  1. Too complaicated priceing plan on Real Launches Music Download Service · · Score: 4, Insightful

This is a way too complicated of a pricing plan for a basic home user.

There are simply way to many rules with this plan as stated. I pay a monthly fee, so I should be able to use any song right? No, I have to pay for each song [after the trial]. So why am I paying a monthly fee? Then I get the song, and realize I can use it but for my computer?

You try selling that to the guy on the street.

That's why the Apple plan works. $.99 a song. We'll give you a discount if you buy a full album (for most CDs). No monthly fee. Burn, iPod, play your songs you got. There are some restrictions, but transparent to the average user. That's easier to sell to the guy on the street.

  2. What kind of chance? on John Woo Establishes Game Studio With Sega · · Score: 3, Informative

"What kind of chance does a film-maker have of making a difference in videogames, now films are becoming more game-like and games are becoming more film-like?"

I know this seems like a shameless promotion since it comes out tomorrow, but the answer to that question will be answered with "Enter the Matrix."

This is a very rare project where film directors are in the director's chair for a video game. This is revolutionary mainly because it breaks taboos in Hollywood about video games.

A few weeks ago, Emerson College in Boston held their 'Web Night' panel discussion which included Randy Fenton, the founder of Dare to Play (DtP). DtP is a tool to create a non-liner narrative structure using a hotmail-like account to interact with characters. The intent is for branding for movies where audiences experience a sort of prequel to a movie (as well as some Edutainment applications).

The common problem he has faced is being labeled as a game. For example, DtP was featured under the Sundance Interactive Festival, but only by a hair. The board was at a fight between calling DtP a game or not. Sundance Interactive do not want to incorporate 'games' into the festival, but how can an interactive project not be constructed as a game? Under this logic, titles like 'Myst' or 'The Longest Journey' do not have narrative merit. This is the challenge between the movie and gaming industries.

Hollywood thinks all video games are variations of Pong.

There are a lot of reasons and theories as to why, from union issues to change in audience positioning. But now, special effects work is very similar to video game creation, especially with motion-capture and human scanning practices. The film industry is already making mini-videogames as non-interactive movies for a few years now. Something needs to point out this fact to the industry.

I believe the Wachowski brothers will make that point with The Matrix. The principal photography of the new series of The Matrix was of 3 main units, "Matrix: Revolutions," "Matrix: Reloaded," and "Enter the Matrix." Film people made a video game. The game may or may not be revolutionary for the audience (out side of the plot's involvement with the movie), but it will be for the process of creating a video game.

It shall be exciting to see what happens next...

Are there any KVM switch solutions that incorperate DVI natively?

The only thing that put me off on getting a flat screen (Outside of price) is trying to KVM a Dell Inspiron 8100 portable (VGA only :[ ) and Gigabyte Ethernet class G4 (ADC & VGA). I know I need to get the ADC-to-DVI converter for the G4, and I would be getting the most native DVI visuals from either the G4 and espically the Dell, but if I can edge out something better than VGA on the G4, it's worth the trouble. 12. What do you call a New Media degree in 20 years? on An Interesting Look at the Video Game Industry · · Score: 3, Informative

I recently transfered in to Emerson College in Boston, doing away with a double major in Design/Technical Theatre & Cable/TV Broadcasting at Western Michigan University. Upon starting at Emerson, I found out about a BFA program where a student can partake in a feature-length project in film, tv/video, radio, and new media. Long story short, I changed majors from a BA in Film to peruse BFA in New Media.

Personally, I think 'New Media' should be renamed 'Interactive Media.' With internet, with video games, it's a form of media that the audience interacts with. With 'New Media,' what happens in 20 or 10 years? Is it still new? And what happens when HTML goes the way of BetaMax? What does knowing HTML do for you then?

I use the class curriculum as a springboard for my own education. The classes provide the foundation, I complete the rest of the picture with my thesis project. What I hope to create is an education where I can understand how an audience interacts with the media I create. Programing languages and media delivery systems will come and go, but what I hope to keep is how best to allow my audience to interact with my artwork. HTML, Flash, Director, et all are tools for a user to interact with content. I'm trying to keep in check that the tools will change and improve, but the fundamentals of audience interaction are still in play.

I believe the root of this question lays in a general education requirements that a number of colleges/universities.

Lets say a university wants to employ a basic computing skills class for the general education requirements. So, you make a CS101 class. But, how do you create a lesson plan for this class? How do you teach word processing on a computer that's inexpensive from installation to support? Not to mention having the attempt for the class material to be applicable in the lives of the student.

As much as I would like to see a more competitive/open environment, the open source products of word processing and operating systems in general are not at that level yet, and certainly not in the past 10+ years. The only real player has been Microsoft with Corel/WordPerfect in a very distant 2nd.

At this point in time it makes economical and educational sense to go with MS products. However, this could change if a number of things happen, which I personally would like to see.

  19. The idea in a nutshell on More on GM's New Fuel Cell Cars · · Score: 5, Insightful

This isn't anything new. GM announced this at the North American International Auto Show in January.

Anyways, the idea is for a fuel cell car that can be easily produced and not put UAW workers out of a job. You have one plant making the core part of the car (the bottom part with wheels and all points in-between to make the car move). Other plants build the top part of the car (one makes SUVs another makes luxuary lines...). and plug the top part into the same base.

Now this 'plug-in' idea is not meant for the consumer to detach different car bodies at home, but it makes production cheaper since you're building the same engine.

I for one am glad that there seems to be one new idea coming out of Warren, MI.

    To further your good points..

Has anyone actually seen the IMAX camera? It's a very large and heavy camera where each roll occupies about 2.5 minutes of film.

I always wondered if there is a digital form of the IMAX camera in development. It certainly would be more manageable than the film version. Reload would be a matter of switching a hard drive, rather than feeding film. The amount of record time would most likely be similar to the film version, but at least the camera would have less downtime to change the hard drive.

And don't get me started on a digital IMAX projector... ;)

Then again, I don't claim to know what the other problems there may be with a digital version. I just hope that the idea is at least being worked on.
