Not having rtfa yet, I'm going to guess that it not compatible with the ipod becuase of the file format (wmf?). FairPlay is more about playing music from iTunes music store on players. It doesn't have to do with what formats the iPod itself can play.

If you don't launch Dashboard it doesn't waste your resources. Once you launch it, the applets stay active and start draining your system. I hardly use Dashboard but when I do I'll kill the dock when I'm done. This quits the applets so they aren't active in the background. I use an apple script that is launched by control-f12 that kills the dock for me.

  10. Re:Wow, news to me on Plugin For Winamp Allows Downloading From iPod · · Score: 1

Uhh, you can copy music off an iPod. The trick is that they are in a hidden folder. And honestly, it's not that hard to have hidden folders show up in a file manager. The only DRM issue is with music bought from iTunes Music Store, which is an issue with most online music stores. Sure you can't just plug your ipod in to anyones computer and use itunes to take music off the ipod. One assumption is that if you are connecting the ipod to somene elses computer then the music on that computer is probably not yours. Making it slightly difficult to tranfer music off the ipod probably helps keep the RIAA's rabid dogs out of Apples way. On the other hand it would be nice to be able to use an ipod with itunes on any computer that has been authorized to the ipod owners account.

  11. Re:About Costa Rica on Costa Rica May Criminalize VoIP · · Score: 1

AS a quick addition to this ( also having grown up in CR) The local telecom anounced last week that it will offer a new service that includes VoIP, at least thats what my mom explained to me since she still lives there. This has been one of the things that law makers are currently dealing with and the article isn't up to date with recent decisions. They admit that outlawing VoIP would be like the post office having email outlawed. So it becomes a matter of giving people what they are entitled to while keeping the telecom in the loop and that can be like balancing on a razor blade.
Another problem is that they want to distinguish between legitimate use (someone who pays for internet service and calls from home) and what they call fraudulent use. There are places that will sell international calls at lower rates in large volumes. That is they really want to stop. 1 in 5 calls made from CR to the US are VoIP based.

Just for kicks I looked up what it would cost me to have a $6 Asimov book shipped two-day shipping. It was nearly $10. I don't understand where the $1500 comes from if you can order 9 books (ordered separately) for $57 and still save nearly $10 on shipping.

Somewhere in the GIMP literature they do (or did) mention that it's still not something to be used prfessionally. It has been used for some profesional applications, but there is a reason it's not the top choice for pro's. After all people still choose to spend hunders of dollars on Photoshop and they do it for a reason. It's been a while since I've used GIMP but I know it didn't and am prety sure it still doesn't handle things like profiles (correct me if I'm wrong). This is one reason I don't use it, if I can't guarantee color quality when I print or import the image it it does me no good. It's an excelent program but it still needs to grow before becoming a professional tool to substitue Photoshop.

  22. whaa whaa on Review: Planet of the Apes · · Score: 1

Geeze, if you wanted to see the original movie then why not just go and rent it. And yes I have done that myself, ie. Godzilla (you know the Hollywood version). So back to talking about POTA: If movies have to have "...a towering old-school Hollywood superhero..." in order to have a message, then your right this movie is pointless. Well (un)forunately my pre-net mind doesn't agree. Well maybe it does a little, your right, Whalbergs character isn't the: I'm the strongest, most enlightened, evil destroying, unstopable, and would have a brilliantly chromed armor if armors were still in, type of hero. But that doesn't make this a bad movie. The movie isn't about one man trying save a planet. It's about him trying to save himself, and get back to his own time. Did you notice that there was substance to be found in other parts of the movie? Equality still seemed to be an issue here, you know that side of the movie where humans were treated like animals, yeah, Whalbergs character isn't fighting for that but it's still there. There are things about Burton's movie that you brush off because they're different than Heston in the original version. It's a different movie geared towards todays audience. Did you notice that the original isn't identical to the book? It seemed to me that Burton's movie said something about how it's not always possible to fix everything we break. We live in a day of age where everything can be fixed and ideas of prevention aren't mainstream, but don't you agree that the end says that not everything can be fixed. In the movie it's one persons mistake that changes history permanently, He thinks that by getting away he can fix it. Remember he represents our world, our attitudes, and our self motivation. Sure it's not a movie that will change the world, make us better people who live in peace and harmony but it's still a good movie and it still touches issues. If you believe that the Original is a perfect telling of the story then don't watch this one but if you think a different interpretation/representation would be interesting then I think you'll atleast enjoy it.
