  1. Uhhhhhh on Apache 2.0 vs. IIS · · Score: 4, Redundant
"Microsoft's only downside exposure would be the potential demise of IIS, which has no financial impact because the Web server is bundled as part of the OS. And, here, Microsoft has seemingly acknowledged defeat: IIS is not available on the Home edition of XP and the Professional edition, by default, is installed without IIS.

Officials from Microsoft declined to comment on this article."

What a crock of crap. As an IIS Admin I will not sit here and act like IIS is perfect (it is a royal pain in the arse actually), but this is just clueless reporting(?). IIS has NEVER been installed by default in ANY version of NT or 2000 Workstation, Professional, etc. I know that it wasn't installed by default in NT4 Server as well. I honestly can't remember with 2000 Server. Such drivel like this really throws lots of salt in the article. If I were Microsoft, I wouldn't give this writer any air of legitimacy by responding either.

Actually Carroll and the boys do respond to the oxymoronically referred to MS Security articles. They always spit the company line about how all sofware has vulnerabilities and that (insert ABM company here)'s software isn't perfect either. It's a legitimate point maybe the first 10 or 15 times you read it, but after constantly seeing it and rarely seeing a vulnerability in (insert ABM company's name here)'s software, you start to take them with a grain of salt (as you should with any comment on a public web forum).

Not that everyones software is bug free, but MS's software obviously has more high profile vulnerabilities exposed. The reasons behind this are debatable... but it's the fact of the matter.

My understanding is that this is a fire safety issue, this type of wire does not emit toxic fumes when it burns. I know that it is required for commercial installs, maybe home installs are different. Whatever the case, it will probably cost a LOT more than $60 / 1000 feet.

I don't know about the Genesis having better hardware. It had a faster CPU. 12 MHz against 3.58 MHz on the SNES, but the graphics and sound processors on the SNES blew the Genesis out of the water.

I'll never forget the SEGA commercial that was talking about Genesis and it's "Blast Processing". They showed Sonic and compared it to Mario Kart in an ill-advised move that was intended to illustrate the disparity in processing speeds. Unfortunately, I saw this commercial as a freshman in High School and was STILL playing Mario Kart for hours in my college dorm while Sonic's *third* incarnation was collecting dust on the back shelf.

I don't think that it is good UI design either. Too easy for a user to accidently close a tab. Having it off to the side puts a minimal effort into closing the window. Which I personally think is a good decision.

  8. Re:Cross-platform performance. on Mozilla 0.9.6 Released · · Score: 1

The Mozilla core is actually quite fast. The slowness of the application is frequently blamed on the fact that Mozilla renders its own interface as opposed to letting the Operating System handle this.

Browsers like Galeon and Kmeleon are faster because they give this function back to the OS. As a result though, their respective looks are confined to one platform.

There are definitely advantages to both implementations, and the fact that these "children" of Mozilla are available independently on Windows and Linux says a lot about the flexibility of the gecko core (a good selling point).

I think the point is that NYC and China have relative time intervals. One hour in NYC is one hour in China. When you are dealing with interstellar entities, the whole concept of time changes since (assuming that everyone acts as we do) time is measured by the positioning and behavior of celestial bodies (orbit, rotation, distance from light source, etc.). What the hell does 5 Earth years equal in K-Paxian time?

For Prot to say that he is leaving in precisely 5 Earth years and then insinuate that this is because of conditions on K-Pax is a little unbelievable because the time reference from which his measurement is made has little bearing on the place that he is going.

Of course we know that the real answer to this is that the whole "5 year" thing gives our hero reason to travel across the country and deliver a bit of important exposition.

Lots of good Astronomy in this one.

According to our friends in the RIAA, people at CD Mastering plants need to carefully listen to every recording sent to be pressed in order to prevent mass producing an RIAA recording ("Ignorance is no excuse" they say). So I guess companies like Disc Makers are supposed to hire somebody who is familliar with every single RIAA-produced recording and listen to every order that comes through to make sure that they are in fact original recordings.
