So if I am an IT services provider looking after systems for my Customers and need to patch this ... then the first thing they will ask is "what performance impact did your testing of the patch show?" ... which I can't now tell them as it would be providing them with comparison test results between a system before and after patching ...

Without providing this then they will not agree to the change being made ... which means the system will have to remain unpatched and vulnerable.

    1. Be aware that TSM is quite expensive!
    2. If you go with TSM get decent training for it. I have worked with several systems which have been setup incorrectly because the person(s) setting up the TSM system had not had sufficient training in order to configure things properly.
    3. (Related to 2), make sure you know how to recover your TSM system in the event of a full DR, (not difficult if you know what you are doing but can beinteresting if you don't).

I would have to agree with this and the other reply to the post. If you have the money and the time to set it up properly then a 3584 teamed with TSM produces a very very good backup environment.

But make sure that you have it configured correctly and that you understand what it is doing. Also do not reply on vendor consultants to set it up for you as ... well ... in my experience we had three over time and we got refunds on two of them as they did not do anything and knew less about the products they were supposedly expert in than we did. Also knowing other people who are currently using TSM where it has been setup by the vendor it is not necessarily set up correctly (i was shocked at the configuration).

So its a great combo, but make sure you know what you are doing with it and are able to cope in a DR when you have lost your TSM server and onsite library and pools.

Theres lots of posts saying that you should place books in alphabetical order by author. I would disagree with this. For fiction books I group all the books by an author together and any individual books by other authors next to others within the same genre. The order of the Authors is fairly random in my main library but i do have several other bookcases around the house which contain the books by my favourite authors which i am likely to read regularly* Non-fiction gets sorted by subject and sub-subject, (e.g. web is seperated into css, html and php which leads onto mysql etc ...).

This means that I can off the top of my head locate any book to within 1 or 2 6 shelf bookcases which means it takes about 30 secs to find. I am cataloging, when i have time, using OpenDB but that is really so i can remember all of the authors i like and which books of theirs i have so i (a) don't buy duplicates and (b) know what names to look for.

    * for those people who are advocating reading books once and then getting rid of them or getting rid of books you havent read in the last 3 months .... are you insane? I reread books i have bought, its one nice thing about them not having any DRM .... I can reread them when i want in time spans over years without having to worry about how to access them. Some books actual improve the more times you read them as you pick up nuances which you may not have noticed the first time as you didn't know as much about the characters then.

The other nice thing with OpenDB is that once its set up it is very easy to use, even for non-technical people.

We never had any attempts to sabotage anything, mainly because the team got on well together and didn't want to screw over their friends but also because they were professionals.

Usual thing was on the last day, normally a Friday, everyone would go out down the pub at lunch time and the person leaving would not have to return and would struggle home under a pile of leaving gifts. As soon as they had left the office for the pub their accounts would be disabled and all administrative users they had access to would have their passwords changed.

  20. Support your staff ... on Best Way to Manage Geeks? · · Score: 1

... the best manager i've had was a techie and then was promoted up. This meant that he understood what was involved in the work we were doing and hence would make every attempt possible to prevent obviously unrealistic timescales or work getting through to us.

He also gave us a reasonable amount of freedom to be able to look at what we thought was best for the estate, subject to change control, as long as the things that had to be done were. He knew that if I was sitting at my desk and staring off into the distance i was noramlly :) thinking about something which would be relavent and may turn into a useful service improvement.

In fact over the yesrs we worked for him we cut the number of uncontrolled incidents coming in by a significant extent by putting measures in place to handle things more pro-actively and also stream lined the daily necessary grunt work so that it could be handles more easily and more accurately. We were looking after significantly more servers than the next largest Unix team in our company with a third of the staff and no where near the nunmber of incidents or callouts, (our record was 5 weeks on a 80 system estate with no callouts at all).

But don't get me wrong, you were expected to be able to demonstrate if asked that you were doing something relavent to your job and if something had to be done then he would make sure that you did do it. (Although if you were slacking off then the chances were you'd be chewed out by the rest of the team anyway).

Fortuantly you could also have standup rows with him and everything would return to normal within a short while. Unfortuantly he is no longer my manager, he took a job doing sometihng else in our company, but I still class him as a friend.

So I would say, be amanager to your staff and protect them from external forces where needed. Be flexible towards them but make sure that they arent abusing that and make sure they are doing everything that is expected of them. Do not coddle them with lots of perks and goodies but make sure they do have what they need in order to do their work in a reasonable manner.
