  1. Perhaps MS can help the world here... on 80% Of Incoming E-mail At Hotmail Is Spam · · Score: 1

If MS would lobby the government for anti-spam laws, maybe things would improve. Spam is costing them money and every reasonably intelligent person hates it. It could be MS's gift to the world.

One idea would be all marketting emails would have to come from a .mkt email address. Make violating the law have a penalty of 10 years in prison and $10K fine per offense (after a warning). While we're at it, require all porn sites to use a .xxx domain. Make it part of the law that ISPs can not block .mkt or .xxx with out the customer REQUESTING it. NO one has a right to make a living in any manner they want, so any spammers that would bitch can go to hell.

Sorry for ranting, preaching to the choir, dreaming of the imposible, etc.

  2. Safe harbor if no other alternative? on MPAA Requests Immunity to Commit Cyber-Crimes · · Score: 1

From the analysis, prepared by Rep. Berman and friends:

"Nor could copyright owners avail themselves of the safe harbor for interdiction efforts on websites, FTP sites, IM services, or IRC channels. The definition is structured so narrowly to ensure that the safe harbor is only available in circumstances in which copyright owners have no effective alternative to technological self-help for addressing infringements."

So does this mean that if it can be shown that the copyright owner could have dealt with the problem in a different way, they'd be liable as if they had no safe harbor?

The US govt will bend over and grease up for the corporations, so whats so surprising about the Italian govt playing alter boy for the church? I can guarantee you that the Catholic church will be here alot longer than the RIAA or M$ or any other corporate entity, after all they are one of the most successful & long lived organizations in (modern & less than modern) history. It's sort of like democrats and republicans arguing who's more corrupt, the answer is d. All of the above.

You'd want more specific books for areas you really wanted to learn, but it'd give you the idea of what is out there.

They could have worked to make windows the best platform to run and develop java on. Instead, they piss a group a people off, we lose out on a language that had nice potential, and make it look like capitalism just makes adults act like kindergardners (ever notice how "smart" adults generally get along IRL, or can at least behave well enough to appear that way?).

There is no dilemma. Anyone who doesn't report something like that deserves to go to jail. If they report it and get fired, throw their bosses in jail for 2x as long. ANYONE who thinks not reporting that kind of stuff is ok is scum.

Nvidia -- faster 3d hardware than ati
Nvidia -- better drivers than ati.

ATi's improving on the driver front and has just about caught up on the hardware front.

Nvidia based cards are improving in the TV tuner/vivo area.

It really all comes back to the parents. Not entirely how they raise the kids, but how they've raised the school system. Any moran can graduate HS, as long as their parents complain. Its only a hop, skip and a jump to where the teachers just pass everyone because they know what would happen if they didn't. Try telling a teacher to fail your child if they don't actually pass. I dare you. Sorry, if parents weren't whiney little punks, teachers might have the balls to do their job. Right now, if they actually do it, they'll get fired.

If this is the case, wouldn't consumers be able to file a class action lawsuit? They should, and it should cost all involved dearly. Possibly, it should even be severe enough that the government should dissallow the use of encryption by the broadcasters.

At the rate this is going, I think people may need to consider government oversight of the mpaa, and to a limited extent, the studios. Although that goes against many capitolistic ideals, these groups seem to embrace every thing bad about capitolism. It sure wouldn't hurt the quality of media -- tv sucks so bad, I'm surprise people aren't embarrased to be in the industry, The stupidity most programs amazing. Very few movies are worth the price of gas to get to a theater, and most musicians are less creative than a person making $10 an hour on an assembly line.

Another option would be to do it the right way -- independant artists selling their wares via the net. Remove the current media houses from the process entirely. This will allow the true artists to not get lost in the shadows of mass marketted corporate garbage we are currently exposed to.

I agree that it's too difficult to get un-listed. The sites should attempt to email someone useful if a server gets listed. And, there should be a single address that admins can email which will request a retest by all of the ordb servers. But, the ordbs are in no way responsible for providing tech support on fixing the problem.

They were more original. Granted it's easier to be original when there's little competition. 21. Component computer... on New External Sound "Card" · · Score: 1

I sit here, after being awake for 5 mins, drinking my coffee, with my stereo 3 feet away from me. It's components: integrated amp, cd, vcr, etc. If I wanted to add a tape deck, I don't have to open a box and install it, I just plug it in.

Why not computers? You could have cpu/mem/vidcard in one and everything that uses lower bandwidth (100MB/s or so?) in separate components in a separate box. The boxes could be standard sizes, say 6 or 7 inches wide. Imagine not having to dig out the screwdriver to add another HD, DVD, different sound card, holographic crystal storage unit, etc.

Now, it'd be nice for us who can change the components now, but think how much easier it'd be for your parents, or the HR person at work who's home computer is 3 yrs old and doesn't want to lose their tax stuff at home when they upgrade.

  22. automated coffee maker on Enter The 'Stupid Patent Tricks' Contest · · Score: 1
The coffee maker uses a computer chip to automate nearly all aspects of making coffee. Water is supplied by a hose, similar to ice makers in refridgerators. Coffee beans are stored in a sealed compartment, and ground immediately prior to the act of making the coffee. The pot can be scheduled from the unit, networked to enable remote commands from computers, connected via infra-red to allow control from hand-held devices, voice controlled, etc. The strength of the coffee made can be controlled, as well as the amount made. Different technologies can be used to control the amount of materials, allowing for different price points depending on level of accuracy. Different levels of connection (network, IR, voice recognition, etc) would also allow for different product price points. Unit would receive electrical power from a common household outlet, although battery powered versions could be released in the future. Multiple bean compartments could allow for different flavors, or mixing during brew. Accessory compartments could hold additives such as sugar and creamer.

    Now, someone build this!!!
