It would be easy to write off Xbox Live, but I don't think that would be very wise. By all accounts the Xbox live service is very slick, feature packed and easy to use. If M$ are smart they will see which way the wind is blowing and find a way to offer game publishers incentives (financial or otherwise).

ok I don't want to turn this into a tech support thread but I am having my first real experience with linux at the moment.

I have installed RH8 and am trying to use it as a router, managed to get it working with my adsl connection (no mean feat considering I'm a linux newbie) and am now trying to get my WinXP boxen to access the net through the linux box over my home ehternet network.

I'm told to do this I need to learn the "iptables" program and learn how to forward ip's.

whats my point ?, my point is that the router also has a dual boot with Win2K, and it's a complete doddle to set it up as a router.

So why doesn't iptables have a simple gui frontend that helps set things up ?.

I had the same reaction as you when I read it, the article seems to be written by someone who doesn't understand the practicalites of what he was suggesting. Saying that, while Longhorn almost certainly will be compatible with other NT based os's, that doesn't necesarily mean that MS are not going to try go in the direction in the future.

Perhaps we should be giving people with good sounding ideas around $10M to try to make them work.

  13. Look to the future on The Space Shuttle Program: What Next? · · Score: 2, Insightful

It's time to start slowly retiring the shuttles, they have been very useful and their place in space exploration should not be forgotten. It may seem unwise to retire them when we don't have a decent alternative but neccesity is the mother of invention.

Sorry but this is misleading, the CPU's for the PS2 and GC are both specifically designed for games, the xbox is still more powerful but it is a lot closer than those numbers represent.

The xbox is running a x86 intel chip, I'm sure most of us here don't need to be reminded that the current x86 chips we use today are descendants of of chips designed purely to crunch numbers for business applications. Quite a lot of CPU cycles are wasted in current computers, if you were trying to design a CPU for an interactive entertainment system you would not design it like an x86 chip.

Also the fact that the PS2 is 18 months older than the xbox explains why it's spec seems to be unimpressive.

  20. Re:It's about time on Ogg Vorbis Portables On The Way · · Score: 3, Insightful

It should be pointed out that the notion that Ogg Vorbis is provides better quality audio is not universally accepted. Audio quality is incredibly difficult to quantify as it is subjective. Even if you ignore all the different variables (CBR vs VBR, quality of audio equipment, etc.) one person may make very different judgements from another (especially with Vorbis and Mp3 being so close).

And most tech reviews I have read seem to indicate that the different compression formats (Vorbis, Mp3 and WMA) all have different strengths when it comes to particular types of music.
