  1. Egads man, this is terrible! on Blizzard Sues Creator of WoW Bot · · Score: 1

If a game forces you to spend hours doing tasks a bot CAN do, then it's crap.

This is the worst comment about games I have seen in a while. It's bad because on the surface it looks perfectly agreeable. In actuality it is quite insidious.

No game forces you to spend hours doing anything. You're always free to go do something else. Also a bot can be written to play Tetris or solve Sudoku puzzles or even play chess. I don't think that these games are crap and there are plenty of other people who would likely agree with me.

I have played WoW and found it to be enjoyable, but I liked the progression grind from 1-60 and not the general sameness tedium that ensued once max level was reached. Blizzard now wants everyone to focus on endgame and damn the rest. For me, 60 (and later 70) was a journey and not a destination. Now it seems that the less time your character spends on Azeroth actually learning how to play while enjoying the sights, the better.

Ah well. I don't play anymore and I figure that I'm better off for it. I enjoyed getting together with a few friends and questing or even doing an instance, but now that we've all been fervently pushed forward, I am not going to resign myself to the second job of raiding just so I can have equipment that is marginally better than what I have now.

  2. I must not be a fan then on The Wrath of the Apple Tribe · · Score: 5, Insightful

I use Apple products all of the time; the only personal computers that I ever have powered on anymore are all Macs. My "promoting" of Macs to friends and family has been more beneficial in convincing some of them to buy Apple products more than any clever advertising. I've even brought Apple into my workplace and who knows, it may even make a decent foothold in the formerly all MS shop. I would consider myself a fan.

But I will point out the negatives in their products where I see them. There is no point in pretending that they don't exist as all that does is give them time to fester. I am a realist. I'll also point out issues with the company when they deserve it. Yeah, praise is better but only if they are going to work for it.

I am more judgmental because I've been in the IT field for years and have used, and I mean really used, many different OSes out there. I also wouldn't have considered calling myself a Mac user before OS X. Sorry fans, but OS 9 was pretty terrible.

I suppose Apple needs the rabid fanbase as they are advertisers that pay the company for the privilege. Maybe Apple should even thank them every now and then for keeping the company afloat for so many years. They also need the realists that speak their mind and truthfully say what is good, what is bad, and what is downright idiotic. Yes, this means that these groups will clash but it is needed.

How else are they going to move forward?

This way I can play the game anytime I like and not have to worry about carrying my original CDs with me. I'm happy for this news because it will allow me to delete these as well as the Starcraft .dmg files. A few GB on a laptop is a big deal.

It's taken far too long for the gaming companies to figure this out. Ten years ago games would have no-cd patches out the same day that new copy protection came out. The really invasive ones took maybe a month or two but the crackers could play them. The only people who suffered were the legitimate buyers. Blizzard really should have learned this lesson back in 2000 when Diablo II was causing issues with legitimate disks but pirated copies worked fine.

I was showing a younger friend Phantasy Star and he commented that the Genesis was a pretty nice machine for its time. He was amazed when I told him that it was on the SMS and not the Genesis; that he was seeing what Sega was putting up against the NES.

That game has a lot going for it. Interesting storyline, 3D dungeons, vehicles, all party members showing up on the map. Probably the only thing that Phantasy Star was missing was 3D glasses support. Now that would've been cool.

The NES won that generation by courting third party support and then making it exclusive (Ultima IV?) and the console manufacturers have been doing this ever since. The SMS was clearly a better piece of hardware though but hardware alone isn't enough to move units. Actually I can't think of a single generation where the technically superior console came out on top.

Completely off topic: PS2's Nei died 6 years before FF7's Aeris. Deal with it.

If you would like to give it a go, install the Developer Tools and run Quartz Debug (/Developer/Applications/Graphics Tools). Under the Tools menu, you must "Enable QuartzGL" and "Show User Interface Resolution". You can adjust the slider or key in a number to multiply the interface size by. Enjoy. You have to restart apps to get it to take effect.

As for my beef with Apple? Let's see...

    1. Lack of PPC support. I understand exactly why, I just don't like it.
    2. Many issues with Tiger were never fixed, basically forcing a Leopard upgrade. (networking being a major one)
    3. Leopard still has major flaws, some of which I have no hope of ever being resolved. (worthless nVidia drivers... they worked in 10.4!)

Yes it is only a 433MHz target, but 433MHz is pretty high when you think about it. The other thing to keep in mind is that the premade image wants to change the display to about 1024x768 instead of the XO native 1200x900. I enjoyed Psychonauts but I am not clamoring for a sequel. The writing and voice acting were top notch but it just wasn't a fun game to play. Actually, if I could just watch all of the cut scenes, one liners, and other such parts in a two hour animated movie I'd be pretty happy. As a 10+ hour game it just isn't that worth my time for a replay. Yes, I would buy a theoretical sequel but I imagine that there are others who felt the same way I did and probably wouldn't.

Hey, Doublefine! What the fuck is wrong with you? Free money over here!

It's only free money if the game costs nothing to develop and produce. This is definitely not the case. Add in the fact that they are dealing with a known property that didn't perform stellar in retail and it's really difficult to secure funding to produce a sequel that thousands (not millions) of cult fans would go out and purchase.

Nice straw man; your parent's post said nothing about it running on the O X that the iPhone uses. This is about supporting the Macintosh platform.

I play WoW, natively I might add, on a PowerPC based Macintosh. It is running the same OS (10.5.0) that today's Macs are shipping with. It has 3GB of RAM and a NV6800U. It is still under warranty. It is as powerful of a machine as some of the currently shipping Intel Macs.

In short, EVE Online does not have full compatibility with OS X. I commend them for their attempt to support the platform, even if it is Intel only and kludgy, but people should know that it's not full compatibility and the story, as well as their info pages, should make a point to reflect that fact.

Personally, I will not be playing this even on my Intel Mac. I like the ability to use whichever machine I'm sitting at. The fact that they release a gimped Mac client means little as I could already run this under BootCamp or Parallels. Since they have chosen this route to port their game, there will never be a native Mac client and PowerPC Mac users should just stick to WoW. Hell, Intel Mac users may just stick to WoW for that matter.

For instance, RPGs: I hated FFVII but I enjoyed DQ8. Survival horror: I thought RE4 was needlessly frustrating (and yes, I have the Wii version too) but I really enjoyed Eternal Darkness. RTS: Starcraft and War2 get a thumbs up while War3 and AoE get a thumbs down. I would play Wind Waker dozens of times over including the sailing around parts before I'd ever want to play that blurry no-fun mess of Okami again.

While these may be personal opinions, all of those games I just listed received at least a 9 out of 10 score by many reviewers. Except for the fact that once you make the machine start thinking the user begins to stop thinking. If sales knew about this feature then they wouldn't be bothered to care at all what they were copying and sending out to customers.
