The kid is lucky he is only getting detention. If he were to use unauthorized software in many workplaces, he could lose his job and very possibly end his career!
When this issue first came up, I looked into whether or not you can buy a "made in USA" laptop (or at least not "made in China"). It can be done, but it's very hard. It's certainly hard to do so if you wish to buy a "major brand" laptop.
The way this legislation was described, a lot of kid sites and gaming sites could also be affected. For example, I gave my 9-yo daughter a membership to Disney's "Toontown" (http://www.toontown.com)site. It lets her create profiles and chat with other players. Is this what they had in mind?
Outsourcing is Treason when it finances a hostile power that uses the funds it gains to engage in espionage and cyberwar against us, while preparing to go to war against us.
Increasingly, Computer Game Playing (or, rather, Computer manipulation) is becoming a skill of some importance. For example, there was a recent article in the Washington Post about Coal Mining in Virginia:
I once read that the prohibition against eating pork had more to do with the ecology of raising pork. In particular, the mud wallows Pigs require can ruin water sources. This can be disastrous in an Arid region. Also, unlike Sheep and Goats that eat grass we don't eat, Pigs are fed grains that people eat.
I will wager that part of the costs mentioned in the article were for installation, integration, and support. Which means the MDs still have to pay, and we IT-people have an opportunity!
It might be better to look at % GDP, or other measures. The Czech Republic is a much poorer country than the US. They can pay qualified teachers for a LOT less than in the USA.
You win the Marie Antoinette award for the week! If you have to live in a hotel, you don't have an oven to "bake your own bread" or "cook a roast". You don't have space to grow your own tomatoes either. You might not even have access to a range top or microwave. It's even worse if you have to live in your car!
I don't think that Microsoft.Net is necessarily just "ripping off" Java. Managed code has been around from the beginning of the PC. One very good example was the UCSD P-System.
If you reprocess Nuclear Wastes by removing the long-lived Radioactive Isotopes (U-235, Pu-238), and use them in reactors, you are left with stuff that is only radioactive for 10's - 100's of years.
Congress-critters are unlikely to fund NASA enough to support that timeline unless we get some serious competition. We need a space race! By someone who will scare the constituents into demanding Congressional action and funding! Mars Needs China!
This is nothing new. In the 19th century, small Derringer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derringer/ ) pistols were fairly common.
If you are interested in working overseas, consider working for the US Government or a Federal Contractor.

I wonder what the PA police would make of Gordon Bell http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordon_Bell/ and the MyLifeBits project http://research.microsoft.com/barc/mediapresence/M yLifeBits.aspx/?
Protecting and Promoting American Manufactures and Enterprise is as American as Alexander Hamilton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_hamilton) and his "Report on Manufactures" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Report_on_Manufactur es). While he may be more concerned about trade depenedence on China than Britain today, his analysis is still useful today.
You know that this is probably violating someone's patent. Probably MULTIPLE patents!
Most employers treat their employment contracts as "take it or leave it" documents. If you request changes, you'll be shown the door!

The EU is based upon different priorities than than our current "race-to-the-bottom", pit "all-against-all" (*) Globalization model of the USA.
* - Where all is the working / middle classes, and the rich get the tax cuts!
>>Do you realize that by interconnecting your economies you make war a lot less likely.
That is what a lot of people said in 1900. We know what happened by 1914.
>> How is outsourcing treason?

One overlooked factor in all this is how the USA's tax cut fever, starting with Prop 13 in California, has sapped our education system.

Seriously, it may well end up a hit with the military. Silent operation can be a major tactical asset on the battlefield!

If wish to check things out from a slightly "leftwing" bias, you might check out "SourceWatch" (formerly "Disinfopedia"):

The kids will still have jobs programming the robots:
"Hey Son, How do you program this thing? It's still flashing 12:00!"
