Isn't it the goal to get in early, to get a good ROI, and if it fails, just write it off? Maybe I'm missing something here, but other than the opportunity to invest in another venture, what did the investors lose?

Geez, i remember this push for the paperless office in the early '90s. I gave up on the idea over a decade ago - and I work in web! Companies are still unsure about digital signatures, still like paper record, and scribbling a note on a piece of paper is sometimes a better way to make notes than to try and find a way to attach a note - much less a diagram - to an electronic document, spreadsheet or pdf
