You equivocating fool. There is a big difference between "I just got a surprising call, someone wants to bringing us information about our opponent" and "You and your company are on retainer. Here is some money. Deliver us results. There is more money when you bring us something that helps us against our opponent."
I'm confused. The narrative in the news was either that there were 30,000 deleted and unrecoverable emails that were just personal so no one needed to know anything about those, or there were 30,000 deleted and unrecoverable emails that were full of Russian collusion and payoffs to the Clinton foundation.
Either way, I never saw anyone denying there were 30,000 deleted and unrecoverable emails, no matter which side of the political reality spectrum they were viewing the world through. Now you say all of those emails were recovered.
Why is this the first time I am hearing about this?
Or just kill the top 2% of the wealthy, along with their heirs. Seems a lot easier than trying to get bought-and-paid-for politicians to pass rational legislation that benefits anyone other than large corporations and the wealthy.
Every elected official in Washington is a multi millionaire or better. Every one of them. Until my fellow misguided Americans quit installing the very wealthy in near-permanent positions of power there will be no substantial changes.
And no, you simpering idiot, it won't matter if the president is a democrat or a republican. Nor will it matter if congress or the supreme court is dominated by republicans or democrats. They are both just different sides of the same side, namely, not your side.
It's not about me. I only used my self as a convenient example to point out how unthinking individuals can affect others. I could have used others as an example.
If given the choice I would prefer to know how my choices affect others so I can be more responsible for how I show up for others. I assert there are many people who have no idea fragrances can and do have a negative affect on others. I also assert that there may be, within that group, people who would change their behavior if they knew how they were affecting others, not out of a desire to placate others, but out of a desire to be responsible for their impact on others.
I also assert that there are insensitive individuals who really don't care about their impact on others, nor do they seek to be responsible for themselves. And lo, here you are.
Unfortunately, many of the accusations of bigotry, homophobia, and racism thrown at people these days are, in reality, themselves based on the bigotry of the accuser. The lens through which many people look is biased towards taking offense and finding offenders. The result is that even conscientious remarks with depth, sincerity, compassion, and tact can, and often are, interpreted to be offensive on some level.
I bring this up because your statement about "free speech does not equal freedom from negative consequences" does not apply equally. Increasingly, accusers are able to willfully or intentionally misinterpret the speech of others, throw wild accusations that result in unearned negative consequences for an innocent party, and walk away unscathed and unaffected by the untruthful and hurtful statements they have leveled against others. This also invalidates your statement about "people rage over the consequences of being an insensitive jerk" in certain circumstances. Many people are raging because they have been unfairly painted with a broad brush by bigoted people who have a free pass to make unfair and untrue accusations.
Regardless of the minutiae, it is easy to see that the most vehement accusers are not interested in fostering a society where the status quo is freedom from social problems and division. They manufacture controversy intentionally and react to others in a way that is guaranteed to alienate and divide. Until the knee-jerk reaction of these agitators is one of reconciliation, education, and understanding things will only get worse.
For health reasons, I tried running in my neighborhood after work. Shortly after starting the nightly regimen I was plagued by respiratory problems. Turns out working families tend to do lots of laundry in the evening hours when everyone is home. Dryer sheet fragrance is evacuated into the night air which, in turn, enters my lungs where it inflames and agitates my respiratory system something fierce. The result was a distinct loss of health. Quite the opposite of what I was attempting to achieve.
At work there are offices that I cannot go near. Glade plug ins, candle warmers, heavy perfume/cologne, and scented Clorox wipes are the devil. If I am exposed for more than a few moments the rampant sneezing is the least of my concerns. My nose will run like a faucet, my nasal passages will burn (sometimes for hours), I will occasionally have blisters form on my soft palate, and in the worst cases I will experience all of these symptoms followed by days of extreme exhaustion, a sinus infection which may progress to my chest, and delightfully terminated by expectorating large chunks of my own bloody and infected sinus flesh. Ta-da!
People sometimes wonder why I won't shake their hands when I smell cologne on them. Many people get it on their hands when they apply it. When I touch them it gets on my hands and I can sometimes smell it even after showering, twice. Imagine being allergic to the smell of your own hands. Frustration does not begin to encompass the feelings that clamor for my attention when this happens. Putting a fork near my face is detestable, and eating tacos or french fries with my fingers is right out.
There are even challenges when driving a rental or loaner vehicle. The seat belts are usually permeated with an olfactory cacophony of assaulting smells. Every person who has worn that seat belt and who also applied some kind of fragrance to their clothing is now evident to my nose. It's the gift that keeps on giving, too. Not only does it irritate the hell out of me while driving, it also gets on my clothes so even after I have left the car the scent continues to accost me.
So, next time you douse yourself with something you think smells good, or you flood your work space with fragrances, just realize there may be someone near you who regards this as a not-so-subtle poison. If you are offended by cigarettes realize that your perfume, or even your fabric softener, can be more immediately detrimental to the health of some individuals around you than cigarettes are. There are times I wonder how many elderly people and children with weakened immune systems and sensitivity to fragrances have been killed by infections spurred on by Chanel No 5. I am convinced this is a non-zero number.
Your quote reminded me of something I had almost forgotten completely. Quite a while ago (maybe over 15 years) I read an article about countries who had introduced processed sugar to their collective diet much more recently than the US had. Since the timing was more recent, there were more comprehensive modern medical records available from which the author could glean data about changes in public health. It is difficult to recall the details, but I seem to remember a 60 year time span from the introduction of processed sugar being important. I also seem to remember over that time the incidence of heart disease growing drastically, as well as other health issues becoming much more common.
At the time I also remember the author being excoriated and undermined as a kook who was after the sugar industry. With the recent revelations about the sugar industry paying off Harvard scientists to tell everyone sugar is not responsible for heart disease I want to go back and read it again. I even think the article was a distillation of a book the author had written. Wish I could remember more details, my google fu has failed me in finding the article.
I want to see what happens when proficient Go playing humans begin to intensely study the games that AlphaGo plays. Just because that system is currently better than a human doesn't mean a human can't emulate the emulator.
Problem: Advertising, political, and social media giants are using similar implementations to decode the human stimulus/response matrix with vast amounts of data encompassing the full history of social media, cell phone tracking data, website histories, and god knows what else.
The result? Our new overlords, should they come to parturition, will be born with innate knowledge of exactly how to control us. Chances are we won't even notice when they take over. It could have already happened and we would be none the wiser.
It is convenient scapegoating as well. "Look at those fat smokers! They brought this on themselves. They don't get to have what you have because it's not good for society. The doctors who deign to operate on any of us should not be forced to participate in enabling these transgressors against good health and society."
Rather than: "All citizens acting in a lawful manner will be served the same way. The services provided are based on the citizen being a citizen, not circumstances which the government will control, and through which the government will control the individual."
I used to play Quake 2 on a few servers with the game speed cranked way up, rail gun only (like a sniper rifle, point and shoot weapon,) and a laser hook thingy that you could aim at a wall waaaaay over there and it would pull you towards it at amazing speed. With that and some other adjustments it became a fast twitch freakout session every time I logged in.
I died what seemed like a thousand times the first day. Then I started to get the hang of moving fast in 3 dimensions, aiming and shooting while flying through the air, pinpointing enemies and blowing their heads up. I played on that server for a few weeks, going from continual fountain of gibbs to a pretty damned good player. The most fun I have ever had playing online, without a doubt.
Then the server went down for some reason, so back to the regular servers I went. Everything was in slow motion. It felt like I had an eternity to aim and shoot. My accuracy was insane and I was VERY hard to hit. I had constant accusations of cheating after that. Lots of ragequits and reports to server admins, a few kicks but luckily no bans. Then the fast server came back up! So I invited all of the jackasses who I could find that had accused me of cheating to come play on that server with me to see what was what. Some liked it, most left and all of them that tried it shut the eff up once they saw all of the players who had adapted to the faster game speed.
I love that article you linked to. It is one of the most primitive and ham-handed illustrations of what companies do with a minimal amount of your personal information. In that case they were able to determine when a woman began to believe she is pregnant.
You think that Facebook doesn't introduce specific targeted "ads" and media to your feed and then figures out how that stimulus changes your your discourse, click patterns, and even word use as a result? You think Facebook doesn't intentionally try to influence your political habits by what they show you? You think that information isn't sold to the people who want to influence your votes and ideas?
Everything you divulge to them is just another piece of your ass you are cutting off and they are selling back to you through a third party. Its incestuously sick and twisted.
1) She contacted a "client" via text or voice with her phone. 2) She used that phone to access her Facebook.
And, you're done. That is all that is required for them to link up.
Yes I know this is true. As soon as I call some clients or text them from my phone they begin to show up in my Facebook recommendations. If I save them as a contact it happens faster, especially if I include both email and phone numbers in the contact.
Words do not cause stress. You create stress in your mind. Just because you create stress internally and attribute to some external influences does not change the truth about where it originates.
Just remember, when you experience stress or distress it is because you are insufficiently processing the external world due to internal issues.
You are, in essence, malfunctioning internally when you experience negative stress. That you point towards the external stimulus, like words, indicates that you are severely malfunctioning internally. A good starting point is to focus on those subjects which when you encounter them your desire to be rational and intelligent is replaced with a desire to create anger and stress. If you can get your head out of reaction mode and see past where you have given your control up to rampant, uncontrolled emotionalism you may get a glimpse of the unresolved past issue that you are bringing into the present with you. Once you can see the past in your interpretation of the present you can free yourself from it and maintain objectivity more effectively.
The only problem with this is that when someone identifies with their stress, anger, and outrage as much as it appears you do, eliminating these things is seen as an attack on your ego/identity. It is actually the opposite of that, but as you well know, stupid people doing incredibly stupid and self destructive things are not easily dissuaded from doing them.
And they already have the information they were after. No need to keep pulling down tons of bits when you already have your data farms overfilled with the targeted intel.
Since Puerto Rico is financially incapable of even repairing small portions of the electric system it had and is relying on outside funding from a number of sources to rebuild the grid, yes, this is would be a great time to create a 100% green island powered completely with renewables. Their oil powered generators could use a revamp, and the wind farms they have made it through the storms so expanding those is a good idea.
Unfortunately, I don't think the "Never waste a good crisis" idea was ever intended to result in beneficial results for the people. Those that have practiced it's political expediency have been those eager to line their pockets, take unfair advantage of spooked and stampeding voters, and force through ideas and legislation that is destructive or disempowering to the electorate.
If our own politicians hadn't made their careers and reinforced their power and control for the last 100 years by exploiting racial divides this wouldn't be a problem...
Chiming in here. I think that individualism and collectivism are best represented by their adherents in times of low economic pressure and relative safety. Remove even the appearance of safety and comfort and many people will swing violently toward the other axis of operation.
Gotta love humans. Inconsistency is the only consistent thing about them.
Seriously though, I have no mod points, otherwise you would get some. Hacking your own meat is what I like to refer to at my "working definition of free will."
Acknowledge you are not in control of most of the things you do. Your physical stuff has predilections and propensities that are, in most ways, hidden from your conscious thought. In fact, most of the "thinking" done in your head is non-verbal. You can't directly address those parts of your brain, but they sure can directly address "you," and at a level that is pre-linguistic and very hard to differentiate and separate from your conscious experience.
Another example is habitual behavior. There is a trigger that initiates the habit sequence. Then once the habit behavior pattern is initiated prefrontal processing decreases drastically. Finally, once the habit software has run its course the thinky-thinky parts of the brain return to normal activity levels. A simple version of my "working definition of free will" is being able to harness the machinery of your meat-brain and create and/or eliminate habitual behaviors that you would like to change.
I see your simple position experiment as another reflection of manipulating the meat part of the brain stuffs that inform and provide structure to the conscious "I think therefore I am" part of the experience of having a brain. Instructive and informative. Thank you for sharing it!
Imagine being this guy, born without much brain at all, and yet not knowing it until much later in life: http://www.rifters.com/crawl/?...
The human brain is very good at doing the things a brain does, sometimes even when all of the parts we think are necessary are not there in the proper proportions or even there at all.
Valproic acid has been shown to generate plasticity in some individuals, allowing them to learn how to match pitch much later in life than has ever been demonstrated. Wondering if it could help with split brain patients...

I would call it one group. They are the people who, if they delete emails and computer records, are not held accountable.
Then there is the rest of us.

Man I miss that game.
Maybe a 30 second time delay would help?
Or dry them, powder them (coffee grinder works), and immerse them in lemon juice for about 30 minutes.
Who am I kidding, this doesn't make them taste any better, but it does make them about three times more potent.
