I suspect a lens made entirely of sapphire glass would have pretty shitty optics. Using it as a cover would allow improved scratch protection and retain acceptable optical properties. Not much different than putting a lens protector over a camera lens. What's the problem?
Pretty neat idea but in every air-gapped environment I've worked in, getting the cellphone or recording device in would be the more difficult portion of this exercise.

Still have a bunch of photos and some news clippings. So Thiokol got the bid and my Dad's work on the largest rocket motor ever fired is just one for the history books.
