  1. Transgaming on Transgaming's WineX 2.1 - Supports WarCraft 3 · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think transgaming is pretty sleasy. Originally, they promised to release the source as soon as they got 15,000 subscribers. They claimed to release it under a license "similar to the wine license." Now this is nowhere to be seen. I signed up because I thought their business model was an interesting idea, the "Street performers protocol." Now they seem to have renigged on this, after taking many peoples money under false pretenses.

If they can't release the code under the LGPL, how would they ever release it under a wine license? These guys are just crooks.

Remember that Attack of the Clones was done with digital cameras. Traditionally, internally lit models are "overexposed" to make the internal lights brighter. Since there's no film to over expose in digital, ILM had to ramp up the lights so much some models caught on fire.

ILM is trying to push the envelope and get some great technologies ready (by using some that aren't quite ready now like digital cameras), so I don't fault them too much for not using models for a lot of things.

Also, for not internally lit objects, ILM used a significant number of models, probably more than LotR, since LotR could mostly be shot on location.

Strategy. Free Software needs a 3d modeler. With Maya seats costing 3k, and the massive amount of money in the Effects Industry, a Free Software solution could gain significant momentum. Projects like Film Gimp have benefitted from programmers under the payroll of such effects houses as Rhythm and Hues, and ILM has been interested in helping with development.

Effect houses create a lot of great software which is used in house only, providing them with a base like blender under the GPL will intice them to use those programmers for projects which are released to the public and thus helping everyone.

If 2.5 million dollars was put into a project, and we can buy it for 100k, and we can make it Free Software, why start from scratch?

All Blizzard has to do is make all its new games use REAL encryption and worse come to worse hard code the servers by IP or domain (yes with some work domains could be faked but most users will not do this). If they use some sort of real encryption, then their games will most likely not be usable without some sort of patching, and if bnetd released a patch of some kind to a blizzard game, I'm sure legally they could put a stop to it.

What this is really about is Warcraft III beta, they didn't think people would use Bnetd to use pirated versions of it, and so now they are trying to kill bnetd until Warcraft III comes out. After that don't expect them to make that mistake with DIII or whatever their next game is. There will be encryption.

Of course you can be a Christian without the Bible. All you have to believe in is the divinity of Christ and you are a christian. The New Testament(the Christ part) was created from vast array of documents all of which could have been included. The Catholic Church decided what and what was not to be included in the official bible with somewhat dubious logic (look it up some of it has to do with Jesse Jackson type numerical logic). So the documents which were included can be rejected individually without collapsing belief in the whole. The New Testament is not the word of god, and is never claimed to be. Rather it is a "historical" description of what happened, written decades after the events happened.

This really shows Transgaming's position in the free software / open source worlds. I am a subscriber to Transgaming and have since because of their attitude canceled my subscription. I subscribed because they had an interesting business model and I supported it. When the subscriber base of transgaming reached a certain point (apparently non declared [it used to be on their site some where but I bet they renigged]) then they will release it under a less restrictive license "such as the wine license." I finally read that part over again and noticed that it doesn't actually say anything about what license it will be under, and exactly how less restrictive it will be. The fact that they are negotiating to allow simple trivial things back in to the code base that they have been leeching from for years (such as middle mouse support in DirectX) shows they had no intention of remerging the codebase under the wine license. I can almost guarantee that they will never release their modifications under the wine license now, but rather under some non GPL compatible license.

"MOST is a unique and exciting space astronomy mission involving Canadian government, scientists and industry," said Mr. Barry Wetter, Director General of the CSA's Space Science Branch. "The signing of this launch agreement with Eurockot is a major step toward seeing this project to fruition."

The MOST project uses innovative Canadian technology to enable a cost-effective space science mission involving a small telescope no bigger in diameter than a pie plate, carried on a microsatellite about the size of a small suitcase. The total weight is only 60 kilograms. The telescope will help set a limit on the age of the Universe and probe the properties of planets around other stars.

Funded and managed by the CSA's Space Science Branch under its Small Payloads Program, the MOST project is a co-operative Canadian scientific partnership. Dynacon Enterprises Limited of Mississauga, Ontario, is the prime contractor. The telescope is being developed by the University of British Columbia (UBC) while the satellite is being assembled at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS). Other key partners include the Centre for Research in Earth and Space Technology (CRESTech) of Toronto, Spectral Applied Research of Concord, Ontario, the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation (AMSAT) and the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC).The Principal Investigator, Prof. Jaymie Matthews of UBC, leads a team of scientists from across Canada, the United States and Austria.

The Canadian Space Agency is providing $8.5 million to fund the development of the satellite and ground control station, the launch and operations. An additional $1.2 million in support to UTIAS was provided by the Ontario government through its Ontario Research and Development Challenge Fund.
