Technically its of course neat. But a generic white box is pretty uninteresting IMHO. Without the Apple logo I think most Apple users wouldn't look twice and just assume its a another LCD monitor. Of course Apple fans will just respond saying THAT'S THE POINT. Yeah well its boring.
In short its got no style. We have seen this lcd-all-in-one design before now its just happens to be a G5 inside. The previous Imac and things like the Cube were much more interesting. Maybe they'll offer Colored versions to spice it up? Too bad you can't buy the old version with a G5 in it.
The developers who put out GPL software are free to sell their software as well but most decide not to. Newsflash, most of them are NOT into OSS for the money and they put their software under the GPL fully well knowing that businesses would using there software to make money. If they have a problem with that they can go proprietary.
Secondly your going to complain about Red Hat making cash after all they've done for the community and all of the GPL OSS they've put out year after year? Do you have any idea how many developers and members or the community made a big chuck of cash from them when they went public? Gimme a fucking break. Bitch about SCO who continues to sell some OSS products despite their total lack of understanding of OSS. But not companies who actually give back and stand up for the ideals of OSS. What's next? If your in Florida and Black or a Democrat vote by absentee to make sure your vote counts. Any calls you get that the election day has changed or that they are trying to serve warrents at the voting booth are wrong.
Note that Republicans in Florida sent out a flier to some Miami-Dade Republicans that read "New electronic voting machines do not have a paper ballot to verify your vote in case of a recount. Make sure your vote counts, order your absentee ballot today."

Well how do you know that until you play the game? HL 1 was very immersive I can only guess that it will be that much better. In fact playing Doom 3 feels very much like HL1 story wise. And yes I know Doom 1 had the general idea first.
Regarding graphics its not D3 but it pretty darn good looking. http://media.pc.gamespy.com/media/492/49 2830/img_2 133273.html
The thing is D3 is all about cramped indoor environments. Hallways and Offices etc. HL2 looks to be much more in the vein of cityscapes and outdoor areas which after D3 will actually be VERY refreshing. Don't get me wrong I'm still enjoying being scared by D3(and yes headphones are the ONLY way to play!) but I'm kind of over the whole walk into dark room, have imp jump out at me. The formula while still fun gets really stale 2/3 in. And fuck are those half-baby half fly things annoying.
Anyway while Valve has really pissed me off with the delays I'm still very much looking forward to HL2. That and hitting people in the head with a crowbar. HL2 is looking to be pretty different from D3 and that's a good thing. My nerves couldn't take another creep and get scared jump fest.
Your lucky. ACPI is why Linux on the laptop is a no-go for most people. The bottom line is OEM's simply don't release enough info for hackers to work with. There is no standard ACPI implementation and the chances of getting speedstep, sleep, hibernation, and fan control working like it does in Windows is slim to none for most people. All of those features are working perfectly the first time you boot up XP without any fuss. The kludges I've seen just so networking or some other devices working after sleeping are just ugly to say the least. Its why I stopped running Linux on my laptop a long time ago.
Unfortunately I don't see the situation changing anytime soon which really sucks. For main desktop use Linux is a tough sell to many technical users because they are usually PC gamers as well. Give them a functional replacment for Windows on their laptop and you take away the "but I need games" arguement and offer something Free that works just as well for what most people need their laptops for. Ie office work, development, listening to music, surfing the web etc.
Oh please. This wasn't some op-ed that a/. editor wrote. They are picking up on a story that even pro-MS zdnet had already published. I didn't see/. blaming MS, I saw an article from another source which is in fact an interesting read.
I'm sorry but this is a load of shit and if that's really your work ethic your pathetic. And No your BS isn't the "truth". In life you have choices. Any like the rest of us you can choose to work for a company that doesn't treat you like complete shit.
Cheating and slacking off at a job you don't like isn't the answer. Picking a profession you enjoy and moving to another job is. I pity the company that gets you as an employee. Everyone else is going to have to pick up your slack while you just make life harder for them. Sounds to me like your the one making the work environment shitty for everyone, not the employer. Move on to another job already.

Because the average person who works 9 to 5 and finally settles into tv watching from say 7:30 to 10pm is seeing pretty much nothing but Swiming and Gymnastics. Prime Time Olympic coverage has pretty much sucked ass. I mean how much swimming and gymnastics can the average adult male watch? Sure rarely we've gotten to see other sports in prime time but for the most part its been nothing but the two sports listed above. The parent is right, going by what most people are seeing at night you'd think there are only like 3 sports in the Olympics. Oh and Bob Costas is realy annoying.
You can list all the program guides you like, it won't change the fact that US audiences are getting royally screwed by the coverage.
The main content gets a small amount on space in the middle on the page but on the top, left, right, and bottom your competely surrounded by ads. In short they are getting the exact opposite effect of zero eyes when if they just had say one ad in the middle of the content people might actually pay attention. I mean banner ads in 2004? Who TF has looked at one of them since the mid 90's? Lastly those "keyword" ads are just horrible. At work I use IE and it makes those sites even more annoying. Popup bubbles on mouseover's for like every other word gets to you after a while. Thank God for Firefox.
If you think that Nader doesn't really matter than you must have not paid attention to the last election. Without Nader A) GWB might have actually won the election legally and in the clear or B) Al Gore would have clearly won and the world would be a much different place. So yes IMHO Nader does matter. Why do you think Republicans are scrambling so hard and spending so much money in order to get Nader on the ticket in so many states? Oh right, they believe in the Democractic process. That and he doesn't matter of course.
We are not talking about informal bs'ing or the fact that people pronounce things differently. We are talking about a proper place, ie the Internet. But any half decent publishing house or reporter with any respect for formality or actual literary standards will continue to call it the Internet.

Too bad that the majority of gamers are not in the position to do anything like that. I mean how likely is it that everyone has $350 to blow on a gpu? Not bloody likely is the reality. At that price and above your talking about a small percentage of gamers. The rest as always will be sticking with way sub $200 cards where gpu vendors continue to make their bread and butter.

Just some quick points. While 802.11b is faster than most people's high speed connection that's not true for all. Cable Providers like Optimum Online( a decent size provider in the NJ/NY area) and others give about 10Mb and sometime higher connections. My Orinoco gold card tops out at like 440KB a sec which didn't come near my Internet top speed. So that's not really true in all cases. Secondly if you like many people do have a home network 802.11g makes a huge difference. Transferring large files via 802.11b is painful to say the least.
Should people preorder this from Belkin? I think not just yet. But for anyone on a home network or lucky enough to live where they give out fast net connection 802.11g is well worth the investment. You did specifially say "but only use it to surf the Internet." so in that case your are pretty much right on I just wanted to point out a few reasons why 802.11g isn't so bad an idea.
I have kerio running and accessed the net fine with XP's new firewall on. You might run into the situation where your personal firewall had rules which allowed incoming connections which no longer works if you have MS's firewall on. But you should be able to access the Internet fine with SP2's Firewall and a 3rd party Firewall both running.
Um no. Its cleary a broken window complete with cracks and holes. Perhaps you are the one who needs to have your glasses checked? On the topic at hand I see no reason to change it. Since when has Slashdot been considered a "professional" website? Popular yes. Professional? No.
Hate to destroy your entire argument with one word but here it is. Backup.
No RAID 0 isn't stupid. People who run RAID 0 but don't backup are stupid. People who run a single drive but don't backup are stupid (I guess that means 90% of home users stupid then). Finally simply owning two hard drives doesn't exactly double your likelyhood of having one of them fail.
For people who backup and want a boost in speed and a more responsive system I suggest checking out RAID 0. Those of you using a single drive thinking RAID 0 is risky yet don't do full backups can relax knowing that if your single drive fails you'll be just as screwed. Congrats.
Sorry but Yenc is a standard feature that pretty much every newsreader has these days. Pan, Xnews, Dialog, Agent all have yenc, why doesn't Thunderbird. Oh right...warez...*cough*....yea great reason.
Anyway the parent is right. Thunderbird makes a lousy newsreader and its filtering capabilities downright stink. I know they are currently targeting the home user who does nothing but send and receive email but it really needs to offer more if its ever going to become popular among business users and especially technical users. Its just lacking way to many features. There are no better browser products then Firefox and Mozilla but Thunderbird comes in way behind Evolution on Linux and Outlook on Windows. Maybe its just destined to be a secure alternative for OE users to migrate to, and in that respect it suceeds. But this isn't 1998 and many want more from a Email/News client.
Companies went with 2.4GHz so they could sell the same products to people again. Although the latest 2.4 phones are probably ok for years 2.4GHz phones had shit reception compared to their 900MHz predecessors.
