I suspect a lens made entirely of sapphire glass would have pretty shitty optics. Using it as a cover would allow improved scratch protection and retain acceptable optical properties. Not much different than putting a lens protector over a camera lens. What's the problem?
Pretty neat idea but in every air-gapped environment I've worked in, getting the cellphone or recording device in would be the more difficult portion of this exercise.
I feel for the guy. My Dad was an engineer on the Aerojet 260 project. They felt, all along, the segmented approach was unsafe. It was just that NASA and USAF never agreed. Still have a bunch of photos and some news clippings. So Thiokol got the bid and my Dad's work on the largest rocket motor ever fired is just one for the history books.

Then we can spend all that fuel looking for a piece of floating garbage. How in the hell did this get green-lighted?
Infuriating? Really?
Maybe try switching to decaf.
So why is someone plugging a USB drive with FIREFOX into an "air gapped" computer?
Looks like they've re-invented "sneakernet".
Seriously. If security is that important that you air-gap a system, why aren't you locking down the USB ports?
Developing a, super secure, file based Intranet?

Ever heard of LOGJAM, DROWN or FREAK?

Wish I wasn't out of mod points. Nice job editors, greenlighting a paywalled link.
