Funny story: I took my 7 year old daughter to the matinee showing of "Lilo and Stitch" on July 4th. After seeing sexy/violent trailers for "Matrix Reloaded" and "Die Another Day", I had a feeling that something was wrong. Then I see "Lucasfilm Ltd" and that familiar theme...yup, the theater was mistakenly showing "SW:AOTC".
All of the other parents marched out of the theater with me to get the manager. Within 20 minutes we were watching the correct film (which was pretty good).
I never thought I'd see the day where I would be very upset about seeing a Star Wars movie instead of a Disney one (and given 2 free movie tickets for being "inconvenienced" to boot)!
Everyone rejoices the 30th birthday of Atari, home to such great games as Beat 'Em and Eat 'Em! [gamefaqs.com] and E. T. - the Extra Terrestrial [atariage.com].
You can't be serious. "ET" and the Mystique "adult" games like "Custer's Revenge" and "Bachelorette Party" were horrible.
And to think how much Purina dog chow I had to eat to get that equally-terrible "Chase the Chuckwagon" game! Or that I actually pre-ordered 2600 "Pac-Man" for $40 at JC Penney's!
Don't get me wrong, I love the classic video games, but not those games!
I wouldn't be too upset if the police came over my house and took my old Commodore 64 computers, 300-baud modems, 5 1/4" floppy disks and my dot matrix printers.
I've got alot of other crap in my cellar they can take as well!
You mean to tell me that there are/.ers that (gasp) actually PURCHASED an X-Box? I'm *SHOCKED*! I thought we hated Microsoft, not supported their reign of terror?
Also, for syntax purposes, what is the plural of X-Box: X-Boxs or X-Boxes?
After the debacle that Cox Communications put their customers through earlier in the year by doing such a bang up job converting their High Speed Internet network over from @Home you would think they would try to find ways NOT to p*ss off their user base!!!
Yea, in addition to being put on hold for 3 hours when call technical support, you now have to pay more each month for less bandwidth. Great...
My rate just went up $5/month not that long ago...will it go up more in the near future?
What happened? Did Bill Gates fall down on the way to the courtroom?
I think the whole Slashdot subject is kind of misleading. You would think the guy made a complete fool out of himself by making such outrageous claims like he invented the question mark or something. He was hoping the prosecution was as ignorant about Linux as 99.9% of the world and pulled KDE and GNOME out of his *ss.
Of course, on Slashdot we all act like a bunch of Nick Burns clones ("MOVE!") when anyone even mentions the word "Linux" and especially when they makes claims about Linux and they're WRONG!!!
gobeProductive might have been an Office 2000 killer, but it's certainly not an Office XP killer. Office 2000 was the Windows ME of application-suites...which means it s*cked!
Office XP is basically Office 2000 Second Edition but I do like it alot. Thanks but no thanks!
To have one CD you could pop into an Xbox, a PS2, a Windows machine, or a Linux machine, and play the same game on them all.
I want a disk that I can pop into my Sega Dreamcast, my DVD player or my Linux/Windoze PCs so that I can "enjoy" Tera Patrick and Jenna Jameson no matter where I am!:)
Pete Hines, the director of marketing and public relations Maryland-based Bethesda Softworks says,"It is our policy to stop people from distributing our games for free, be they new titles or classic games. We don't differentiate who we go after based on whether they call it abandonware or warez or a pirated version. If it's ours, it's ours. If you need to own a copy of a classic game, go find it on eBay or a site that allows people to trade or buy used games."
This is the part of many of the game companies' arguments that I can never understand: How exactly do they profit from sales of their older products in the secondary market like eBay, Funcoland, flea markets and yard sales? Answer: they don't see a dime from these transactions (sounds like the RIAA all over again)! They will say that the secondary market will drum up interest in the older games and/or developer's line of products which might translate into sales of the newer products.
So, in effect, this is like advertising. Hello?! Who cares how these potential customers get the older games, just as long as they are playing them (sounds like the shareware marketing model, doesn't it?)!!!
I'm not advocating piracy by any means, but if these companies that own the rights to older games can't come up with a method of selling them to the public (how hard would it be to sell them for a pittance from their own website?!?) then they should be delighted that gamers are at least being exposed to their product line, regardless how it happens (just like if you see advertisements in a magazine you bought or on a billboard you drive by! Regardless of how the message was delivered, it reached its intended target!)
Unfortunately the common way the game companies make money off of their old products is by releasing (mostly) substandard retro-updates of these "classics". How shortsighted!!!
You could also make the argument that the average gamer has a set limit of money they wish to spend on his/her gaming budget in a given year (yea yea, this is highly subjective but whether or not you realize it you do have some type of a budget of your expenses in place). For the sake of argument let's say it's $100/year. Would these companies rather (a) have you spend most (if not all) of your gaming budget on used games on eBay or (b) having cheap (if not free) access to your older games and maybe you buying 1 or 2 of the newest games instead?
Harassing your potential customers by aggressively pursuing copyright infringement of older games they don't actively market seems counterproductive to me.
It seems like the laid-off employees are using the same reasons for theft as many of us/.ers were a year ago when downloading GIGABYTES of music from Napster.
1) We know it's wrong, but we do it anyways
2) We hate the people deciding our fates (*sshole bosses and the RIAA)
3) Because we hate the people deciding our fate, we feel vindicated by stealing
4) It's so easy to do!!!
