  1. Re:Chicken or Egg? on Cathy Rogers Responds Without Crashing · · Score: 4, Interesting
I guess I've never thought of it as "boy stuff" because my mom is an engineer. I'll never forget the first computer I actually owned. I'd been begging for my own computer for years, so she finally put one together for me, plopped me in front of it, and explained to me that even though it was incapable of running any of the games I wanted to play, I could write my own. And then she taught me how to program.

It didn't even occur to me that women were under-represented in the engineering world until I actually started working, but even now I cringe when people call it "boy stuff". So it struck me as ironic that Cathy said she didn't know why there aren't more female engineers and then, a few paragraphs later, referred to engineering as "boy stuff." ;)

  2. Male-domination in engineering on Cathy Rogers Responds Without Crashing · · Score: 3, Interesting
Cathy on why the engineering world is so male-dominated:
    "oh lord i don't know."

Cathy on how she comes up with these shows:
"don't know quite how i have managed to end up doing so many shows about boy stuff though."

Perhaps, Cathy, the engineering world is so dominated by males because females think of it as "boy stuff"?

  5. The easiest solution on Software to Buffer and Delay Audio Playback? · · Score: 2
I've seen one comment hint at this, but everyone else seems to be suggesting complex technical solutions when this is really quite simple. Winamp will stream MP3 files even while they're being written to, so all you need to do is this:
    1. Encode the audio from the radio to MP3 in realtime using the Winamp Live Input plugin.
    2. In another Winamp session, manually start playback of the file after the appropriate delay.

    Voila, it's that easy.

They should make more of a point that the North American railway system needs a major overhaul in order to support faster trains.

Is it too much to ask that submitters read the article they're submitting? The entire reason this train was developed is so it could be used on existing tracks with a minimum of modifications. It's right there in the second paragraph of the article: "Bombardier believes its 240-kilometres-an-hour JetTrain is the answer to providing high-speed rail service throughout North America using existing track and without the prohibitive cost of electrifying rail networks."

I agree with you, I find it annoying when an article is posted referencing a software product I've never heard of, and the article summary makes no attempt to describe what the software does. I guess I just don't have a problem sifting through this information myself. If the name of the software looks interesting enough, I might do some more research and figure out what it does (as I did with Moonlight|3D). Otherwise, I'll move on.

It's a little silly to turn this into a big issue. I think it's hilarious when people demand perfection from sites like Slashdot. People don't seem to realize that Slashdot is nothing more than editorial brain-wanking. Most of the editors could care less whether or not the readers are interested in something; all that matters is that the editors themselves are interested. If you want it the other way around, I suggest you take a look at Kuro5hin.

"Love it or leave it," is a very childish attitude. However, I won't stoop to the same level. Keep advocating that attitude if you like. See what happens to Slashdot if the minority voices decide to leave. Maybe it'll mean less bitching and whining, but in the long run it also means stagnation.

I think boycotting Slashdot because they post articles about software without telling you what the software does is a lot more childish than just ignoring such posts and enjoying the stuff you're actually interested in. But hey, that's just me.

Honestly, how would they be able to figure out that you are using a local proxy program to filter out all their advertising?

Easy. They look at their logs and say, "Well now, it looks like the user from 12.34.56.78 loaded our front page, but none of our popup ads! And it appears a user from that IP is logged on as 'johnsmith'. Looks like it's time to fire off a legal threat to Mr. John Smith!"

Not that they'd have a snowball's chance in hell of winning any kind of legal action for something so silly, but it's totally possible for them to correlate their log data to determine which users are blocking ads. A workaround would be to use something like the BannerBlinds plugin for Mozilla, which still loads the ads, but then removes them from the page layout when displaying the page.

    Airports are not privately owned.

Actually, Mr. Bitgeek sir, they are privately owned, unless you're talking about an Air Force base or other military airfield. Cities often provide incentives and funding to get airports built, since they're good for commerce, but commercial airports are privately owned. If they weren't, they wouldn't be called commercial airports, dumbass.

Furthermore, you apparently wanked your way through your high school Government class. Or perhaps you dropped out of high school so you could fuck your uncle's sheep while all the other kids were away. In any case, YOU HAVE NO GODDAMN RIGHT TO GET ON A PLANE. It's a commercial service that you're paying for, you wang-gobbling jackass. Since it's a commercial service, you have a right to exactly jack and shit.

You seem to think I'm saying you don't have the right to refuse a search. I'm not. You have every right to refuse a search. But if you refuse a search, you have no right to board a commercial airliner.

And, by the way, the reason a lawyer wouldn't take the case is because good lawyers don't take cases where they'll be fighting a losing battle with the law on the other guy's side. It's simple fucking elementary logic, but I guess a noxious pustule like you wouldn't understand such things.
