  1. It's the Hardware not the OS on A Look at IRIX 6.5.17 · · Score: 2, Insightful

IRIX is doomed. SGI needs to compete against the movement to replace expensive high end workstations with economical Intel based Linux clusters. Ask Lucas, they dumped a bunch of SGI opting for Linux. It's basic economics.

  2. Apple partners on Satellite Internet Service for Macs? · · Score: 1

Apple seems to have a problem in developing strategic partnerships in a number of areas. Jobs wants Apple to be driving force in the CG world but there isn't a significant accelerated 3D graphic card for the Mac. He's the frickin CEO over at Pixar and if you watch the extras on the Monsters, Inc DVD all you see is SGI! Sitting around talking about "fur," for cripes sake do something!

  3. Where is the responsibility? on When Do You Really Need a Lawyer? · · Score: 1

I just skimmed the comments so excuse any redundancy but I'd like to know if there was any firing in this guy's IT dept., and what cave has this person been sleeping in? Anti-virus control is a responsibility of every end-user. I say this guy was inviting problems.

  4. stick to programming on Open Source Art? · · Score: 1

So, let me get this straight. If it looks like an image, as opposed to non-image data, it becomes art? Or is it that plus the examination of the code which created the image and the verdict of other programmers who examine that code the deciding factor in deeming that it is art? Two or more left brained geeks trying to fulfill the empty space in right side gray matter. Keep the day job.

  5. have a wiff while you're at it on Fighting Music Piracy with Glue · · Score: 1

Record execs have been sniffing glue for years. It's about time they gave the brown nose a rest and injected it elsewhere.

When a desire to believe supersedes common sense, scientific analysis and verification people will get screwed. It's pretty scary how so many people, wielding so much money can be so fundamentally stupid.

  11. hypocrisy on Georgia Tech Cracks Down on Learning · · Score: 1

Cheating is an intregal component of learning. Today's student will be eaten alive in the real world if they don't develop sucessful cheating skills. I think every University should develop an academic program focused on cheating. It would be a prerequisite for law school and MBA programs.

  12. Microsoft should shut-up on What Should Microsoft's Open Source Strategy Be? · · Score: 1

You don't know shit about how business works in "Hollywood." This is a smart move by Fox. Capitalize now before the kiddies realize they're being spoon fed garbage. A few will break free, others will continue to consume trash. However trashy this movie will be it will make money. In fact it has already made money for some.

  16. Nationalism on Chinese Explorers 'Discovered America'? · · Score: 1

Interesting and strange sense of nationalism going on here. This topic has a long history of cultures who claim this "discovery" with a sense of arrogant pride. There was probably some intelligent life here before all of these claims. Think about it, do any of you really give a fuck? What does it have to do with any of you?

  17. Writers and research on Will CS Students Switch From Microsoft? · · Score: 1

Whatever happened to the days when writers seriously researched before putting something out to the public? I can't wait for this KDE thing to happen--wow, a GUI for Linux! It might have helped if the author experienced Linux before picking up the pen. Oh well, Linux rules, Microsoft drools and foams at the mouth.

  18. mismanaged on Do You Like Your Job? · · Score: 1

A big part of the problem, in a lot of organizations, is that people make it into management positions based on tenure rather than ability. Too often these are people who themselves recognize that they couldn't cut it in the subordinate position so they focus their energy on moving into a managerial position. Take a sales organization, the people who are doing well in sales have a good set of skills, they're being compensated well, so they stay put or move to a company that has more to offer (often a company with better management.) Those who are struggling focus their efforts at climbing up the food chain by moving into a management position frequently managing those who out performed them in the previous position. The best managers are those with the ability to teach others how to manage themselves. These people are few and far between.
