I have a Yes 90125 CD I bought in 1985 and it plays just fine. The only CD I have that has visible "pin holes" is Pink Floyd Ummagumma, but it also plays and rips fine. Way before I bought a computer I used to record my CDs onto video tape using my Sony HiFi VTR. I still have tapes I recorded 15 years ago that still play just fine and are so close to "CD quality" that you would have to know what artifacts to listen for to tell the difference.
If most users would quit being so cheap and buy a firewall appliance like a linksys router, or (for the more savvy) build a Coyote linux box we wouldn't have half of these problems. I run Win2k, Solaris and SuSE linux. The linux box is the only one exposed to the net and hasn't been rooted/hijacked once in the three years it has been exposed. Running stuff like Zone Alarm is like giving a band aid to someone who has a big gaping wound.
"One has to ask though, is blocking an entire country like this the future of spamfighting, or has something gone horribly wrong?"
You bet your ass it is. Fighting spam requires extreme measures when the offending domain moves slower than a snails pace to put a stop to it. I have hundreds of domains blocked either because they did nothing, or I just got tired of all the spam/viruses being relayed through compromised windows boxes.
I thought infiltrating anyones network regardless of what's going on is illegal? Wouldn't the campus IT people be able to invoke the Patriot Act or the DMCA and file a lawsuit against the MPAA/RIAA for terrorist activity?
Going on these missions would also demand that the computer/electronic/ship equipment be designed to work for decades. It would be a bitch if the flight control computers hard drive crapped out 3 months into the mission or crashed because Windows XP was their OS of choice and then needed to call home.
I see lots of people (mostly women) walking, driving and shopping with their cell phone glued to their ear. Not only do I think this is rude, but distracted users could easily walk into oncomming traffic. WTF is so important that you cannot put down that stupid phone and pay attention to what you are doing?
I for one welcome our new cell phone jamming overlords
Well guys I run Solaris and have been using Real Player 8 for most of my mp3 and rm files. I do not know if Quicktime let alone Windows media player are even avaliable for my platform. I have never had a problem with Real Player, except finding the one for your platform of choice can be a little daunting. I just don't want to be forced to run other OSes just to watch streaming media.
The overwhelming problem with BPL is that not only does is radiate RF hash, but I could take a transmitter that puts out as little as 4 watts and completely disrupt a BPL signal. Other countries have tried BPL but have banned it (japan for one) because of the interference problems it produces on the HF bands.
But instead of accepting the facts, the power company is going to try it anyway because the people in charge are even more clueless than the most brain dead computer user. How long do you think the power company is going to put up with "My Internet service keeps going away!" complaints from their user base before they do the right thing and run fiber to the households.
Sure it may be fast and cheap, but it's suseptable to nearby radio transmitters and will be the most unreliable Internet connection out there. With the right radio equipment, packets could be sniffed, you could DoS the entire neighborhood with a CB radio or other low band or amateur HF transceiver. Not to mention all the RF hash that will be delivered to your house on a otherwise clean power line.
Amen brother! This is the reason I run my own mail server, if Alan Ralsky sends me an e-mail I just block the entire domain and only pass wanted e-mail addresses. Spammers are shit, will always be shit and will be nothing better than shit. If there were anyting lower than child molesters, animal abusers and spammers would fit the bill...
This is the very same reason I will be buying the 15" Powerbook with the superdrive in the next few months. I'm sick of running Windows to watch DVDs and my Linux box is incapable of this amoung other things, but is still an exelent choice as a server platform.
To seriously get the space program off and running it needs to be sponsered by big companys. Our government will not have the infinite bottomless pockets to fund a program of this magnatude. If you ever watched "Mission to Mars" you will notice ads on the rover, something similar will have to happen in order to reach mars in a timely mattrer.
I would rather be locked into a iPod than anything Microsoft would bring out. I think HP is doing the right thing and Microsoft is seeing it's power being widdled away one small step at a time.
I played around with my parents new e-mac. Not a bad machine for what it is, and OS X is really cool. I was even able to find the terminal and ssh into my linux box. There are even some old console games hidden in the depths of the OS. So I think this year I'm going to treat myself to a new 15" powerbook:)
The CPCC,RIAA and MPAA just don't get it. Punshing law abiding citizens with your "pirating tax" will never work. Hard working people like me are fucking fed up with your "bought lock stock and barrel" tarrifs and taxes. This is just one of the reasons I haven't bought any of your over priced music CDs in years. Just because I buy hard drives, CDRs and video tapes does NOT give you the right to charge ANY sur taxes because the media "could be used to pirate music". Why don't you start charging taxes on hubs, switches, routers and sound cards.
Better start buying old computer hardware people, before the CPCC,RIAA and MPAA force the hardware manufactures into putting "approved" DRM controls in the hardware.
Sorry for the ranting, but this shit just gets under my skin...

What's the difference? I personally think there should be astronomical fines, terminations and prison time for RIAA executives.

You may not be physically fit but I do appaud you for having the balls (no pun intended) to post on /.

Asking the RIAA to "get it" is alot like getting the sun to quit fusing hydrogen into helium...
I haven't bought a CD in years, I guess this will have to extend to download purchases...

I just hope they (MS) dosen't port Windows XP to the Sparc platform, wouldn't that suck!

Yeah, they're called the RIAA..
Or it was written by the anti-virus software people to boost their sagging sales...

Kind of reminds me of a Simpsons episode..
Oh man, I pulled a SCO..

If Think Geek could get someone to make these I would buy one just for the sheer geekyness of it ;)

Linux box
1 used Edge FX U2 $200 (384 megs 30 gig hd PII450)
SuSE 8.0 Proffesional $80
total = $280
Windows box
1 used Edge FX U2 $200 (384 megs 30 gig hd PII450)
Windows 2000 Server $999
total = $1199
Hmmmm... let me think, guess I'll take the first option
Call some one who gives a shit Alan Ralsky.
Well that "not-so-bright" grandmother should have been arrested for animal abuse.
