept their counter.

    Look at the spirit of it. If they are just trying to get something finished I'd beware.

    Sometimes people are pretty quick on the uptake. I had just installed kazaa lite on win32 and had it up for maybe 2 minutes. I was grabbing one song taht I wanted to hear right then and hadn't set up all the permissions for directory shares and a guy messaged me asking why I wasn't sharing any files. I told him the truth and he seemed fine with it, but wow, I was on like 2 minutes and was being asked about why I wasn't sharing. They are diligent. I think that's good because it keeps the leaches to a minimum.

    Just my experience.

    I agree except for one thing. You said "boot/shutdown time is almost instant". This is not so with ps/2 I can get my pc up and going in about the time it takes the ps/2 to boot and load gta3

    there is an external IR attachment that plugs into the tivo and aims at your cable/satellite box. it comes with tivo. it sends IR signals (as your cable box remote would) to change channels)

    SUpposed to work pretty well, but I'm on analog cable an staying there until they kick me off of it, so I haven't tried it.

    Can another user identify you using a backdoor or is this truly anonymous?

    I know that Morpheus had an issue where there is an available port they can telnet to and get your user ID and whatnot.

    If it's truly anonymous and secure then dandy, otherwise, no thanks. I don't need a big lawsuit slapped on me someday.

    I see the point you are making, but like most US citizens, I almost never go to a non US site, so why should I pay to do so? The only place I even rarely go is .de for lavasoft updates and to the UK for a bbc link occassionally. I'd say 99% at least of my traffic is within the US, and I'd bet that is typical for most users here. Sorry.

    My Gigabyte board already has the ability to flash bios from win32. so far OK, but when this is widespread, it could be a hole. depends if the MB makers use a common method or not.
