It is so funny they try to link anything they can think of that they dont like to be "funding terrorist" But you dont hear much about the 1 thing we know does fund terrorist! GAS
I agree with BuckaBooBob here! It just doesn't ever make sense that people think I can sell something for cheaper than I pay for that service and make money. IF you do you wont be around long, some people are still convinced bandwidth is cheap, that some company paid to have a span of fiber ran around the country for their services only, and for 50$ a month, hey its cheap! Allot of their providers can offer decent bandwidth to you into their network, hoping to make up the infrastructure costs over time, and hoping to get enough of the business out there to develop a client base. They may get bandwidth a little cheaper from Sprint or Cable and wireless than I do cause they buy more of it, But i guarantee you that if the had 100 customers paying for 100mb apiece they wouldn't have a Gigabit connection to their peers. 1 reason for this that it probably wouldn't be needed, most the time you simply monitor those connections and know why it needs to be a bigger connection. they still cant give but so many people connection that are in use 24/7 using 100mb for cheaper than they pay themselves for that connection.
Gezzz, Cogent has to at some time connect to a Top Tier provider. UUNET for one is a huge part of the Internet backbone... you connection to the net is only as good as services connection to the part of the internet you happen to be going to. That is why if you have a Big UUNET connection you have a better chance that the server you are connecting to is on thier network or that the client that is connecting to your webserver will get better bandwidth. Most ISP's will be BGP peered with serveral TOP TIER service providers, so that customers on C&W and on UUNET and on SPRINT will go through the that connection to you. The internet is just a big interconnected network, look at the connection points to other networks not jsut the connection within the network you are connected. For instance, looking at the Cogent website they sure look like they have a nice backbone, but I couldnt find any info on who they peer with. That is usually the most important info wwhen looking at a Tier 1 service provider, who do you peer with and how many time, where at? how much bandwidth is that peering? Cogent sounds nice if me and my customer are both on the Cogent network. good luck though.
You are still wrong dude, even at what even datacenter you are sharing bandwidth, if you were actully using 300GB a month they would lose money on you, I dont think they are getting that bandwidth that cheap. I know that a OC3 from top level backbone provider, Sprint, Cable and wireless, UUNET for instance is very exspensive and that is only what 150 160 mb ? Most the time this is just over subscription just like anything else.

What ISP are we talkig about?
This one?
This seems honest to me. So it is unlimited up to use up too 100mb. If you dont runs servers etc... other wise they are going to charge you a corperate price. People just always want to get something for free, just admit it.
I disagree, this was the biggest problem with the Dot com fad, everyone was so excited about the technology and the money that might be able to be made, that no one was bothering to actually add up the bills. It is very hard to even make a buck now a days running a ISP, for years allot of smaller ISP's got by, and made themselves (their business) look better than it was. Providing people with unlimited bandwidth for 50$ a month is hard to do when you figure out all the costs. Allot of times they didn't have the actual bandwidth they said they did, just to bring in a profit etc... Most these companies where hoping they would get bought out in the dot com craze and did. The bigger telecoms bought up the smaller guys knowing there would be a loss but also where thirsty for what might the biggest thing in their future, and not wanting to be left out of a good thing. Now a days things have changed a little, allot of the smaller ISPs gone, and you might still be able to get a cheap line, but more and more people and businesses have learned that you get what you pay for and don't mind paying a little bit more to know that the company wont fold tomorrow leaving them stuck with allot of problems that they would have had from a bigger more respected company that has to play the publicity game more often. I think bandwidth is still pretty expensive right now, the charges on an OC3 connection are not cheap and most ISPs pay by the bandwidth used.
Plus you got the problem mentioned here. I do not believe this problem is about Web services, that may be a problem for some, but I think that I parked server that uses up allot of bandwidth for their website should just pay up. For allot of the reasons already mentioned from others. But the problems really happen when a Virus or a Bug leads to unreasonable bandwidth usage. Code Red hurt allot, but after the first couple hours we had filters in place that blocked most the negative traffic from the Virus at the core routers. Also the recent SQL bug was blocked pretty fast so that people didn't accrue a huge bill. So we are learning fast how to help our customers and ourselves not get into these problems, But there have been some times when a person has hacked a server and loaded a FTP with games and porn whatever and caused them to have a bill in the tens of thousands of dollars and the customer didn't have a clue any of that was coming. I think we will learn to avoid allot of this, even though it may still be the customers responsibility to configure the server, The ISPs are learning that to keep customers and not get into these problems the have to do more monitoring and check the network more for anything unusual like this. A simple script that runs every night that checks for anonymous FTP PUTS can save everyone allot grief.
Allot of ISPs are just starting to turn a buck again getting spending down to something reasonable that is more inline with their income. And keeping allot of the more talented people that can really help in these situations will be key to better service. These lines will get cheaper as the money initially invested gets
Anyone know how the resolution of this OLED compares with normal camera displays of the same size? Artical says this OLED is 512 x 218 is that good for a 2.2" display or crapy?
If you want to make a great fundamental discovery in one of the hard sciences, then become a biologist. So much is unknown!
I just saw a short mention of Dolly on the news. They mentioned that they might be able to tell from some testing if the reason the animal had problems was cause she was a clone. Isn't it possible that even though we are smart enough to play with making these clones, we still don't have the technology to understand it, or tell if the animals problems were do to cloning or just a coincidence? Just curious about that I guess.
Gezz some of you gguys jsut done watch TV i know this, but there are things like PayPerVeiw and also alot of PORN channels that are unlocked that are not in a one prive gets all fee like you are talking about. I dont think you can pay a set fee and vet all pay per veiw and all porn channels, most porn channels are a PPV type thang also.
I agree man, I found this article restating most the negative things I have ever herd about EQ.
But some of us like the game, I have played since the 3rd Beta of this game got 160+ hours in the game right now and have taken some breaks, I definitely understand peoples frustrations and why, But come on people there is absolutely no way someone can make a game that makes everyone happy.
For one thing it is hard to make a addictive game that is fun and also EASY. take this statement: "Everquest is a game centered on rewarding you for how much time you put into it" Then he goes on to say this is because they want more money, OK beside this being a business and understanding they want to keep people playing the game not just playing and then quitting it, I think of the above statement as a PLUS in some ways, I mean some people will always be able to play more than you, you might not be the best on the server, these are problems that people have a hard time getting used to, but the fact is that the more you PUT into the game the more you GET OUT of the game and that is nice. It is nice that if you have spent 3 years playing a game and someone starts a new character and plays 6 months they get a idea of the amount of things you must have went through to get to the level or status or items you have.
Allot of times I think people try to bend games to suit them, and that aint right, sure I have some things I would love to change about EQ, if it was a single player game them maybe a MOD just for me would be nice or something but its not that kind of game.
This is a big game and it can be played allot of different ways, I used to raid allot with my guild then I took a break, got burnt out, that seems natural it was summer time and going outside is a good thing, but now i get online find some of my friends and we gather up and kill some things in a zone for fun and EXP. I have allot of fun doing that.
Hating Sony is silly, they did invent this kind of game, sure UO was out first and I am sure there are some others, but EQ was the first game that gave me 3D graphics and let me run around in a 3D world with my friends get lost, ride a boat across some sea, hide from giants while traveling etc, all in 3D with people everywhere. I loved it.
The game is not perfect, I am sure prefect would be impossible, but for a first of its kind game, give them a little bit of a break, when i think of what it would take to make this game, and then keep it running, and trying to keep EVERYONE happy, while when you make one people happy you upset others, but making one classes armor more powerful you make others upset etc... its not easy and it takes allot of time to get things right. I would like to see other try to do better, just to come out and have to tell people that they have to do things for the best for everyone etc... or they would just say here eveyone gets the best stuff instantly and they will be happy, do you think that really what people want? sure they want that know then they quite playing and have to find another game. Being the creator of these games has got to in some ways be like trying to be the parents of people even grown ups, sine allot of time what they want you cant give them cause you know its not good fro them:) they will end up unhappy. there has to be some things in life that are hard to get, that makes you like it more when you have spent the effort to get it. These are things people complain about.
Right now the one thing I really wish they would change about EQ is the fast that unless you are in a big guild or have allot of friends there are some things you will never get. I was lucky enough to get my EPIC, had a guilds help for sure. But now with levels 61+ some of the spells i will never get unless a guild helps me, I really hate the fast that my character will never be have all his spells, I can live with him not having the Best items, good items will do, but seems sad I read about a ability that ii probably wont get or wont get for a long time. Sometimes people don't want to have to get caught up in the Guild thing so much. the problem with the arcticle is that it makes it sound like it isn't up to the player, and it is. I can live with not getting my spells, I am sure eventually i might get most of them. I hate it that they cant just make it hard and not necessary to have 50+ people with you to get a certain spell. But there is nothing that makes me have to do anything I still log in and find my friends and play to have some fun most the time:)
Allot of the complaints to me sound like someone that don't like to play someone else's games by their rules, and that is what this is, that is what most games are! you cant play chess and decide your Knight can move sideways because you think it should be that was then make fun of the game and say I don't understand the vision of this game and say in your version of chess this is the way that piece moves, there are rules and things in game that are there to make if fun, and some people don't like that. You will always hear someone say , but it should be like this or that, or they don't understand why it is this way, don't like it don't play the game! And don't say your addicted, that makes me laugh, if you are going to tell me you are addicted to a game that sucks, well i could go on forever to try to explain why that is funny.
I for one, will find it hard not to look for this, I am sorry I have much respect for John and id, But its like crack or something. I have to do it. Didnt this happen with Q1 and then id releases something official after the leak? I think I downloaded that also:(
Or what happened when you tried to get some? If a girl takes you out to watch the stars, I hope you at least tried and didnt get so into watching the stars you forgot!
Um what good is a internet connection that goes out when it rains hard? snows or heavy fog? especialy for backbone use? maybe for a temp connection or something. But I would hate to pay good money for a connection that only worked on the Sunny days I want to be outside.
That would be the best answer, I would think for this guys problem. I recently just purchased a ATI 8500DV video card and am waiting on the component output dongle to arrive in the mail. I am hoping that it will let me use the ATI card to do 1080i to my HDTV. I know that I could have just bought a transcoder and used a utility like powerstip to get the right resolution from any video card, but wanted to try this to see what's up. The drivers so far look really sweet and have setting for 1080i built right into them, just cant even use the drivers unless you use the ATI adapter (dongle) for some reason. I am hoping that this will actually let me read the text on my TV screen from my PC. And if it works Ill try to post back here to let people know, I should get the dongle tomorrow.
These days, I think most all ISP's support MACS, Maybe, But back when you used to have to install FreeePPP for a MAC and some Dialup stack for a PC and I worked for a ISP, We tried to support macs for awhile and found that it wasnt worth the fustration with working with teh 10 MAC users to actully SUPPORT it, we still would sell accounts to them, and offer the software for download but wouldnt support it if they couldnt get it to work.
Now adays I am sure that isnt a problem, unless with this satellite service you have to install drivers for a USB modem or something, then maybe this would still apply.
The American economy's slowdown during the Clinton years has ended and we've been accelerating for a couple of years now
Hmmm that comment surprises me, What RAW data should I go read, cause it seems like during Clinton to me, the economy was doing well, and not untill alittle more than a year now has it been sucking.
Even thought I agree with the concept of waiting to get 128 megs, cause waiting is always best, cheaper! But i have to agree witht he writer here. I dont think the article shows the difference very well, cause of teh apps chosen. I dont think you will see a speed difference in 64 megs and 128 megs intil the memory on the video card runs out, and I mean that it runs out while you are playing in real time, and then you have to swap with whats in you system RAM. For instance, take a game like EQ (everquest) Its been around for awhile, but I know that once of the big things about this game was that if they had more video memorym teh game could hold alot more tectures per Zone. That would mean that when you enter a zone that the number of DIFFERENT monsters and Different textures on the walls is limited by the minimum system requiments of video memory. I know that when some people would say hey why cant my pet have this look everywhere in the game? The reason it couldnt was because that that texture would have to be pre loaded in to everyones video memory that enters that zone just incase you happen you run into that model with that texture. For that matter think of a game liek that, not like quake or something, that has hundred of tecture for armor and swords and hats clothes, faces. and even in that game not evything you put on your body shows, but it would be nice if it did. And I am sure that is why more video memory would be nice. Your video card has to have loaded into it every people and every combination of cloths etc.. that could possible be show on the screen at that given time. Most FPS hardly compare with maybe 50 skins and 10 - 20 weapons? I think the newer online RPG's will utilize that memory alot more with the 1000's of objects that people like to see in the game.
Dosn't a XBOX use the same memory for the system and the video? I thought I read that somewhere. What type of memory do they use, I wouldnt think it could be all that expensive if it is used in the xbox. Seems to work very well also useually. of corse all it has to do is play games, but still it is done there. Guess its a faster BUS than a AGP bus also?
Cant belive I would reply to such a stupid post but... 1 mbit might be considered slow in the future. Problem is you are thinking of 1 gigabit of todays media, tomorrow's media might be full motion real time media that you can respond to etc.. or maybe more. I remember when I bought a 5 GB hard drive (cost me 500$ +) The guy at the store said! WTF are you going to do with all that space! Mostly cause back then the only thing people did was maybe save some.gif or.jpeg on thier hard drive. But i was starting to encode.mp3's etc... Things change and things like this make that change possible. Dont be so narrow minded.
One thing that it messed up about this HD talk we are having is, I wish this whole conversation would be split into 2 sections. 1. New HD Formate for higher resolutions 2. New Digital interfaces that are for Copy Protection.
I bought my HD TV about 1 year ago, I love it and watch alot of HD movies on HBO SHO etc... Granted these are mostly upcoverted, but look great still alot closer to the original film. Also have a prograssive DVD player and it looks great. But I dont have a DVI interface on my HDTV, and that is what we are talking about here right? Otherwise this whole topic here is badly misrepresented. Cause the guy said people would have to get rid of there old TV's. Right now any old TV can watch the content I watch on a old TV, just they would have to buy some sort of a down converter. But once they go to a DVI interface and encryption , this wont be the case I GUESS. I guess I would even have to purchase a new HDTV! This is the part that bothers me more than HDTV, I am all for making the resolution alot better, I can give you alot of reasons why. Best reason I can give would be to show you in my 56" TV and 5.1 stereo but thats hard to do! Buy the DVI and encryption part of this sounds really bad to me.
Dosnt anyone else see this as really 2 seperate things (issues), or is it just me?
Plenty of people veiw HD content every day in thier homes, I do, so I know I am not the only one, I have HD Cable and get a good bit of channels. Dont think just because you havent seen it, or even because a store cant set something up it cant be done, and people dont do it.

you cant play chess and decide your Knight can move sideways because you think it should be that was then make fun of the game and say I don't understand the vision of this game and say in your version of chess this is the way that piece moves, there are rules and things in game that are there to make if fun, and some people don't like that.
I have to do it.
Didnt this happen with Q1 and then id releases something official after the leak?
I think I downloaded that also
Or what happened when you tried to get some?
If a girl takes you out to watch the stars, I hope you at least tried and didnt get so into watching the stars you forgot!
(or even permanent) ?
I would be very interested to see how playing a video game on my HDTV would look through this thing.
The American economy's slowdown during the Clinton years has ended and we've been accelerating for a couple of years now
Hmmm that comment surprises me, What RAW data should I go read, cause it seems like during Clinton to me, the economy was doing well, and not untill alittle more than a year now has it been sucking.
WTF haha, wish i could sit around the house and get high all day.
For instance, take a game like EQ (everquest)
Its been around for awhile, but I know that once of the big things about this game was that if they had more video memorym teh game could hold alot more tectures per Zone.
Cant belive I would reply to such a stupid post but... .gif or .jpeg on thier hard drive. But i was starting to encode .mp3's etc...
1 mbit might be considered slow in the future.
Problem is you are thinking of 1 gigabit of todays media, tomorrow's media might be full motion real time media that you can respond to etc.. or maybe more.
I remember when I bought a 5 GB hard drive (cost me 500$ +)
The guy at the store said! WTF are you going to do with all that space!
Mostly cause back then the only thing people did was maybe save some
Things change and things like this make that change possible.
Dont be so narrow minded.
I agree
One thing that it messed up about this HD talk we are having is, I wish this whole conversation would be split into 2 sections.
1. New HD Formate for higher resolutions
