    What gives?

  2. I'm signing up now! on Mobs Move Into Sims Online Power Vacuum · · Score: 4, Funny

With the Mob running things and my Frank Sinatra Sim avatar, I am a shoe-in for becoming a superstar!

  3. Umm....No on Massive Unreal 2K3 Mod Contest Launched · · Score: 1

I think a terrific mod would be a _comprehensive_ editor capabable of generating levels, models, weapons, tweaking engine physics, altering game rules (a la Civ 3), scripting events, creating voicepacks, and so on that required no coding _whatsoever_. This would open the doors to many people who are eager to use tools and make creative contributions, but who don't have the time to develop skills necessary to do so through raw coding.

I really like music. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to learn how to play any instruments. It would be really great if someone could create an instrument that would play itself. That would allow me to create all kinds of great music without having to do anything.

If you really want to get into it, then learn the tools. If you don't have the time to develop the skills, then you don't have time to develop a quality product.

Music and film are great examples of realms of creativity that have been made accessible by computers. Just look at the music and movies being produced by amateurs using home computers these days.

And these people have taken the time to learn the tools of home editing/production. What prevented amateurs from making quality works is the prohibitive cost of production. Computers have made this kind of development accessible not because of processing power, but because of the low cost.

  5. I totally agree on Play Counter-Strike For Real · · Score: 1

The other common cs tactic is shooting at point blank range...which is a BIG paintball no-no. Most fields require that you yell out "surrender!" instead...but years of CS makes for an itchy trigger finger.

Actually, this may be not so far from reality. In paintball games, you are to yell out, "surrender!", but you *may* fire. How do I know this? One game my gun jammed, and I had no choice but to dash in and force people to surrender. After 3 "kills", I snuck up on one person and, at point blank range yelled, "surrender". The girl replied, "No", then shot me! In retrosepct, it was pretty amusing. From this, I learned to yell "surrender", then shoot. :)

  6. Target Audience... ! on Next Nintendo Console In Spring 2005? · · Score: 1

I'll keep it short and simple.

    Consoles are becoming increasingly expensive.
To combat this, companies need to do 2 things:
    1) Lose money on systems to increase market penetration.
    2) Target audiences who have sufficient disposable income.

As we all know, teens have lots of disposable income (look at all those clothes they buy, and how many times they go to the movies!). Sony and MS went after these target groups very aggressively with sports and action titles that would appeal to teens (Madden Football, Halo, etc.).

Nintendo, on the other hand, was not as aggressive. They have, and continue to, stick to their 'old guns' of Mario/Zelda/etc. While this is all well and good, it is not targeting the right group of people.

If Nintendo wishes to survive the next round, they need to shed their current image and develop a new one.

  7. How about something *Somewhat* Different? on Metroid - Zero Mission Previewed · · Score: 1

Enough with the Metroid already, and enough with the remakes of the biggies.

Yaknow, the most enjoyable game I ever played on the Gameboy was good ol' Tetris.

How about bringing some fun puzzle games to the platform like Marble Madness, Bejeweled, Devil Dice, or Intelligence Cube?

  8. NO WAY on Shadowbane Hacking Redux - Guild Bannings · · Score: 1

  9. How They Do it!?! on SquareEnix Confirm Final Fantasy XII, Sales Figures · · Score: 1

I think it would be very interesting how Square manages to pump out these Final Fantasy games so quickly.

Perhaps we should add a new law: Moore's Final Law: Computing power doubles every 18 months, which is about the same time Square releases a Final Fantasy sequel.

Gran Torisimo 3 is also a great game, but doesn't really have any plot (at all). Neither would make a good movie, because FFX would be so butchered to fit in 90 minutes it would be nonseinsical. GT3 would consist entirely of car races with some cheap ass love triangle thrown in by Hollywood.
