...I have felt I have had to work twice as hard to get noticed when working amongst non-Latinos/Blacks. It was the only way to be noticed. The Spanish last name makes people automatically assume English is my second language when in fact my entire family has been in the United States for over a century now. The Latino looks make most think I don't have any technical skill. Even when I open my mouth to speak (I have a BSCS, and can speak quite well, thank you), most still assume I have no technical skill.
No, it's not an issue of trying to prove myself as "overcoming the odds". I can care less about that. However, I do feel subtle stereotypes make most perspective managers feel at first glance that I'd be better suited for some ethnic studies position at best.
NOTE - I'm a tanned latino with brown skin. There are many light skinned latinos with more of a european influence which would make them more likely pass as "white". I am not one of those. Also, for you non-Americans out there, there are not many pure spaniards that live in the US, so no you can't try to argue that the last name could also imply I'm from spain.
1. Tactics. It's hard to coordinate with people that don't speak English well and have an effective and fun session. I already deal with non-English speakers at work, so why should I have to deal with it during my recreation?
2. Community. I saw someone said that building guilds around localization is not a good thing. Perhaps that's the case with a few, but I think people just want to socialize and have good fun. When I was playing FFXI, we had Canadians, Americans, a few Brits, and even some Japanese players who spoke English very well. You want to be able to communicate!
Now, one thing I see WoW lacking is some sort of library of international expressions which display the language of the client. I know PSO was one of the first, and FFXI did the same.
The FCC regulates "open broadcasting", such as broadcast television and radio. Cable is considered exempt, as a person has to pay for cable service. This is why shows like the Dave Chappel show and the Sopranos which wouldn't pass FCC regulation do run on cable.
The internet is a paid service, just like cable, and by precendent of the FCC's "hands off" approach to cable, the same would be done with the internet. Also, keep in mind that the medium for many internet connections are done via cable, so wouldn't that add an odd double standard if the assumption were to come true?
Granted, there is no formal law prohibiting the FCC from touching cable. It's the most vocal and powerful segments of the public which moreso guide the FCC's choices in regulatory domain moreso than legislation.
...for the most part. From what I recall most musicians (with exception of super stars) tend not to taste much of the profit their songs generate. Most musicians still, to this day, end up signing away a lot of their future royalties from the songs as well. This is one of the major reasons why artists still go on tour, as that's their primary source of income.
I'd imagine it's the label that gets at least 60 of those cents, 30 to Apple, and the 9 cents left to the artist.
...as since the downfall of the battleship occured during the cold war. Since then, the only element that truely has helped keep the value of the world's navies are aircraft carriers. I'm guessing China has some variation of Soviet technology for that.
However, you need more than a navy to support air units, such as a number of bases throughout the world to allow for units larger than fighters to be deployed. You also need more than fighters to display overwhelming force. I'm not aware of any Chinese stealth bombers.
I haven't seen your show in much depth, but I have yet to know of an episode where a Myth was confirmed. After reading about the MIT confirmation (http://web.mit.edu/2.009/www/lectures/10_Archimed esResult.html/) of the Archimedes' Death Ray, would you at least be willing to either A) Attempt to reproduce the MIT experiment to the letter or B) concede?
I've heard and read on the news reports a good number of these rioters are coordinating attacks via text messaging devices. This sounds to me a lot of pre-meditation is going on.
First off, I want to point out even after watching CNN, I have come to understand these rioters are rioting due to feeling they aren't being heard politically. I think people seeking for attention just say something along the lines of "Fox and CNN don't show the clear picture".
Anyway...
1) I have heard for the past couple years anti-Semitism has increased dramatically in the past few years, especially in France from the increasing Arab and North African populations. So are these the same people who are rioting?
2) I have read a few articles about the Roma and the treatment of Roma populations through Europe, which seems to be somewhat of an unspoken topic. Can anyone provide any feedback on this?
Any information would be useful to help me gain a better understanding of what's going on these days in the EU.
Great point. This brings back memories of when I read through the GURPS Cyberpunk book back in high school, when I'd game with my classmates. Definitely was the reason why I started reading Gibson and made me much more interested in computers. Granted, I can't "jack in" to the net, but the layers involved in the game were pretty mind stimulating.
Crap aside, the cyberpunk book was realistic enough to cause a lot of fanfare and a total misunderstanding on the part of the govt.
The parent is totally right. We are in a total drought of good sci fi. Action + Space/Future theme does not necessarily equate to sci-fi or anything a geek should watch. Please, guys, have some taste.
On Yahoo movies, Serenity is ranked as the number 1 film currently in theaters and is hanging in a top-ten spot in the highest rated movies of all time.
As with the majority of slashdot posters on here, I am a total sci-fi junkie, but does Serenity really qualify to be within the top 10 movies of all time? Granted, this is a yahoo poll and probably was saturated by people so desperate for anything with a futuristic theme they're willing to hump a movie which was written by a guy who make a witch turn lesbian in another show with declining ratings.
I seriously cannot understand what is so great and original about this movie. Sci-fi meets cowboy theme has already been stretched in 26 episodes (plus a movie) of Cowboy Bebop.
I don't even see Bladerunner on this Yahoo top 10 of all time list. Dune? Seriously, are you going to tell me Serenity is better than Bladerunner?
I recall reading a statistic 70% of all printed works in Japan are manga. Yes, most of it isn't about superheroes, but a good, large enough percentage is, and it should be noticed by these people speaking.
Manga is definitely changing the expectations the average comic book reader has even in the US with the advent of anime, which in many cases directly adapt manga series.
First off, you are under no obligation to tell your employer why you are leaving. There are a couple reasons why you want to do this:
1. If you state any reason, this may come to haunt you later in a future job search. Your boss may try to abuse your wording as to your reason of leaving, which can set off a paranoia flag in the back of the interested future employer's mind. By future employer, I don't mean the company you'll be going to, but one in the future.
2. You will always need to keep your story 100% straight. Bosses tend to know other bosses, regardless of industry. =/
I realize you're in a small company, but you don't want to give anyone any reason for creating doubt in your future job search.
Considering many of the scientists that made fundamental discoveries such as Mendel and Copernicus were Catholic men of the cloth, I would say that you're dead off.
As for the money going to Rome, you are a bit way off. The vast majority of the money that you tithe on Sunday most likely went to the diocese you live in. If you wanted to make a good complaint, you should have said the money is going to the legal defense fund of those priests accused of molestation.
Have some sensitivity, considering this affects the lives of over 1 billion Catholics in the world.
I did call the Apple store before posting my question. Their reply was three-fold:
1) We can't comment on what the size of the time window is, because we don't know. 2) We can't even comment on past behavior because some would imply that to be a guarantee of how things will be with regard to Tiger. 3) We can't comment on the announcement date nor the release date for Tiger because we don't know.

...I want to see it again! I didnt' think I'd enjoy all the songs because I am not heavily into Final Fantasy, but boy, was it great. Nothing like hearing Aeris' theme or the Ron. theme from FFXI Online in a music hall.
We also got a special treat by hearing "Sephiroth" which is to be used in the upcoming FFVII movie

I agree with the parent 110%. Would a store pay the Postal Service to transport money to a bank? No! They use armored transport.
Definitely good insight. Please mod chade01 up!

Are you sure it's 30 days? I'm planning to pick up a powerbook today, but i'm concerned about waiting too long....anyone have a more definite answer?
That is, how far ahead is the time window in order to get a free OS replacement from the time of hardware purchase?
This is a by-product of UPS's Industrial Engineering unit with the aim of not keeping an eye on their employees as much as making sure packages are sent as quickly as possible.
Without this unit you wouldn't have packages sent as quickly to you thanks to their research in creating systems to determine the shortest land route to deliver as many packages as possible or track packages accurately.
This is with the aim of helping deliveries of your amazon product or thinkgeek gear get to you as quickly as possible. What's the problem with that?
