  1. My experience voting yesterday in Mississippi on Touch-Screen Voting Snags Continue · · Score: 2, Informative

There were two big problems with the new machines yesterday here in Mississippi.

    1. The lines were very, very long... Now... we did have record turnout yesterday. But, not in the fashion that would cause 2 to 3 hour waits to vote. I was perfectly happy to wait an hour to vote, until I saw what I assumed the reason was that I was waiting. When I got to the front of the line, I saw that most people were standing at the machines for more than 5 minutes each. There's no way the old process would have taken that long. Of course, in my district, and at the time I went yesterday, most of them were older... but IT'S A TOUCH SCREEN WHERE YOU TOUCH A CANDIDATES NAME!!! I think (and saw) many people turn away from voting because of this wait.

    2. I finally made it to a machine. First vote... (don't hate me for it if you don't like him) I clicked on Haley Barbour... his name did not check... instead, a democrat on the other corner of the screen checked. I clicked his name to remove it... Clicked Barbour again... same problem. This happened with about 6 candidates on the first screen. Finally, I was so frustrated that I had to call someone to help (which is bad because of privacy). She said that it had been happening a lot today and was supposed to be fixed. Then, she showed me how to "RUB" the machine so that the candidates would highlight (which worked most of the time, not all). I almost had to vote for a candidate in an uncontested race that I didn't want to. I said, "I don't want to vote for him." A vote helper person said, "He's going to win anyway."

    Total time voting... 10 minutes.

Do the touch screens work? Not at this time.

Of course, the fact is. Slashdot or the submitter didn't make this story up. I'm sure you read the summary where it mentioned that this is a New York Times story. Although the NYT is not neccessarily a favorite of mine, it is what most would consider a "News Source," which technically makes this "News," which cannot make this trolling.

I actually came here last night wondering where this story was... I was thinking "a story on our favorite search engine and our arch enemy not being covered on SlashDot? What's wrong here?"

So... if they hadn't done the story, they'd be complained about, and apparently, for doing the story, they're complained about.

Since there's no way that they can win... and since slashdotters always seem to mod up complainers, I say that they er on the side of calling a story that is not an editorial in the New York Times a news-worthy story... wouldn't you agree?

I don't want slashdot to censor my news for me...

  3. Do we really believe in personal responsibility? on Highway Shooters Claim To Emulate GTA · · Score: 2, Informative

Ok... let's be frank. I believe in Personal responsibility. If I do something dumb, I'm supposed to pay. I believe that if I smoke, I get cancer, I died, I asked for it... but let's assume for a minute that the companies should live under the same rule.

For smoking, this means the following. The fabric industry is the cause of a very small amount of publicly spent medical costs per year. The smoking industry is (indirectly) the cause of the majority of medical expenses per year. However, both the fabric and smoking industries pay the same amount of taxes (at least before the suits). Is this responsible? I'm not sure where I fall on this because I'm still trying to figure out my stance.

On an individual level. Say, I never work out, so I'm fat. I get so fat that I can't work, so I live on welfare. And I completely live off of the guy who takes care of himself and works hard. Is this responsible?

I think I've decided that the smoking industry is the fat guy who doesn't work. I think the same thing about the piece of the porn industry that the justice dept is sueing right now. And truthfully, I think the same thing about Rockstar.

Nintendo and Super Mario cause very little aggression. The one guy's post about mario inspiring violence was marked funny because you never hear about someone killing someone else with a hammer they can't keep from bouncing and playing a tune. However, this is not the first violent act performed because of (at least) some relationship to video games. It's very difficult to argue that these things have absolutely no effect on you. If you see violence all of the time, it's difficult to argue that it has no effect. If you take part in violence all of the time (real or unreal), it's difficult to argue that it has little effect.

All that being said, Rockstar and Nintendo pay the same amount and are recognized as equals. Is that responsible?

That you WILL work late and unreasonable hours (and weekends).

This is pretty much just a heads-up to anyone who owns or runs a development company.

I went to interview at a company in New Orleans several years ago. They were very proud to show me their beautiful gameroom with ping-pong, pool, several card games and a couple of arcade games. Right when I walked into the room I knew for a fact that I would be turning that job down.

A company that feels the need to boost moral by installing a game room or something similar is a company that expects you to be there night and day, day and night. They realize that your being there all of the time with nothing to take agression, etc out with will be bad for moral and make you constantly consider quitting.

Take these two situations. Two companies expect you to work 60 - 80 hours a week. One has a game room, one does not. The one with the gameroom typically also has a looser environment and lighter dress code. Their employees are much happier than those at the company with no game options... but, they are still OVERWORKED!

No thanks... I took company number three that expects you to put in 40 hours (+- 5) per week. They're out there... they're all over the place as a matter of fact. And... none of them have game rooms. Their employees are happier because they have time outside of work to fulfill themselves... not because they can play the latest shoot 'em up on their 5th break of the day at 9 at night.

I think we're spending too much time talking about what games girls like rather than addressing the issue of whether or not girls do play games in general.
My wife had never played a single computer game before we were married. She showed no desire after we were married until she saw me playing several games. Then she started playing games like Zeus or Majesty (puzzle/strategy games). She liked boggle and bejeweled as well.
Then... she saw me play some real games. She's not great, really, but has learned to love to play UT, Q3, Tony Hawk, Aggressive Inline, Mario, Twisted Metal:Black, GTA3, SSX, etc. She wasn't brought up having the expectation that she would like games so she didn't... and then, only liked girl-type games at first.
I notice the same thing with my daughters. I play games... their mom plays games... naturally, they want to play games. They love mario cart, mario party, a whole slew of barbie crud, SSX, and Tony Hawk PS3 (we turn off some songs though). Other than the barbie games... these are typically boy-liked games as well.
Sure, girls will be attracted to games with more puzzle or realistic situations as people have pointed out already in this thread... but more time should be spent by developers trying to turn girls on to gaming... not creating games they think girls will like.

What if I said... pyrrho is dead? Does that make you dead? Surely not. pyrrho (which I'm guessing is not your real name) was established by more than my mere words. You exist because of parents, because of others experiences with you, etc.

Neitzche has been called genious, insane, filled with hate, etc. etc. etc. Regardless of his qualifications, he was a man that truly hated both the Christian faith and the Christian religion ("...It has been almost the terror of terrors and out of that terror the contrary type has been willed, cultivated and attained: the domestic animal, the herd animal, the sick brute-man--the Christian." - Neitzche), and since the Christian faith did not establish the existance of God, rather the godhood (if that is a word) of Jesus, his distrust certainly did not limit itself to Christianity, but to, I imagine, the Abramic religions, and for that matter, religion in general.

Anyway, whether genius or insane, the man truly had phsycological, theological and emotional issues with Christianity. So... it's his word against the thousands of years of writings, experiences, etc. that have established both the God of the Abramic religions and specifically the God of Christianity.

All I'm saying is that I would hardly trust him, you, or any other philosopher, scholar, doctor, computer programmer, garbage man, or other, to declare whether God is dead or not, while His existance in both the past, present, and future (however real you claim it to be) cannot be sufficiently debunked.

I took this as somewhat of a wise-crack towards religion... if not... sorry, I misunderstood. God is a being that exists outside of our need or usage of Him. One may perceive Him as being alive based on our apparent need or lack thereof, but that's an assuming belief on that perceivers part. Ancient Greek religion had the idea that if you stopped following a god, that god may cease to exist, but that's not the case with the God that Neitzche thought himself to be referring to.

In the same way, tape and disk are ideas that represent physical devices. Obviously, just because we don't need or use them, doesn't mean that the device or idea ceases to exist...

OS/2 the same way. The thousands/millions of disks still exist regardless of whether people use them. It is no more (physically) dead or alive based on it's usage... it is just perceived to be.

In short... just because we declare something dead, doesn't mean it is.
