Your argument seems to be pitting 24th Century Borg Tech vs. 22nd Century Starfleet Tech. It's 200-ish years earlier for the Borg too. While I think the Borg collective would still kick lots of ass, they will be a lesser threat than their incarnations on previous series/movies.

(Note that I do not watch Enterprise, and have pretty much given up on the franchise.)

  6. Some Groups "Get It" on The Joystick Is The Root of All Evil · · Score: 1

At least not all of the conservative groups are like the one "portrayed" on the fake site.

A few weeks ago I was walking to the grocery store and a man was handing out pamphlets called "Awake!" outside the plaza. I started to shrug away until I realized it was about video games. Expecting it to be illogical and vitriolic, I took one for laugh value (I'm a semi-professional V.G. reviewer). Since the publisher was "Watchtower-something-or-other" I'm guessing it was from the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Anyway, I took a look at it a few days later. Instead of the "GTA is the DEVIL!" trip I had expected, they actually provided benefits of video games in a fair manner as well. The article covered a range of topics and was mostly informative and non-judgemental. Of course, they did spotlight some of the Mature games out there. They also briefly described the ESRB rating system. Far too few parents have any idea that there is a rating system for video games, so it's not a bad thing in my opinion (even if the ratings are spotty sometimes). I feel parents should be involved with their kids and know what they are playing, watching, their interests, etc.

Overall it came across as: "Hey, video games are getting more and more popular, and we're cool with that. Just be aware there are some downsides to keep an eye out for." The last paragraph had some logic flaws, but otherwise it was a well-informed piece. Now I'd be a lot happier if there weren't so many kneejerk and political reactions to video games elsewhere. >_<

  8. Re:Duplication on Project Entropia's Universe Solidifies · · Score: 1

That would depend on how duplication bugs work in this instance. (The closest games to the genre I've played are Ragnarok Online and the Diablo series.) I'd expect a duplication bug to work on a single item at a time and not a full inventory. Even so, a game that let's you hold over a million items in your inventory simultaneously is badly designed in the first place. But as you wrote it, Step 3 would actually be:

    3) Duplicate it 20 times, for 21 items with a price of 420 dollars total.

I AM a long-time trekkie and a fan of the original series and Shatner's character Captain Kirk, but IMHO William Shatner has to be one of the most over-analyzed actors in human history. I mean, what did he REALLY do besides Star Trek and TJ Hooker (and how many people will still remember TJ Hooker in 10 more years if they even remember now)?

I think anyone who is a fan of Iron Chef has had Iron Chef USA seared into their brain. ^_^

  10. Re:They DID!!! on NASA Wasting Time and Money on Moon Landing Doubters · · Score: 1

They tried this one. Chairface Chippendale [tvtome.com] once tried to write his name on the moon, but he only got the first 3 letters before running out of room.

    Regarding the cartoon version:
It's more like the first "e" letters. He carves the 'C' and 'H' in with the laser, and most of the 'A' before he gets stopped. Later on in the second season, the 'C' is removed using explosives. But in the same episode, a character Omnipetus (sp?, parody of Galactus from Marvel Comics) takes a large bite out of the moon.

    In the comics:
I believe a similar storyline occurs with Chairface in the original "The Tick" series that Ben Edlund did. But it occurs in one of the later issues that I haven't read.

The Cartoon Network version of CB only has 23 episodes I'm pretty sure, No Mushroom episode, no Mad Bomber episode, and no Pierre the Crazed French Clown episode.
They may have added these back in since I saw the first run, but in the past they haven't been in the lineup.

During the first airing on CN, they did air only 23 episodes, but the list is different than yours. It was Episodes 6 (the Kid Harmonica Player episode), 8 (starts with "terrorists" on a spaceplane), and 22 (the Mad Bomber episode you mentioned) that got the axe, mostly due to 9-11 concerns. "Sympathy for the Devil" (Episode 6) was for a slightly different reason; it was in the first pairing that would have been shown after the attacks, but probably because of something that happens in the episode. All three episodes aired during the second run through the series.

They haven't had problems with showing the episodes that are more violent ("Pierrot Le Fou", "Black Dog Serenade", anything with Vicious) or less Politically Correct ("Mushroom Samba") at all.

Actually, I think they list the Servbot as "Kobun" in MvC2. It's from the Mega Man Legends (Rockman Dash in Japan) series of games. "Legends" is slightly better than most of the other "let's make a 3-D game out of a 2-D game series" games, but it is an acquired taste.

The Misadventures of Tron Bonne is an awesome game, though, and I'd definitely recommend it.

    Outlaw star's a rip-off of Bebop, so it's either a sibling to O.S., or a rip-off of a rip-off.

Actually, Outlaw Star aired before Cowboy Bebop in Japan. They were both released in 1998, but Bebop came out about 3.5 months after Outlaw Star. Of course, the production lengths would be the important factor if you really wanted to decide which show "rips-off" the other.

But it is not that big a deal. Both shows have their merits.

On the contrary, some people do look like they are dancing and not doing spastic tapdancing. There are two major schools to playing DDR.

The first is Technical (acccuracy). This is trying to be as exact to the foot choreography as possible, beating the most difficult songs and courses, etc. Some people have a decent body flow when doing this, others look like Quasimodo.

The second is Freestyling. This is where people try to look like they are actually dancing. Most create routines for a particular song/difficulty, some will do improvs.

Ah, the good ol' Hillbilly Hercules trick. They made the first movie a sequel for marketing purposes, because that would mean they had to have made enough money on the first to warrant making a sequel. The best part was how they funded it. They made a trailer, and solicited some money (I want to think it was a couple thousand) as "finishing fees" to complete the last bit of the movie. They then used that to actually make the movie itself.

As for Shadowman, yes, I have heard of the original game and remember seeing plenty of magazine ads and stuff for it.

I was reading the news section of Penny Arcade this morning, and they were talking about America's Army. Slashdot's mentioned it a few times recently; FPS released for free by the American military. They're doing something interesting to handle team-killers. If a player breaks "rules of engagement" enough times, then your character "goes to jail" and you can't play on the server for a period of time. Check it out here, it's towards the bottom of the page. Sounds like a cool solution to me.

Seriously, I enjoyed Spider-Man more than Episode II because the former was a better movie as a whole. I thought Spider-Man was a good movie throughout, while Attack of the Clones had a lot of exposition and didn't kick into gear until the last 45 minutes or so.

Still, I wish that insiders would stop making a big deal about money taken in and paid more attention to tickets sold. With ticket prices increasing, we're going to keep getting record-breaking movies every year or two simply from inflation.

  25. Zim Petitions May Have Helped on Slashback: P2P, OS X, Blinkenlights · · Score: 1

Sorry that this is belated, I didn't catch this thread until a friend just mentioned it.

Last weekend, there was a written petition attempt to save Invader Zim at the anime convention Katsucon in Baltimore, MD. It was started by one of the staffers, who had heard that the show was being cancelled (due to labor disputes). Brad formed a website and started said petition. I offered to help when I heard about it a few weeks before the con, and manning the desk during it's initial four hours and popping in throughout the weekend. I haven't heard all the news back from him yet, but there were about 500 signatures total. The nice thing about this is that these were actual, written signatures and not electronic ones, so they would have a little more weight. I know he planned to scan and send the list to several parties in the dispute, but once again, I haven't formally heard the latest news.

If the show is, in fact, no longer cancelled, it is possible that the various petitions may have been partial cause. Or this might be some misinformation, as Nickelodeon has planned to air the remaining new episodes from the get-go. Either way, hope this news has been of use to fans of the show.
