    I think he is going to get a 50%-50% response from us. It's good to have a good paying job with no stress, but boring as hell. And it is equally good to have an "interesting" or "exciting" job where you don't dread coming to work, but look forward, and having supporting co-workers and challenges. But, then in the new start-up you will be busy as hell with no sleep trying to keep as many plates spinning as possible.

    Since he doesn't have children, not married (except for a girlfriend which equals HIGH MAINTENANCE and sex sex sex), low cost of living, it's basically a coin toss. It sounds like its going to be either a gut instinct guess, or he needs to gather more information.

  5. Re:It's all about the DBA on Open Source vs. the Database Vendors · · Score: 0

    That's all and well to have a "specialist" that you can turn to make sure everything is up and running and can answer all your questions as if he/she were the actual developer of the product. Compare that to the Stargate SG-1 show where you have Samantha Carter that knows everything about the Stargate,astrophysics , theoretical particle physics, chemistry, etc. etc. and have an answer for everything, BUT once she is gone it makes maintaining or solving problems 10x10^999999 times harder to fix. We shouldn't need a freakin' PhD to keep a database humming along, get new development on the road, or solve day-to-day problems. But, then we do need the "specialists" to solve the very difficult problems. Yes, make him the head of all the databases as the goto person to answer the real tough problems, but for the rest of the newbies, KISS.

    Where are the endings for the Sega Master System?

    The capture card. If someone can creater either a HDTV CableCard ready tuner or a non-CableCard Component Capture card then you will see HTPC blast into space in terms of consumer products and homebrewed projects.

    Right now we are limited to OTA* and Cable QAM256 unencrypted channels. I want to be able to record the Sopranos in HDTV quality and playback. So far, I think MythTV and the HD-3000 is the closes we can get without spending thousand to tens-of-thousands of dollars to accomplish what I want.

    But, believe it or not, I'm going to build my HTPC very very soon and not worry about the HDTV I can't get. There aren't that many HDTV channels to worth jumping through firey hoops to get the WAF* satisfied.

    * NOTE:
    OTA = Over-The-Air
    WAF = Wife Acceptance Factor

  23. Re:$100 per child? on Preview Of The $100 Laptop · · Score: 0

    As a poor underprivileged kid in the 80s and early 90s, we couldn't afford anything electronic, it was in elementary and middle school where I first touched computers in a computer lab. We you had to share two or more to a computer station. It was a magic to me. I was lucky enough to have a brother-in-law that taught me some rudementary computer knowledge and some DOS commands. As the years went on and I self-taught myself was I got the change to be in front of a computer I got better. I was able to get one of those summer jobs where they pay you to go to school, where then I became the teachers pet in one of the computer classes where you take match and english lessons on the computer. I would basically be her help desk support and help the kids out on the computer. Later in high school I took QBasic classes where I was one of the stars, and helped to get nice pretty girls to work with me since I did all the work; same deal in phyics and computer science classes.

    When it came time to go to college (again, poor so I depended on my grades to get me scholarships and grants, didn't expect nor got money from anyone else) I had some money left over to get either a car, to go back and forth to school, or a computer. I decided to get a bus pass and a computer. I haven't looked back. I eventually took that self-teaching skill that has benefited me so much that I eventually dropped out of college pursing a physics degree to spending full time on computers.

    Now, I love computers to death and make great $$$ (around $ 145K / year) doing IT Project Managent after years of application development. One of these days I'll get my degree in physics. Those computer labs in school didn't teach anything hardcore to me, but they've sparked a love affair that will last for the rest of my life.
