./ has already done this. (see poll) Dont think they dont trace post submission IP addr to ISP. Before long it will be commonplace for a business to be able to force an ISP to reveal who their customers are. They will soon be coming for you, you filthy bastard!!
Generally the are talking about the render times etc. But what about the load time? When you are talking about windows pcs, you wont find something faster than explorer because its already open all the time. This gives it an advantage because it will always open faster than other browsers on others systems because its built right in. I will use mozilla tho to block those pesky popups.
They also usually play mp3s. You can get them from walmart for 60-80. One of my friends has had one since Christmas and he loves it - no problems. So far.
under "direct marketing," like reminder updates from stores you cleared to send it to you.
So what about when you sign up for some service etc and there is some tiny checkbox you are supposed to "uncheck" to not sell your email address to every spammer in existance. Does that count as "Direct Marketing" since I "requested" that these companies contact me? Do I sound bitter? Yea probably.
"But individual tech people are probably better off spending their energy writing code than being part of the political process."
Excuse me? Last I heard this was a democracy, even if a republic. While politicians DO make the final decisions, WE (the people that is) are supposed to be represented. Obviously this isn't happening. In this case, who is going to fight for our rights? The legislators? The companies?(who you suggest in your article) Heck no! What's more, how is a congressman supposed to know what his constituency wansts unless they tell him? There MUST be communication between the government and the people. If this stops happening, then the politicians will be right to vote however their paid customers (Disney) want them to vote.
Gouge? What are you talking about? The movie industry is just providing consumers with a choice to purchase whichever product best suits their needs! Most companies take the needs and preferences of consumers above shallow bids to gouge the market for as much money as it can get! Silly slashbots!
Since I can still build my computer (and chose to do so) this affects me none. I think it may be interesting for the anti-trsut trial since it is obvious that they are leveraging their stregth in the market to the possible detrement of other products. That should not stop IBM from adding servers that come installed with linux, so again, not a huge impact here.
Honestly though...every company is evil and is only out to do one thing - make money for its shareholders. I have thought about this before. If I was to really stick to my guns i would have to boycott all products from damn near every company. They are all evil, because their whole reason for existing is skewed towards making money by any means necessary. They have a different hat for each event - on the one hand Sony provides some really cool electronics and media for geeks, but the other hand will slap lawsuits in a heartbeat if it thinks it can make money somehow (see DMCA). The bottom line is that one or two people from slashdot each boycotting their most loathed org (mine is RIAA) is completely ineffective, and any drop in sales is usually attributed to piracy anyway.
I agree. I have been boycotting CD purchase for the last year. I did break down at one point and get a Timo Maas CD, but since that is import I am not sure if RIAA gets a cut? But when you tell people (even your own family) about boycotting RIAA they look at you like you are a nut. That is what I dislike about our society right now...protest anything and you are made to look like you are crazy by the popular media outlets. Just like those nuts who protest the world bank so loudly.
I have never understood why they have the "set up a home network and die" attitude, but let you buy extra IPs for 10$. Obviously those folks who want more IPs are running home networks right?
So in essence, the individual holding the patent has won. He has his money. Sensible enough.
They spend thousands only to have it hacked in the first month by some 16 year old kid. It never fails, when will they learn?
Yea, until Starbucks decides to crash the network with its own pay service on the same band.
until it becomes illegal? at what point do we jump in and say "stop!", and will it then be too late?

Now is the proper time for me to reveal my patented SPAM-JET - delivering accrate and timely spam to email users at the speed junk!
Right now you're sitting in the belly of a platnum dragon, so you better ask yourself where your priorities lie.
Holy NASCAR Batman!
i thought you said "tentacle feedback" which isnt all that far fetched considering some japanese cartoons.....
i think thats the point, its practically the same as the "no OS" option.

that should be +4 hillarious. or maybe -2 blasphemous....not sure which.

And why do some slashdotters have to correct people by being jerks? Sheesh.
Office 97 or XP? Office XP is pretty nice from what I have seen! I want to get Open Office going once I get a chance and see how that works out.

without anything fancy going on on my end.
Solution: Simple ethernet network with lowgrade (read: cheap) linux box with two NICs. Works like a champ every time! Linux, how do you do it?
How much junk mail do you get at home? Bulk rates would probably come in to play too.
