Being as this $150 fee is for early cancellation of service, I believe the move is aimed at trying to keep customers! The only people affected by this are people who wish to stop having Tivo after all.
Yes, clearly a show set on a spaceship, where plot involves a constantl battle for survival with robots intent on their destruction after nuking their home planets, is not Science Fiction!
Dukes of Hazzard! Slashdot trolls used to be of much higher quality...;)
In such a list, I get the feeling that Farscape MIGHT only stand a chance of getting in. As for Lexx, First Wave, this new BSG, and many of the other shows experiencing a brief period of popularity or who have a dedicated and vocal but small audience... they wouldn't stand a chance.
Have you watched the new BSG? The fact that you lump it in with Lexx and the frankly crap First Wave would make me think you haven't. Even if it was cancelled after the first season it would still go down as one of the best science fiction series of all time, its that good. I'm no expert on Farscape, so can't comment on how good that is, but you can't dismiss the new BSG as just in the list due to it "experiencing a brief period of popularity" (whatever that means - the show has only really been on for a brief period).
I'm a huge B5 fan and a Firefly fan, but Battlestar Galactica (new) is a better show than both of those. Agreed about Blake's 7 though, should be in at least the top 20, but I don't know if it ever got shown on US TV.
Everyone complains how trig is not useful, but perhaps its useful because it is hard and is one of the few things left in schools today that actually mentally challenges students.
Verizon, Cingular, T-Mobile, etc, need to start charging sensibly
Out of that list, only Verizon charge for an incoming SMS. They used to charge 2c a SMS, but have now upped it to 10c. No other cell phone company does this as far as I know.
I know this is slightly off-topic - but how is Netscape like Apple?
Apple actually have a business plan, where they sell a product and make a healthy profit (see recent bumper profits made by Apple). I've spent $1000s on Apple products personally.
Netscape on the other hand, I used there products exclusively for over 5 years, and yet I never paid them a dime or clicked on a single ad to fund them.
I think the "Hops Flavor" in beer was designed as a replacement for Horse Piss. I actually prefer lighter ales and asian rice beers.
Rice beer and "lighter ales" (whatever they may be) all contain hops to give them that "beer flavour". You obviously don't like "hoppy" beers, but even the most piss weak tasteless beers out there have hops in them.
'm not claiming that "Thief" was the first game to employ any stealth techniques into the gameplay. Many games had some instances where the character could be hidden, or certain techniques that could be used to avoid triggering an enemy attack. However, as far as I can remember, "Thief" was the first game to do something comparable to "Splinter Cell".
Metal Gear Solid for the Playstation came out 2 months before Thief on the PC. This goes back to what everyone has been saying though, Metal Gear invented the genre.
If you use the area code #401 it will activate over Ethernet. No telephone line needed. This is how I did my TiVo, it has never been near any phone line/VoIP or anything else other than a ethernet cable.
It just doesn't work very well. It's interface runs slowly (on my 1Ghz G4 Powerbook) and it doesn't fit in well with the rest of the operating system. Also the Powerpoint clone doesn't actually work properly as I was unable to get it to run the slideshow full screen, which makes it effectively useless for anything other than composing presentations.
I use OpenOffice all the time on Linux, but for my Mac I went out and bought MS Office as I needed Office software. OpenOffice on X11 just doesn't work well enough for it to be any use.
Just wait until you see the Battlestar Galactica series (not the mini-series). Its the best and most intelligent Sci-Fi to come out of television in years.
Or my other favorite: "Ahh... moon... and earth... it's beautiful. You know... if I start this moon spinning like this... and the earth movement like this... they will never get to see the other side! Lets see them explain how that just 'happened to occure'":}
Here you're showing the trouble that most people who "debunk" science show, ignorance of the facts.
Its called "Tidal Locking"
e.g: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tidal_locking
Read that and understand why the same side of the Moon always faces the Earth.
I'm glad someone posted this, after reading all the "why don't we have this in the US?" posts I was starting to wonder if I was going mad and there wasn't really a PCMCIA Verizon EvDO card in my laptop right now.
Interestingly the software for the thing displays the Vodaphone logo pretty prominantly.
Judging by your comments you haven't used OSX at all. For one try using the Activity Monitor which turns its icon into a realtime graph of CPU usage.
I have another program than shows the CPU temperature on the menubar, and Fire (an IM app) augments its icon with information about what services your are logged onto and how many of your buddies are online.
Mail.app also adds the number of new emails to its icon, elimating the need for a seperate "biff" type program (yes, you have to run Mail.app all the time, but thats no big deal).
Why the hell is this comment modded insightful, presumably the mods have never used an OS other than Linux, otherwise they'd know what this guy is saying is bullshit.
One of the best things about the internet is that you can pretty much guarantee that the weird fucks that talk to you on it don't live anywhere near you, so you'll never have to be stalked by them in real life.
Dear slashdot, I am looking for some kind of input device that allows me to enter words onto my computer. Can you help.
Seriously, why is this on the front page - when anyone with half a brain can figure out the answer is either a $40 USB key or an iPod or equivalent depending on the size.
I have a Sony Clie TH55 which has built in WiFi, and I regularly use it to surf the web (Netfront), read my email (Clie Mail or VersaMail), use AvantGo in "online mode" (i.e. downloads stuff in real time), ssh to my work linux machine (TuSSH). Its incredibly useful.
Frankly your comment reminds me of people who couldn't figure out what the internet was for 10 years ago.
I think you'll find that laptops today do not have an "exponentially" higher power consumption than a laptop 10 years ago. In fact in those 10 years apart from CPU speed improvements, there have been massive improvements in getting devices to have lower power consumption, meaning that even given that battery technology hasn't improved that much, we're able to run a 2Ghz laptop for about the same amount of time that a 33Mhz laptop would have ran 10 years ago.
Look at the Beatles now, while they should be reconized for what they did, most of the music itself hasn't aged well and the few gems that are there don't sparkle any more than current music.
The "few gems"? I take it non of the moderators of this comment have ever listened to The Beatles then? Its hard to adequately explain how wrong the top poster here is. Sure the early work of the Beatles may be showing its age, but pretty much anything from Help! onwards any band worth its salt would kill to be able to write/perform today.
If you had said the Bay City Rollers I might have agreed with your analogy. Like Star Wars they too were very popular with "the kids" in the 70s and in actual fact were commercial (although enjoyable) pap.

Ah shit. I stand corrected. I guess I'm sticking on my AT&T contract for now. Charging for incoming SMS's is insane.

Unless you're American, in which case its check.

Amazing that someone can be modded up to +5 Informative for saying.

Weren't there any protection to somehow shield these expensive vehicles? Or is it because they didn't think any natural disaster may hit Florida?
They were protected, hence why the Shuttles were undamaged.
The VAB was damaged, which is unsurprising as its a big (3rd largest by volume in the world) square building, and as such catches the wind a little.

charging people 10x for "data lines" for modems over 9600bps
Wrong. You can get 14.4kbps for free with any Verizon phone. Fast speeds start costing you $$$.
What is it, stupid question time?
