I loved Clarke's short stories and through them I found Asimov and Heinlein. The trio's tales wound around my head so tight that I sometimes have a hard time to cite their works individually as, seemingly, I fused them all into a MechaScifi monster.
RIP Mr. Clarke.
If Gary Gygax allowed me to be a nerd, you gave my dreams wings.
D&D helped me through my timid teens, made me friends, made me love reading (introduced me to Tolkien) and led me to Rogue, Hack and Nethack - which, in a way, helped me fall in love with computers.
I'll be sure to break out my old, old, old D&D books and read them over for old time's sake.
I loved the movie and I loved the nods and goodies they gave the fans such as Seymour.
My favorite part was during the opening graphics - the "old" cartoon showing before the Planet Express ship crashes into the billboard. I had to stop the movie and jerk back a few tears, it was the most intense feeling of nostalgia I've felt in a very long time.
I never posted this request before since I thought that the crew was split apart but since you're all in Ann Arbor, bring back Geeks in Space!
I used to have a ball at listening to CowboyNeal, Hemos and CmdrTaco chatting about what was happening online and whatever else happened to come up. I still remember CmdrTaco bitching about how lossy MP3 compression was and since then I've used his cymbal noise as an example of why FLAC is better.
Call it a podcast, I don't care! Since the quickies are dead (and I miss them too), I wanna hear what you guys think about the latest South Park episode, how your female WoW characters are doing and other nerdy, nerdy, silly stuff.
Anyway, throw us an audio bone and bring back Geeks in Space, please!
I know a few audiophiles, I know a lot of Windows evangelists, I know open source evangelists and I know quite a few evangelical Christians and all of them sound the exact same to me.
It all comes down to faith and the feeling that "I'm better than you."
I was looking for security related sites and forums and came upon Slashdot after a while. After reading a few articles and admiring the place I was hooked.
The years flew past and I got caught up in one of the infamous mass-bannings from a while back. I'm pretty sure that it's all in the past but I still can't get any mod points in this account, which is a shame.
I watched a few of the leaked shows that they reviewed (don't you love the Internets?) so I'll comment on them.
Chuck: Fun like Burn Notice and Psych but not very nerdy. It's got the nerd culture in it, the socially inept folks and close friendships get good grades from me. However, some parts are very poorly executed: magical images that contain steganography that the brain decodes, an HD explodes from a 4' drop inside the case and a few others that fell flat to me. Oh, it's got Jayne so that's a plus.
Big Bang Theory: Imagine, as someone one EZTV said, Revenge of the Nerds written by mindless jocks. It's crap, crap, crap, so much crap that I was insulted by it.
Journeyman: I thought it was an interesting story, maybe we've seen it before (Quantum Leap) but we haven't as he's not leaping into other people nor is he shifting into the distant past so I think it'll have mainstream appeal (for a few episodes at least). Disclaimer though, I like Kevin McKidd, for a guy in his early 30's he had a lot of heart in his Vorenus character.
The IT Crowd (UK): I watch the show and I have a lot of laughs with it but I'm a sucker for UK comedies. As for geek culture, I have to say it's not perfect but it comes close. In case you've never watched it, the references are the stickers in the office, Roy's t-shirts and Moss' and Roy's personalities (they're socially challenged). I guess that it does come close as, being a practicing nerd, I'm not always talking about gadgets and geeky sites nor am I obsessed with computers and science so I guess it's more organic.
Yeah, I suck for reading 700+ pages of crappy photographs but considering that I'm on vacation and had a lot of time to spare, I went ahead and read it.
I do confess that I have no intention of spoiling the story (I won't even say if I liked it or not) unless some anti-spoiler crybaby starts screaming, after I mention, in casual conversation, that I read the book, that I should respect their inability to read a f*cking book until the movie comes out in 2009 (maybe).

In truth, those retards are born again christians. You're not the only one that hates that kind of stuff. We're a catholic nation but those f*ck*n' extremist christians ruin everything for everyone else.
I was one of the people almost waiting in line to buy it but, IIRC, the game was much to big and things just didn't fit together the way they were supposed to so Matt Wright did the right thing and didn't release another game fiasco (`a la Daikatana).
And this is intresting too - "Rambus founder's Matrix unveils first 3D memory chip" (The Register), intresting stuff, it kinda reminds me of Orson Scott Card's multidimensional memory in "Children of the Mind".
Don't forget that we - 'zilians - are a society based on paper. I work for a bunch of burocreaps and despite my futile attempts at introducing them to the wonders of sending memos to other sectors via email or our intranet BBS those f*cks preffer to print the stuff out and hand them out.
This law won't work - it may have passed but it'll be ignored as most of our other laws are by TPTB. That's my prediction.
Geekess any day. Narrowing the field down to the two of them I'd pick Ms. Geek even if she was less attractive though I can't see how a girl that knows perl could be anything next to sexy.:)
Please tell me the difference between a crypto system with a backdoor and having no system at all - especially when it could be easily reverse engineered by any clever cryptoanalyst. Adding a backdoor to cyrptography now a days is just like putting clear celophane on your window to not let anyone look in!
It seems to me that trusting the US government isn't easy for anybody - even for you americans - so wouldn't it be better to just prohibit any sort of information privacy?
2) Cat Stevens "Peace Train" & "Morning Has Broken". Cat Stevens?!? Since when were his songs inappropriate?
Cat Stevens is now muslim and has always been revolutionary. Maybe that's what motivated this, ClearChannel might believe his songs may contain subliminal messages that might corrupt the USA's youth, this might be the same type of thinking that added "Walk Like and Egyptian" to the list.
I've been using Mozilla's daily builds as my standard browser since M18 and as my email client since 0.8 and I've got to say that I love it - yes, it is a memory hog but I have more than enough memory to give a fsck.
I've been trying to evangelize the users from my work place into using Mozilla since 0.9.2 and so far I've managed to get 10 out of 90 to switch (from Netscape 4.75 of course, IE is a no-no acording to company security policy).
Way to go Mozilla Team - it gets better every single day, congratulations!
Hey guys, how about allowing us to disable stories from Idle - if not disable, how about allowing us to show up on the main page minimized.
This.

Thank you...
Better words have yet to be spoken.
Thank you so, so, so much.

Kari's hot.
I don't care how badly her hair is cut nor how fugly red she has it, she's still hot.
I know this isn't Fark, but it has to be said.
One man's misery is another's chance to quote Nelson from The Simpsons so I'll just get this out of the way...
Ha! Ha!
I don't know EVE's demographics but repairing this by hand is beyond most users abilities.

I've noticed that Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert have great power over Washington and the current administration.
Most big moves in DC happen when the shows are on a break. Either the administration fears the two jesters or this is a wacky coincidence.
Another event I can remember is "Scooter" Libby's commuted sentence.
I chose fire-crotch over tentacle asian chicks anytime.
Not to mention that the actress that plays Ginny is kinda c&!@#!@#(NO CARRIER

You're guilty until you buy an expensive lawyer to prove your innocence.

We're heading towards a massive parallel global computing system controlled by no single entity
Unless, maybe, it's controlled by MS... Take a look at these two articles on The Register:
- MS poised to switch Windows file systems with Blackcomb
- How Microsoft's file system caper could wrongfoot the DoJ
