Mark my words, in 5-10 years, MS will be talking about how they rescued Linux/OS from ravenous hippies like RMS and ESR. Look how slowly they've been admitting their faults without ever really giving credit where it's due. Just recently, they've said that "Linux is a threat". Eventually they'll "buddy up", and then when the OS community won't let them fork code -- probably Linux or Mach, XFree86, Mozilla -- they'll say, "Look, those meanies won't share their fun toys!" And the media (already owned by MS and Disney anyway) will eat it up. This is a game that will probably play more in the public eye than in a court room, so now's the time to be asking ourselves, "What can we do to let everyone know what we're really about?" The only way OS can beat MS is if we plan far, far ahead.

Doesn't a partnership mean that Apache owns the .Net modules that are made available for their software and not just Microsoft?

Unless I'm mistaken, having their end of .Net open will allow them to continue supporting it long after MS decides to leave the scene. And, being a free (as in...?) and open platform, having access to .Net structure, won't they be the reliable source for support? I mean, what idiot would follow the proprietary, expensive route when there's an open, free, supported standard available?

  19. Dealing with Apple... on PowerPC Open Platform Motherboards Finally Here · · Score: 1

Just do what I did... pick a Power Mac out of the trash at your college and fix it up! (still working on this; anyone know where I can find a SCSI HD and CD-ROM, or a Mac monitor for a decent price?)

As far as OS is concerned for these, though, we now have several choices: Linux for PPC, Darwin, MacOS. When can we expect a PPC *BSD port? I'm not sure which of these I'll start out with, but I've seen MacOS7.0.1 for $40. Is that a good deal? Either way, I'm definitely going to burn both Darwin ISO's (x86 and PPC) as soon as I get a 'net connection at home (wherever home ends up being).

One more critical question: All I have is the MB, the case, the floppy drive, and the power supply. I can't seem to find decent enough specs to know what parts to buy for it. Specifically: How much RAM should I have to undertake the project, for any of the above OS's? What's the battery #? Will I need any kind of ROM upgrade?

  20. Re:RMS spouting off (as usual) on RMS: Putting an End to Word Attachments · · Score: 1

    You should read the article...

Honestly, what does RMS expect to accomplish with this editorial?
The people that read it don't send word attachments anyway.

That's the point. It's written to inform people how to *politely* explain to the people who DO send Word attachments that we can't read them.

Going in and telling people to "Stop sending documents in Word!" Is not giving people the 'choice' on what wordprocessor to use.

Again, the article makes it a point to put it nicely. RMS makes a good point that a little (*polite*) effort on the random occasion of dealing with these people will save a lot of time and help to save the ignorant masses as well.

We're not talking about an overnight revolution, people saying "My God, I was assisting Satan by using proprietary, closed-source software!" or what-not. We're just trying to get a little understanding out there, and as a result, make things easier for those who already DO understand.

  21. Re:France is Quasi-Socialist on French Government Online-Why Isn't the U.S.? · · Score: 1

Je comprends, mon ami. My French teacher in HS, as well as my Global Studies teachers, commented a lot on France's view of government, but little of their fear of corporations. I, for one, share that fear. I don't think it's too much to say that we're headed for some kind of a revolution soon ourselves, if things progress the way they have been for the last century. Corporations have no respect for anybody. That's a generalization, but none are generous except when they can afford to be. That is *not* a generalization, but a fact.

One thing you said that intrigued me was this:

But, in the French vision of how things are, a private corporation is made by people who don't give a fuck about other people, wildlife, public health, employment rate, or anything; except the money they earn.

Because earning money is the definition and meaning of life of a private corporation, not ethics, civil rights, or any other things like that.

I've seen plenty of beautiful pictures of France, and as I understand it, it's pretty clean. I've yet to see an image of a plastic bag or a food wrapper floating by a boulangerie. ; )

However, I've never been there; I've never smelled the air, seen the sky, drank from or swam in the rivers. Just out my door is a really messed-up sight. A polluted river, a run-down bar, and not a stretch of road without three or four hubcaps, or tires, or CDRs. Of course, my REAL home is a small town set between two leafy emerald hills, with a horizon softly curved like a naked female body (like I know!). So, my question is this: how have your restrictions against corporations helped to keep your environment clean? And, remember, a picture is worth 128k words, so feel free to put more of those pretty images past my eyes!

People with fewer illogical qualms often donate their bodies to science, which -- IMO -- is equally practical and thoughtful as providing food to the hungry.

Sure, which is great for any of them and I wouldn't have any problem doing it, either (assuming science had a use for my body which wouldn't have sounded disturbing to me while I was alive). What I *should* have said was that if Adams did have a problem with his work being published after his passing on, that should be respected. If you did have a problem with your dead body being eaten, I promise you I would respect that (not that I had any actual plans of doing otherwise, mind you). If you can respect someone's religion and where they believe they've gone to when they've past, then you should be able to respect their wishes about how the marks they've made on this world are to be dealt with. If they had no express wishes, you should still deal with them the way you would deal with their body, in knowing as much as you might have about how they felt about it.

The above poster is right, mod them up. The best part of all these open source tools is that they do exactly what they're meant to (not 100% of the time, but what does?), but more importantly, they generally do little if anything more than they need to. Not to mention they all provide the same services anywhere, so that what one programmer does with his RedHat/GNOME/Emacs station, he can send to his friend with her Debian/KDE/vi desktop, and expect nothing to change in between.
