  1. Economies of Scale? on LCD Price Fixing? · · Score: 1, Informative

Well, sure there is markup with monitors but you have to realize there are probably way more displays made for laptop sizes (12-15in) then there are for desktops (15-21+). If they make less of the larger displays and they cost more per display because investment in manufacturing. So of course they are going to cost more because there aren't as many made. Finally, on the tv displays, the flat panel displays are plasma which is a phosphorous based display. These aren't the same as the tfts in pc monitors so it is comparing apples and oranges.

  2. Computer Engineer vs Computer Scientist on Are Programmers Engineers? · · Score: 1, Interesting

Alright, I just recently got my Computer Engineering degree, and I can tell you plane and simple the difference between me and a computer scientist. My education was centered on the design and operation of an actual product like an embedded system or cpu. A computer scienstist at my school, UT, spend most of their time on theory about how to program and such. As an engineer I had very few just plain theory classes, I was constantly working electrical circuit problems.

I'm not saying that all programmers are concerned with theory, cause I know plenty who aren't, but I know very few engineers who aren't working on designing some aspect of an actual product.

Also, sony MIGHT be top of the line at best buy or some store like that, but they are far from top of the line if you include the brands not sold at BB, CC, etc..

I mean the bulk packs are seriously lacking in quality. Also there is no point in getting a dvd burner now because of all the - and + garbage going on. The only place in town that even sells - anymore is frys, everybody else is going to the + standard. Sure - might be better now, but it prolly won't be in the future.

Now I'm not saying there isn't any theory in programming, but I am saying there isn't any theory in programming for 99% of programmers. Sure there are those geniuses who come up with new sorting routines and better ways of doing stuff, but we ain't talking about them in intro courses. Most programming is cutting and pasting. You guys can jump around it all you want, but most coders cut and paste from shit they already know works and then try to get it to work in their own code.
