"then label those who do not believe in it." I do not accept your premise that "I" construct this world.
Convince me.
First of all, it existed long before my birth. Second, Muslims, Christians and Jews believe that the notion of such a world comes from God via Prophets, who have connection with Him.
How do you know this if it can't be observed? sounds to me like you just made it up... or someone just made it up and you've decided to believe it for some reason.
"they disagree with your supernatural world." I know that, I am just saying that the basis of their disagreement is not scientific.
I have an invisible yellow unicorn who tapdances and sings show tunes in my garage. Do you believe me? If not, why not?
"If something can be observed there is no reason for belief." I just gave you very reason: religion helps a believer to lead happy life and frees him from anxiety.
So...heroin then? Fine and dandy is it? Sure frees junkies from anxiety. How about people who think they're Napoleon? Makes them happy you see. Why spoil it? Does that mean he is actually Napoleon then?
"Especially when the asking is done at the point of a sword." Muslims do not do that. Qur'an: 2:256:
Uh, yeah, right. rolls eyes... Care to discuss Sura 4:89 (seize them and slay them wherever you find them: and in any case take no friends or helpers from their ranks." ) or Quran 8:12 (I shall cast terror into the hearts of the infidels. Strike off their heads, strike off the very tips of their fingers.) or Quran 9:123 (Believers, make war on the infidels who dwell around you. Deal firmly with them. Know that God is with the righteous.) or Qur'an:8:65 (O Prophet, urge the faithful to fight. If there are twenty among you with determination they will vanquish two hundred; if there are a hundred then they will slaughter a thousand unbelievers, for the infidels are a people devoid of understanding.) etc etc etc? And remind me what is the punishment in Islam for apostacy?
Not picking on Islam, as all the delusional sky cake people do/have done the same thing throughout history (hello, crusades anyone?), but that's what you chose to talk about so I'm in.
Look, believe in your sky faerie, you just don't get to demand anyone else do so too. You venerate a book of riddles dictated by an illiterate pedarast all you want. Fine. Don't ask me to do it too and I won't threaten to cut off your head for not accepting carbon dating. Deal?
You want good teachers? Fucking pay them. Not the text book companies or all the other leeches.. Pay the fucking teachers.
Yes!!! Can't agree more. Everybody bitches about this stuff, then turns around and blames the teachers, which is total horseshit. Shows where the priorities lie when the people given the task of educating or healing the populace get such shitty wages. Teachers and nurses always get shafted.
Putting arms in the hands of the good guys does not turn them into trigger happy nutjobs that kill random innocent people at the slightest provocation.
and a subset will tell you that was all about Chernobyl... although what they won't tell you is that if it's foretold in some book, why didn't they, y'know, tell anyone until afterwards hmmmm? Save a few lives, stop a disaster. These are the same people who see Willy Nelson's face in their toast in the morning. Stupid doesn't begin to describe it.
I flew 7000 miles to go see Les Paul play at the Iridium.
He didn't show that one night though and the guys at the next table were bitching because they'd come all the way in from Long Island... I always promised myself I'd try again, but never did. Sad loss.
Honestly... I think people who know a lot of science are probably the biggest problem with science education.
I would never have figured Chris Mooney for a Slashdotter. You learn something new every day. (Enjoyed the first one Chris, but give it a rest would you?)
Maybe they have a different concept of year? Just like 40 days and 40 nights is not a literal 40 days - it just means a very long time.
Yes, and maybe wibble. And maybe the moon is made of cheese, but "cheese" really means "rock". And up is down and black is white and left is right...depending. All the jackasses who believe that I've ever seen/heard/been unfortunate enough to meet define "year" as "year", as in 365 of your earth days. (Where "day" is 24 hours, where hour is "60 minutes" where "minute" is "60 seconds" where...etc. all the way down along with the turtles). Biblical literalists are not subtle enough to do what you're suggesting. And even if they were, what's the point of saying "year" when you mean "100 million years" the narguing the toss about it? Just to be bloody minded?
The point is that atheism is as much an act of faith as any theism.
Right...in exactly the same way as not playing tennis is a sport. Atheism is a lack of faith, not an act of faith. There is no evidence for gods or faeries or santa claus; are you agnostic about faeries? If not why not? Why so sure? How about santa? How about gods? Why claim agnosticism in the face of gods but not Russell's teapot? It's an absurd cowardly accommodationist position.
In school, you were (maybe) told a simplification because you were a kid. A lot of what they have to teach kids in school is simplified because it takes a lot of work and time and effort to get from your second link to the inferences that led to the depiction in the first. This is not idle guesswork, but good solid science. The fact that you, without any relevant training, can't see how to get from A to B has no bearing whatsoever on the find. A lot of work went into analysing Lucy, and there is good evidence to back up the assertions made based on that fossil. The fact that it gets revised as new data come to light is a good thing BTW.
>BadAnalogyGuy (945258): We looked at the Alan Shepards, Louis Armstrongs, and Buzz Aldrins as supermen. They were our Sanjaya back then. The right stuff, they had it, and we wanted to have it too.
I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.
I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.
The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do
They're really saying I love you.
I hear babies crying, I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll never know
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world.
I agree, always wanted to play the horn like that, but what does that have to do with NASA?
You put Lucy and Piltdown in the same category? And someone mods you Insightful? What does "allegedly impossible to fake" mean anyway? Piltdown was a fake, and was uncovered as such. So, definitely not impossible to fake. The cricket bat he was buried with was dead giveaway too. You're not seriously suggesting equivalence with Lucy though are you?

American fundamentalists != modern Christianity The rest of the Christian world != a few fringe Christians
Thank you. As a Christian living and practicing my faith in modern America, I often find myself frustrated and dismayed at damage done to the public perception of the Christian faith by groups like the Christian Coalition; and by those who would rather point to carefully selected parts of scripture as an attempt to justify hatred, violence, and nationalism than to truly embrace and grow into what is really a faith of love, hope, and compassion.
I am persistently puzzled by how the Republican Party came to be associated with Christianity in the US. Looking at the actual actions taken by Jesus (the miracles) he seemed to be in favor of lots of free medical care, and a fair amount of feeding of hungry masses, and being rather forgiving of debts. That looks to be far more in line with policies associated with the Democratic Party than with traditional Republican policies. My Bible doesn't have "The Miracle of the Multi-National" or "The Blessing of the Interventionist Army".
So what are you going to do about it? I'd be deathly embarrassed to have these jackasses speak for me, and whether you like it or not, they do speak (loudly) for you, and include you in their "80% of Americans are christians like us" statistics they like to use to silence criticism. Stand up, and ostracise them. Let the world know just what %age are actually these batshit insane fundie death cult just can't wait for the end times Armageddon's just peachy keen with us wackaloons and that you want your religion back from the oil and arms companies.
In a four-page written order (download here.), the Florida Supreme Court today affirmed a referee's recommendation to permanently disbar controversial Miami attorney Jack Thompson... The Court also upheld a fine of $43,675 against Thompson.
I think the end-times are upon us. Time to move to Alaska for the rapture...
....they need: 1) A good actor as they had in Harrison Ford. 2) Faith that their audience is intelligent, so they don't have to go all "Summer blockbuster" on us. 3) A director who is willing to give the film the atmosphere it needs. Let's cross our fingers we get all of these. ...and hope against hope that Will Smith is busy that week
...if science-minded people want others to "see the light" on this one, stick to the facts and leave the religion-bashing alone.
I'd be happy to do this if it was reciprocal. I suspect many of us have no real problem with whatever people want to believe as long as it doesn't encroach on other people. Unfortunately, the fundies have a hard time keeping their noses out of everyone else's business/school/bedroom, and so invite what you call religion bashing. I don't care if they: think they have magic underwear that stops lightning; think their skyfairy doesn't want them to eat shellfish; believe a monkey built a landbridge between India and Sri Kanka; the universe was created last Thursday with the appearance of being billions of years old; that their desert genie popped a saddle on a TRex or rode around on a talking donkey. I do care when they try to force everyone else to agree with them, force their way into the school system and replace legitimate education with their own fantasies, prevent the development of health care and withhold medical treatment because it offends their sensibilities. I do care when they can't seem to get enough of abusing everyone around them for their immoral lifestyles while doing meth with rentboys or engaging their autoerotic asphyxiation/rubber fetish (I also don't care about their consensual adult drug/sex choices - I do object to the hypocrisy though), robbing their followers blind, all the time getting huge tax breaks from the government. The hypocrisy and stupidity must be brought to light unless you fancy the idea of letting these people turn back the clock to pre-enlightenment, where the populace is cowed into compliance by torture and violence. The evolution issue is only the thin end of the dominionist wedge. Live and let live only works when both sides on an issue are willing to play ball.
The summary says they are the ridiculous price of $7,250, while if you bothered to RTFA you'd see they're only $2,750 a pair, which of course changes everything. Why, I could win the money from James Randii, buy some of these danceable cables, and still have enough left over for some of those wooden knobs.
Convince me.
