    That's not a double negative. If they had said they are more secure then they would be saying Proprietary > OSS. They said they are not less secure so in fact they are saying Proprietary >= OSS.

    Of course, good looking people get laid more than the ugly ones, but that's exactly the reason I'd expect them to be less willing to spoil their fun with having kids/wives/husbands.

    Because on average the traditionally "attractive"* girls act like stupid bimbos and get knocked up.

    * My idea of "attractive" and societies idea of the same don't exactly line up.

    This made me nearly shit my pants when I read ".NET Server is being scrapped" in the story. I am in the final stages of a book on .NET Server Security (okay, have a good laugh) and if they had cancelled .NET Server I would have been screwed.

    My five year old Fujitsu 4.5GB SCSI-2 HD is still going strong.

    I'm skeptical how long the 40GB drive in my laptop is going to last though, especially with the abuse it takes.

    That's a pretty broad generalization to make. You may not need a lot of computing power for a 10 user file server (and anyone who says you do is a total moron) but there are applications for which you do need a lot of power.

    Nobody needs to legitimately access those files to update their DNS servers. Everything will continue to work fine even if nobody could access those files. Even if you NEEDED to update your root hints file (which you don't), you can always lookup the NS records on another root server and output it to your hints file.

    Nice troll though, it went totally unnoticed until now.

    It's most likely pirated MS software. They don't have the same kind of copyright laws in the third world and even if they did, they're often not enforced.

    The company I work for produces Methanol. In one of the boardrooms is a little acryllic car shaped object and inside is a tiny methanol powered fuel cell and a little supply of methanol. You flip the switch and a little electric motor starts turning a little wheel.

    Sure, it's kind of stupid, but it's neat to be able to play with a real fuel cell.

    As a side, and this is /., I see more and more IT shops moving to linux. If Linux gets some half decent Open Source vertical applications then companies will flock to it. Why pay $2,500,000 for an ERP package that you have to tailor?

    There is NEVER going to be a piece of open source software that can compete with SAP, BAAN, JD Edwards, or Peoplesoft. No matter what, it will NEVER happen. These products are too extensive to be created in the open source world.

    This means I'm still paying $2.5m for a piece of software that I can run on Linux or Solaris (let's assume they all get ported to Linux). So I can run them on Linux on Intel hardware or Solaris on Sun hardware. Which choice do you think the technical architects and executives are going to make? What Linux system is going to compete with a Sun 6800 for these software packages?

    Open source is NOT ALWAYS the answer.

    Because I like Outlook and Eudora, Opera, Mozilla, and Netscape all suck in comparison. I've been using it since outlook 97 came out, and I've never had a virus. I know why too. It's because I'm not an idiot. Most Outlook viruses are user propagated anyways.

    I have used a CAD/CAM package called Applicon Bravo (now owned by unilogic) for many years that used mouse and tablet gestures since it ran on a VAX 11/780, through newer VAX and now PC systems. It uses the middle mouse button to indicate that you are "gesturing" and you can make multi-level menu selections with gestures.

    Is a phone that lets me phone people and lets people phone me. I don't want to surf the web, I don't want to take pictures, and I don't want to play games. I just want to phone people. Because it's a phone. That's what you do with it.

    I guess that's why I have the most basic digital phone you could get two years ago, an LG 330. It lets you make and receive calls and store numbers, and that's it.

    XP Home starts on my new laptop within ten seconds. As an ex-Windows 2000 Pro user, I couldn't believe it when I swiched it on and looked back at it and it was sitting at the desktop already.

Are they trying to make us feel bad for these people who get paid truckloads of money and have no talent? Maybe they should show me a non-RIAA artist who lives out of their car and plays dumpy clubs instead.
