It seems every few years the Apple vs. Microsoft lawsuit debate gets refueled. It also seems that the reason the debate rages is that the facts have nothing to do with the debate. These are the facts IIRC:
Apple was working on porting this new cutting edge operating environment, GUI, for the Apple hardware Steve Jobs had seen while visiting Xerox Park.
To speed up development Steve Jobs contracted a little software company called Microsoft to help in development of what became the Macintosh OS.
In said contract was a clause prohibiting MS from creating a GUI for any other platform.
Now this next part I gleaned from the made for TV movie about the subject so it's validity is suspect but as the story goes MS created MS Windows and began selling it in Asia. Since Asia is outside the US market MS didn't feel they were bound by the contract.
Apple found out about the new GUI and the lawsuit ensued. The case was pending for over ten years until a couple of years back they finally settled (read no court ruling) and MS invested a few million into Apple and agreed to keep making Office for the Mac for a few more years.
disclaimer: I didn't say anything you think you just read.
The bybproduct of processing hydrogen through a fuel cell is heat and....WATER...so it would seem you get the water back when you turn the hydrogen into electricy.
yes NT was able to mount HPFS partitions although they hid the driver in the file pinbal.sys Since the early NTFS fs was HPFS with a security layer I wonder if the pinbal.sys file could be used with this wrapper for HPFS access?
Actually, as I understand it most of Coco is Objective C based (ala Nextstep). IIRC when Next abandoned it's hardware business and started focusing on selling Nextstep on other platforms they began developing the next MS Windows killer codenamed RHAPSODY. Rhapsody was Objective C based from the ground up. Apple bought Next so they could make Rhapsody there next generation OS. Once they got it though there were concerns that going foreward it might not be the best choice. Rhapsody got hacked up and the best bits eventually became the frontend for OS X.
There is a solution to ~85% of people today with ADD/ADHD. less sugar/Carbs in your diet. People often overlook the obvious or are unaware of the effect diet has. I know many people who eat what they think is a low sugar diet. What they don't understand is Carbohydrates are just complex sugars. They are used by the body for sustained energy but taken in excess are just like eating raw sugar. So all those baked potatoes, (yes it should be spelled with an E) mac & cheese, rice, & pasta binges are just as much the cause of your sugar rush as that snickers. I am not discounting the ~15% of actual ADD among us just pointing out the flaw MANY Dr.'s make. I have diabetes and ADD and I attribute both to the fact I was a 5 Dew a day addict in high school. I believe it has cost me in lost education since, after getting my AASEE 13 years ago, it is only now that I am going back to school because I found it so hard to study. If you are a parent do your children a favor and balance their diet now!
I have been contemplating this question ever since Houston, Tx went to mandatory 10 digit dialing several years ago. The question of why phones couldn't be set up the way the internet is? using conventional Personal/Business names for dialing and a DNS like server to route the call to the appropriate location. That way it wouldn't matter who your provider is you would always be John.Smith.Home, John.Smith.Mobile, etc. The majority of people using the internet have no idea what an IP address is because DNS works so well but these same people have no problem accepting the fact they must remember their mother/father/sibling/friend/etc.'s voice#/cell#/fax# or that they must look up the number for bob's takeout. If they were on the internet the first thing they would do is type www.bobstakeout.com to see if that worked and ~60% of the time it would. With Telus switching to an IP based system they could easily do something like this (at least for local customers).
If memory serves there was a big stink about NASA (Johnson Space Center Houston) switching their administrative desktops from Macs to Windows just a few years ago. If they kept all of the Mac hardware they could probably ressurect them as Linux terminals.

Considering the lashing SCO has garnered from the initial and subsequent public accusations it seems unlikely they do not know what they are doing. What is more likely is they have a deal in place already to do what they are doing. Why else would they go to such elaborate means to get this publicity? This is EXACTLY what a particular major ISV "needs" in it's campaign against OSS. Does anyone remeber a few years ago about a certain software company leaving glowing reviews about itself on the internet posing as average users? This is definately a BAD thing and will be used by marketing to sell Linux/OSS FUD for years to come.
Well if you think about it....Her name is "TRINITY" as in the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, & Holy Ghost) so maybe it's not so far fetched to make the comparrison. It's not like it's anything new. Star Wars is supposed to be heavily influenced by Lucas' religious beliefs.
Or are there some EXTREMELY angry/anti-Lindows posters today? I understand the underlying issue about why it is unwise (Insane) to make the default account root but I completely understand why he says he does it that way. If you really stop and think about it how many people (non technical) do you know who would ditch Lindows in a heartbeat if they couldn't do something they currently can do in Windows. They EXPECT things to work like windows. Just like they EXPECT to have anti-virus software. A few years ago, when the Melissa virus stormed the net, I worked in a Novel/Lotus Notes environment. We got phone calles ALL DAY LONG for several weeks from people saying they were infected with Melissa. I had to explain to them that since Melissa only affected MS Outlook they couldn't be infected but were simply receiving emails from people who were infected. Many of them still insisted I come look at their systems. That is why Lindows works the way it does. No geek in their right mind is going to be enticed by this distro because it was NEVER EVER EVER targeted at you. Stop whining that it perverts Linux/OSS and help them succeed where every other attempt has failed. Is it so wrong to expect payment for services rendered?
The difference is, if you try and run apt-get you can and are encouraged to do so. If you try and run any app/game/OS on the XBox that isn't MS tested and mother gates approved you will get a C&D letter from Microsoft if not thrown in jail for violating the DMCA.
You can bet your arse someone now has the idea and is hacking away at this very moment writing this very virus not to unleash on the world but as a defense should he ever get caught. There is now case law to back it up. I wouldn't be suprised to see this defense proliferate copyright cases in the very near future.
is why we do not see more of this. We have so many devices that completely waste energy. The combustion engine is one of the greatest wasters of energy but it's only recently someone came up with regenerative breaking err braking. The way I see it energy is never actually spent. Energy simply is changed from one form to another as it is used. The reason your CPU gets so hot is because wasted electrical energy is released as heat energy. If they could come up with a more efficient way to transfer heat energy to electrical energy other than a steam turbine then we would have an almost unlimited resource in the suns radiation. Thus far somewhat efficient solar cells are still dissapointing. As far as turning vibrations into energy, it just seems lie a no brainer to me...but I would like to see how they implemented it.
As with any "TOOL" there is the potential for abuse. What the RIAA MPAA want is to take away all the tools to remove that ptotential. If they win then next we will lose the right to bear arms (because somebody might use one to shoot somebody "illegally") and then the right to bear pencils because those can take an eye out. What we need in the USA is to take responsibilty for our own actions and stop being so damn greedy. The companies that comprise the RIAA, MPAA make plenty of money....they just don't like it that Co. B is making more. Until rampant greed is quelled this type of human rights violation will continue.
I have been waiting for GE to make good on their HomeGen for several years but the web page hasn't changed in years. The HomeGen was even announced here on Sept. 17 2000. I believe even the Colaman product has been posted here before. I have been ready to fork over wads of cash for this technology for over 5 years but all I keep hearing is "Just a few months". I may just have to get some coconuts and make batteries like the professor on Giligan's Island.
This brings up a question often posed about software "licensing"? If I have paid for the software/hardware/firmware/jelloware... isn't it now up to me what I do with it? As long as I am not using it on multiple machines simultaneously why should I be prohibited from using it on the hardware/emulator of my choice? From Apple's POV it's about selling hardware. You have 3 choices, avoid non-Apple hardware, use non-Apple hardware knowing you are violating the EULA, or challenge the EULA in court.
actually, if you want a good portable home theatre check out the BenQ portable DVD/SVCD/VCD/MP3/Kitchensink player for $150 (US). BTW has anyone used one of these? I am itching to get one but don't know too much about BenQ or mp3playerstore.com.
Beyond the moral implications of such a hybrid there is the very real question of what happens if in the process a hybrid strain of super bacteria/virii are created? I understand the excitement and the potential here. I just hope they are taking the necassary precautions.
Actually I was in Fry's (Houston) this weekend and I noticed the system in question. There was a saleperson helping a couple with the unit. The system was $299. The couple (they had a little boy just big enough to reach up and touch the keyboard.) were looking and the man asked if they would have to install all of their old software themselves. The salesman replied it was running a different OS and it wouldn't run their old programs. Then the guy said he didn't care what OS it came with because he was gonna install his old OS when he get's it home. I'm not sure that's what we want but at least to Fry's it looks like a buy for Linux.
I think I'm gonna wait for the SGCA. It will probably have A DVD/CD/MP3/OGG/WMA/etc. player plus built in PS2/XBox firmware emulation so you can play all of your titles. The graphics will be handled by Matrox's new G1000 series GPU and the unit will also double as a maid/butler when you're not searching for Rupes and fighting Gandolf.
But unlike the IE-NS analogy where giving a binary application away for free doesn't increase per copy cost. The XBox is a tangible product that costs $$ to produce. Once IE reached a certain code base the cost drops Significantly to sustain. Giving away code is as easy as the copy command. Giving away an XBox is not. Even Microsoft with their Billions cannot afford the kind of drain giving away hardware would entail. Unless of course they start charging for IE.
Now why the hell do I want to reinstall every couple of weeks or so.
/. We know you reinstall your OS every 2 days to get the latest kernel/driver/optimization.
