I like to compare TiVo to the Apple Macintosh. Both are closed systems with a very large user dev/hack community. The fact that they have an underlying open source base doesn't change anything.

Yes there are devices to transfer to a PC. It just doesn't solve every file backup problem.

Offtopic, The Xbox manual also talks about MS not being responsible for virus attacks. Does this mean that they will release a virus scanner? Probably not. Once someone writes virii that exploit some hole in networked Xboxes, there will be problems.

  10. I have a GOOD use for this on Linux Running on Xbox Without Modchip! · · Score: 5, Insightful

People are asking "Why Xbox Linux?" and others are responding with "Why not?", well I have a legitimate reason for wanting Linux on an unmodded Xbox.

My Xbox is going back to MS as they have attempted to fix a problem several times and have so far been unsuccessful. This time, they're considering swapping systems for a new one, which I'm fine with except for one thing: Loss of saved games.

They will not just swap drives as it would save them at least 5 minutes of work, so I will lose all of my info on the HD.

With Linux running on my unmodded Xbox, I could possibly FTP the data elsewhere and restore it on the new system. This makes so much sense to me that I wonder why there is no way of doing it by default.

Microsoft's idea is to purchase their Memory Units and backup this way. Problem is, since each Xbox comes with a hard drive, no developer tries to make the smallest possible size save file. I would need several MUs to backup my data. Plus, some files cannot even be copied to a MU which means they cannot be backed up at all.

Some form of backup should exist to relieve this problem. I think that this could be it.

First off, Mexico has not signed this into law yet, but since everyone is concerned wther the US would follow suit let me point out something.

This proposed law grants the government the ability to charge for public domain works. This would not be in the best interest of the **AA which routinely uses PD works as they like.

The government would also have an interest in letting copyrighted works expire into the public domain so they could make their money, hence no more copyright extensions. The **AA certainly wouldn't like that.

This wouldn't be the first time that the Mac has changed processors. (680x0 -> PPC) It's unlikely that Apple would keep the crappy PC style architechture though. Take a look at the base 1 MB and the terrible interrupt controller cascade. Apple wouldn't want to inherit this, plus if they stay far enough outside the PC, they can maintain their individuality.

I can picture geeks buying x86Mac hardware to run Linux on as it should be more stable than current x86 hardware. I can also picture x86 virtualization software (VirtualPC) being useful. Apple no longer has to deal with the low clock speed stigma.

This sounds like it would be a good thing.

Consider this: most linux users have a static IP but a large fraction of MS users will have a dynamic IP. So if they are counting unique IPs it will have a heavy windows bias.

Making a broad generalization, then using this "fact" to support an incorrect statement is just wrong.

First: Of the GNU/Linux using folks that I know, every one of them has a dynamicly assigned IP. OTOH every static IP address that I know of/deal with points to a Windows box. This is my personal experience and doesn't disprove your statement but I would like to see where you get your numbers from.

Second: Going by your statement, If they counted unique IP addresses, the single GNU/Linux system would count as much as the 300+ Windows 98 users connecting to AOL. This would give a huge bias against Windows. This is what is wrong with your statement

The story is about developers switching to GNU/Linux, not users. Google Zeitgeist counts all users that search with Google. This stat is thus meaningless in this argument.

Development shifts to GNU/Linux means more applications, more applications means more users.

If the story is correct then there will be a higher percentage of GNU/Linux users in the future. Problem is that I don't believe their statistics either.
