Yes that is a big concern for people who really like RTCW. Basically the one downfall to this is its going to splinter the RTCW community between old and new. Personally I like the old version. I'll possibly grow to enjoy the new one, but to me it just seemed like they saw features from other WWII sims and then copied them a bit. I really hope they fixed things like how weak the gunfire sounds and especially the voice chats(yuck).
Anyway I don't see how you can possibly complain about a game given away for free(unless your taxes paid for it;) ) but I'm not so ready to embrace this and move on from the orginal.
"All I want to know is, who's idea was it - Microsoft's?;)"
I know your joking, but once a company lies to the court, fakes videos in court, and has dead people sending letters to the Attorney General of Utah, can you trust them not to do anything that's illegal?
Microsoft has proven without a doubt they are one of the most immoral, corrupt, and untrustworthy companies in the world. After their trackrecord of lies and illegal acts it really couldn't be a surprise to anyone that Microsoft was behind this whole thing.
"Also, how is this different from any automated Linux update method? Software has bugs. Patches may have bugs. Regardless of vendor, patches are not perfect and may induce problems."
How is this different? How about the fact that this happens/happened constantly with MS patches and rarely with opensource patches. MS patches have historically needed more patches because they didn't fix the problems the first time, and they also break things more than they should
That's not to say there has never been a bad patch in the opensoure world, it just that MS is known for their inability to put out good quality patches.
You'd think with all those PC's running Windows in Remond that they'd catch stuff like this before they released it to the public.
"Agree or disagree with me, when you think about it without bias it's true."
No bias, MS sucks at patching. Especially when you consider they not only ship fewer apps(on the order of hundreds less compared to a linux distro) with Windows, but they also have 40 billion in cash lying around.
"The escalating bandwidth costs associated with file sharing are not sending ISPs into the red, but the companies are anxious to bring the amounts under control."
People are actually using the bandwidth that they paid for and now its a problem?
You see the ISP's want you to be good little consumers and treat internet access like cable tv and not upload anything and avoid actually participating in the internet. F** them. I paid for my "unlimited" access and I'll dam well use it. P2P IS the killer app and in of itself is a completely legal service. If some users trade "illegal" files on it, it doesn't mean its time to shut it down. If that was the case then all web servers, search engines, usenet, ftp servers, and the entire Internet itself should be shut down.
If this traffic is taking up too much of their network its time to do the unthinkable and actually invest more money in upgrading to handle the demand. Any other solution is the wrong one. Outlawing a specific service just because you company didn't plan for it is about as bad as business planning gets. Evolve. (Oh that's right I forgot the telecom sector doesn't need any growth right now)
For an example my ISP (Optimum Online) has declared Kazaa or ANY file sharing service illegal. So are servers and anything else which isn't just regular downloading. If heaven forbid you actually are running a "server" or file sharing service they will cap you at 10kb upload. Great then why did they give me a 1Mb upload capacity? Evolve you a**sholes and stop trying to hold back progress!
They have cleary stated that Red Hat is one of the companies infringing on their IP. If I was in charge over at Red Hat I'd being suing them right now for libel and slander. They are in effect try to destroy the reputation of Red Hat through flase claims that are in all likelyhood causing Red Hat to lose business.
You simply can't issue press release after press release slandering a company legally.
Either Red Hat thinks this will all blow over or they are really guilty along with everyone else. Sitting on the sidelines is stupid IMO and the longer these SCO claims are out there the more credence they will accumulate.
Its not time for SCO to shit or get off the pot, its time for linux vendors and service providers to go on the offense and sue the crap out of SCO for the damage this is causing. That or face the music for the infringing IP.
"It is perfectly reasonable to expect only 20 mbps throughput with a 802.11a or 11g network, for the same reason that 4-5 mbps is average using a 10baset hub or 802.11b. These are all shared mediums"
So then call it 20mbps for 802.11g or 5mbps for 802.11b. Calling it 11mbps is a scam since you can NEVER reach that speed. I mean with wired ethernet at least you come close to the spec, with wireless you don't even get half. Saying its a shared medium is a cop out. Myself and many other home users are only using one client per AP, saying its less than half its advertised speed because of contention doesn't cut it.
If I sold a car that got "up to" 80mpg but really only got 30mpg in practice it would not be legal to say so. That's what the wireless industry gets away with.
I personally don't care that my AP doesn't reach the rated speed, I knew that long before I bought it. But it doesn't excuse the industry from coming up way short on their claimed speeds. 5Mbps isn't 11Mbps and that won't ever change.
"So high-fidelity nuts pay Microsoft's subscription fee. That's the same kind of people who get suckered out of thousands of dollars for special amplifiers, extra-thick copper wiring, or odd speakers."
Hey screw you buddy, my $5,000 per foot pure silver cable has much greater depth and accuracy then you crappy regular 14 gauge cable.;)
If your not familiar with the nuts in the "high" end audio scene feel free to fire up any newsreader and subscribe to some of the audio groups. It can be quite amusing.
"Microsoft seems sure that consumers will find renting music more desirable than owning it. Personally, I think they're crazy"
"Don't think like an audiophile, think like the average person.;) Seriously, how often do most people listen to albums they bought as little as 5 years ago? Most music is bought by young people and it's flavor of the month. How many people who bought "Baby One More Time" still listen to it?"
Honestly I think your the one not thinking like an average person. The "average" person thinks when they pay money for music that they get to own it now and forever. That's not being an audiophile, that's just having common sense. Audiophile's will say screw MS and DRM and average people once they understand that they need to pay monthly forever to actually own a song will pass.
"Sort of the same thing that's been haunting Firebird/Phoenix."
I've never had a problem with Flash on either Linux or Windows in the last year in which I've been using various builds of Mozilla/Phoenix full time.
If you can't get it to work stop by Mozillazine.
"why are there so many problems with these fringe browsers and Flash?"
I dunno maybe Flash just sucks? Why don't you ask why so many websites are shoving useless Flash animations down our throats? I end up killing Flash on 99% of websites I visit because it ends up just getting in the way.
They don't allow you to modify the code and then redistribute their distro. This isn't about their lack of ISO's, this is about freedom which Suse drastically limits. I simply won't supports companies like that..
I know most people could give a crap, but I'm not one of them.
I didn't see where the size was listed, but after looking at these I have to question when do PDA's become subnotebooks? Or maybe its just the form factor thats throwing me off.
Mozilla has 99% of the features most people want either by default or through extensions all it takes is a little research or a quick question at the Mozillazine forums. Its too bad more people don't realize that.
Also for future reference. http://texturizer.net/firebird/index.h tml
Not to Troll but IE users are the ones to worry about. Opera and Konq users probably make up like.025% of web users. Its not even worth working on Safari(I guess Konq) users, Apple only makes up like 4% of computer users.
Work on IE users, they are the ones that make up 95% of the Net. If Mozilla is to ever make any impact(doubtful without desktop bundling) than you need to beat Redmonites first.
I don't have to do any of that. Like always I just copy NPSWF32.dll to my plugins folder and off I go. Every Flash site I visit works fine. The very first time you install flash you may have to manually point out the plugins directory but thats it AFAIK.
I've been using Mozilla/Phoeinx/Firebird for well over a year and I've never had to do any registry editing.
I think you can also use this site as well to make Flash installation easier.

Yes but can you make linux lock you out of your computer because you haven't activated it yet?
Saying you can do X task with Windows is missing the point. The bottom for most linux users is they get to avoid having to use Windows in the first place.
Isn't the security aspect, its the fact that MS hasn't gotten patching down yet. Patches from Microsoft CONSTANTLY slow down and screw up peoples computers. Every time you download a patch its like playing russian roulette.
I just experienced this two days ago. My friend had me reinstall XP on his laptop so I started with a disc that had XP SP1 included. Now considering the huge list of known problems SP1 causes both he and myself were happy with how the system preformed after install. It seemed snappy and worked well. But then after I ran windows update and pulled down like 15 security updates, boom instant slowdown. I'd say its about 15-20% slower now. I might as well have pulled out his PIII900 and dropped in a PIII600. (And yes I specifically avoided 811493)
When will MS stop having to reissue patches and stop slowing down and screwing up systems because they can't figure out how to make software with some decent security built in? I mean screw the security track record of other OS's, Microsoft is the one with 40 billion in the bank. They are also the ones who still don't get it and are just now telling their programmers that security needs to be considered when designing software. For about the fact that OSS exists, I still can't believe people can people can have faith in a company like that.

On a different topic but related to Corporate consolidation, I think we should just do away with our current government and let the country be run by mega coporations. You see the way it would work is whoever paid the most money gets the most power and favor with government. So if you wanted to expand your company so that it owned every media outlet in a particular area you could just dump money until your able to do what you want. You'd be able to set up monopolies in whatever industry you wanted, be it Cable, Telecom, or hell even the software industry if you wanted. The "President" and "Vice President" really wouldn't be politicians, they would businessmen with strong ties to big corporations and they would give favor to their former companies once they got in power. Yea most games are for Windows, so what? The parent said under linux Nvidia kicks ATI's ass. This of course is true and has been for a while now. For people considering a video card for linux this is a fairly important piece of information.
So obviously for those of us who do game under linux drivers ARE an issue. So what was your point besides trolling?
Mplayer with the Mplayer plugin usually does a pretty decent job with that. Maybe its not 100%, but when the big two web media companies(Microsoft, Apple) are trying to block you from entering their markets its not always a trival task.
