I have a friend that works for the Department of Defense and though he wanted an iPod however, employees aren't allowed to bring in any device that data could be written to, so he couldn't use it at the main place he'd wanted to.
I had the case panel off and was hearing noise from one of the fans. Since I couldn't tell which one it was coming from I reached my hand in where I couldn't see to try and stop one of the fans so I could see if that was one of the ones making the noise. Of course I didn't get my finger onto the hub of the fan; I stuck my finger in it and broke off a fanblade. Now the thing was off balance and buzzing horribly. So I quickly shut down the machine and break off one on the opposing side so it would be balanced, if a little less effecient.
Turn it back on, buzzing a little now, but tolerable and I reach in again to check the other fan and this time I didn't even get the right fan, I hit the first one again and broke off another of its blades, rendering it useless so I had to replace it with an 80mm wired onto the heatsink with twist ties. I later did the same thing with the other CPU fan. Now both are proudly sporting quieter 80mm fans attached by twist ties. So far I've managed to keep my fingers out of those. And even if I didn't I think the much larger blades would survive.
It's not a reasonable solution if it doesn't work, ie microsoft.
Capitalism inherently creates monopolies

Capitalism is essentially survival of the fittest for buisnesses. Sooner or later the best one will come out on top in any market and then they'll have a monopoly if they so desire it. And I don't mean best in terms of their product(s) or service(s), I mean the best (most ruthless?) at running a buisness. Beating your competition either by being better or just eliminating them is what survival of the fitest is all about. If you don't want monopolies, don't use capitalism.
It's what I use, combined with (4) 18GB Atlas 10k III's (The drives have a seven year warranty) in a RAID 0 array. It costs 3 times as much as most motherboards and better than most motherboards.
I'm not using RAID 5 (though the 2100s supports it) because I need the space. I just run Rapidbackup to back up select data to my old IDE drive. My system is now 3 years old and it still performs fine in all but the newest games, I can run 5-6 copies of Diablo II Expansion simultaneously with almost no noticible slow down.
Last I checked the 2100s was the cheapest hardware raid system out there and it's probably worth it.
I only wish I could afford 36GB drives instead of my 18's, if I could I would use RAID 5.
Though the technology may not be ready for a lot of real world applications (though I would love to have it in my car) I think it's ready to be in the movies!
Hell, after people read this comment we probably will see this in movies. Now the trick is to get them not to abuse it and just sort of sneak a shot or two of it being used in there so we'll be like, "Wow! That was fucking cool!" instead of trying to make a whole movie about it.
The way music/entertainment started out was just muscians, bards, players (as in actors/bards/performers) of troups would go around to various villages, castles, towns & whatnot and they if you wanted to see the show you paid them. Don't pay, don't get to see. You couldn't take the performance home with you even if you could hire performers even permanently, you still couldn't keep the preformance at your fingertips. There was no MPAA, no RIAA. In fact there was rarely a middleman at all. 100% of nearly all payments went to the artists directly. No one could copy the stuff or trade it with neighbors. Therefore there was no need for DRM and fair use wasn't an issue because there wasn't anything to "use".
Selling stored recordings of performances brought about the recording industries, and copyrights and then the ability to share things and that brought about the desire for DRM by the AAs.
If you follow the course of events back to their beginnings its the recording companies themselves that started the whole mess, they're the problem.
If you don't record it, we can't copy it.
It's essentially a flawed buisness model that they're trying to hold up on two crutches; one called DRM, the other with lawyers. The bottom line is that they cannot prevent illegal copying of their copyrighted material. If you don't like it, get out of the buisness.
Selling media that contains recorded performances is a flawed buisness model that cannot in this day and age be 100% sound. The very act of recording ruins it all.
The thundering noise you hear... ...is ten million sysadmins and deskside support people all saying "NO SHIT, SHERLOCK!" in unison.
So true and so funny. However, if it had been something more sensational and catchy, like "Spyware is Taking Over the World" you - or someone like you - would have complained that it was sensational.
Lets face it, most headlines one of the following:
And that's an important aspect as well. I suppose what I was getting at was that people use iPods and Walkmans to escape from social interaction with most people they know. For example, I don't allow my children to listen to their Walkmans while they are in the car because that time can be better spent getting connected with one another.
People like you are the reason nearly everyone has has stories of fighting with their siblings. "Familiarity breeds contempt." dunno who said it, but your kids have been around each other for as long as the youngest in the relationship has been alive, and if they have to share a room then they'll probably be at each others' throats after the relationship is 5 years old. Headphones could be a break from each other. Sure, they'll grow out of it after one/all but one moves out, but until then you're just itching for your eardrums to be hammered with "Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" ad infinium.
After drinking a bit of Sam Adam's, Bud* will taste like mostly water. Stop drinking that (~5% alcohol) tripe and get some real beer (~8%).
And don't say "but it's cheaper! I just want to get wasted, I don't care how it tastes!" because the reason it's cheaper is that it's MOSTLY WATER. You'll get more drunk and enjoy it more from STRONGER, BETTER TASTING beer.
This is the kinda thing Genetic Engineering and Modification should be going into, not for Cheaper prices in the supermarket, or Glowing fish,

Of course, thats whats been said about just about any new or improved technology in the last what, 30 years?
No let's not see more food. Let's see more contraceptives. The problem isn't that there isn't enough food, it's that there are too many people for the land to supply. Sending food on temporarily solves the symptom of the problem. The problem being overpopulation. It sounds harsh, but in the end fewer people would starve fewer children especially.
Unfortunately I can't take credit for this idea, I read it in Ishmael.

I work at my college servicing the IBM ThinkPads that the school leases. (There's your background
The manufacturer should have replacement parts as long as the thing is under warranty and possibly a while after.
I've probably replaced about 4,000 LCD bezels by now and I know exactly what you mean.
The place that was trying to replace the ENTIRE assembly on you was doing nothing more than trying to rip you off BIG TIME. LCDs can cost more than the laptop their in, and that piece of plastic probably costs $.50 to make. (Even though IBM charges ~$50 for one)
I recommend just trying harder to contact the original manufacturer.
Back when I had dialup via a local ISP called Wirefire they would automatically disconnect any dial-up user who had been connected for 4 consecutive hours no matter how active the connection, or what you were doing at the time, every 4 hours I got to hear a little *click* from my modem telling me I'd just been kicked off again.
I can remember the nightmare days of having to check the time on my connection before playing any games to be sure I wasn't getting near the 4 hour limit before getting into any in-depth gaming. It was not fun. If I was approaching 4 hours I'd have to disconnect/reconnect before I could be assured a contiguous game.
I live/attend school at a college with this very problem. Here's how we handle it:
Shut off the ports in the infected individuals dorm ROOM (yes, we can do that).
Wait for that person to whine (call or come in to the helpdesk) that their internet connection doesn't work.
Make them run the patches that an email was sent out about back in Mid-August (Before school started).
Even if it's the hapless uninfected roommate that calls, through him we can get his idiot roommate's computer cleaned and both of them back online in no time. (I mean if the idiot's machine is still infected at this point he's not very responsible anyway, so the roommate may be the only way to get it taken care of)
We can even give them all to the person on a cd.
Anybody who says:
ISP Guy: Your coputers Infected, get a patch.
Customer: I can't download the patch, you've turned off my internet access
has obviously not had to deal with this, or is not very smart. I mean that is a "duh"-level problem.
I have a friend that works for the Department of Defense and though he wanted an iPod however, employees aren't allowed to bring in any device that data could be written to, so he couldn't use it at the main place he'd wanted to.

No, TiVo, you are *not* entitled to a monopoly, the dominate market share, or even any of it.

Ahem. Some americans HATE the english system of measurement and wish it would stop being used here.
As for your comment about spacecraft failure, there's a book called The Cassini Division, that says it quite eloquently, "fucking nasa" I believe...
