  1. Re:Increase share? on Microsoft Looks To Refuel Talks With Yahoo · · Score: 0, Flamebait

I've already sent a letter to Yahoo support stating if this happens I am closing all of my accounts and switching entirely to Google as my new portal. I created a Hotmail account about 2 months before Microsoft announced they were purchasing it. When I found out I contacted Hotmail and insisted they close my account before the turnover and they said they couldn't do that because they didn't have the ability to delete accounts. I switched to Yahoo because at the time I was changing ISPs pretty regularly and getting tired of sending out change of email address emails. Unlike many of the comments I see here I rarely have any problems with Yahoo. I would hate to lose Yahoo as a viable choice. Remember, even "do no evil" Google without a good alternative choice could start to stagnate without competition.

I'm shocked this is the only comment mentioning the OQO! I had the opportunity to work with the OQO 1+ model for almost a year and while it was not a speed demon by any stretch of the imagination it was more than competent. With the 02's bumped up processor speed and mobile broadband built in I can hardly see any reason to even introduce the flipstart (or should that be falsestart). At $2K I can purchase the fully loaded OQO 02 with Windows Vista (yes there are tutorials on installing Linux)and that includes any shipping costs.

  12. Could this be valid? on Transmeta Sues Intel for Patent Infringement · · Score: 1

All the comments I have read seem to focus on Transmeta being the bad guy when a short history lesson would reveal just how plausible this is. This is from memory so the details may be a little fuzzy but back in the day Compaq had a data bus called the Tri-Flex Architecture. They owned the IP and only used it in their high end server systems. Intel asked if they could have a look-see at the technology so their products would be "compatible" with the bus. Less than a year later several Intel MB designs started showing up with a data bus strikingly similar to the Tri-Flex bus and Compaq sued. Intel is reported to have then informed Compaq they could no longer sell them processors through their OEM channel and Compaq would, hence forth, need to purchase them through retail channels. This would have greatly increased the cost to Compaq for the processors and shortly thereafter Compaq "licensed" the technology to Intel. Transmeta may not be so far off base.

  13. As a long time Yahoo mail user on Yahoo! Mail Beta Goes Public · · Score: 1

I am extremely pleased with the upgrade. They have eliminated almost all of the complaints I have had over the years about the interface. There are still things to be ironed out but I have been using the new interface since they made it available and have never thought about switching back. I have a GMail account but have not really used it since I have had my Yahoo account for years. When the ISP field was awash with independents and switching providers happened regularly I got tired of letting my friends & colleagues know every 3 months what my new email address was so I got the bright idea to get a free Hotmail account. 2 months later Microsoft bought Hotmail and I couldn't switch fast enough. I decided to go with Yahoo because it seemed to be the most stable at the time and that was what I was looking for. It had it quirks but worked and did everything I "needed" it to. After a couple of years I too tired of the ads and decided to take the plunge ($19.95 a year) to get the POP access and the ads removed. So now my friends & colleagues don't get new email address spam every 3 months and I don't have to remember which accounts I have tied to what email addresses. I have noticed the lag between clicks but it doesn't bother me as much as it seems to others. With the Yahoo Plus package I really don't see any difference between Yahoo or GMail except I don't get any ads. As far as the SPAM goes Yahoo correctly tosses about 98% in the bulk folder so I never really have to deal with it. Haven't noticed too many false positives either.

I am suprised there has been no reference to Rome just prior to it's fall. The reason the maturity level is lowering is directly related to the amount of maturity needed to survive. Rome was the mightiest civilization throughout history and it fell not from an outside intruder but from apathy from it's citizens. Rome had become so strong that the majority of it's people did not need to protect themselves for they were protected by Roman Centurions. As they became increasingly restless, and immature, Rome enacted the Bread & Circuses policy to provide food and entertainment to keep it's people engaged.
