Anyway on your rig that seems to be par for the course although I've seen some people say that 800x600 at medium is playable with that spec. You honestly probably won't see that big a hit playing a notch higher resolution wise. On my system once I'm in a room its not too bad but running through doorways causes a huge bit a chop and when any big action scene starts it chops a little as well. After playing with this setup for so long its really is surprising that I'm playing at 640x480 low. I think the last time I played a fps at such a low resolution was like 5 years ago. :)

One thing you can try is setting setting image_cacheMegs "32" to "96" or higher in the file DoomConfig.cfg. Some people are reporting that is helping smooth things out. YMMV

Gnome users used to constantly bash KDE because they "forced" users to use basically only one WM if they wanted the best experience. Why are they taking away our choice of WM used to be the rallying cry. There also used to be tons of threads about how Gnome was more customizeable because of the themeing you could do. In short Gnome was the desktop which upheld the FOSS philosophy of choice while KDE was the one sticking it to its users by offering less ways to setup your desktop. Actually for many older console systems you do get perfect sound and picture. Have you looked into Emulated gaming recently? There are a ton of really good emu's out there and even the oldest systems have new emulators coded for them now and then.

Plus with Emulation you don't have to keep 20 consoles around cluttering up your livingroom. The cartridges don't have to be cleaned, you won't wear the parts out, and you don't have to spend huge amount of money on games. I say this as someone who grew up with Atari, NES etc and I own a bunch of console systems and I won't be getting rid of any time soon. IMO Emulation is simply more practical and a better solution. Remember, its the games and gaming that matter, not the screws, chips, and solder that are holding the systems together. The games need to survive, the actual hardware which will become rarer and rarer and more likely to stop working doesn't.

Let's be fair here. How many Gnome/GTK apps have their own File dialogs? Regardless or Gnome's HIG's, KDE's apps all tend to look and act like they were designed for one another. This is opposed to many of the marquee what I call "adopted" Gnome apps that don't integrate well with Gnome at all. Compare that with how Konq, Koffice, on Kontact work within KDE. KDE does in fact have more options, or what your calling "clutter" but overall its still more consistant then Gnome although that's finally started to change. Gnome also has the habit of making major interface changes between versions. Dialog boxes have been switched around and now the most fudemental way in which you interact with your OS ie file browsing has been turned on its head with Spatial. No warnings, no this is optional in 2.6 but will be switched on in 2.8 etc. KDE on the other hand has stayed consistant in the basic ways that matter for years now. The HIG's the Gnome devs go by are nice but they aren't some magic beans which have fixed all of Gnome's issues.
