While he may be more concerned about trade depenedence on China than Britain today, his analysis is still useful today.

    When this issue first came up, I looked into whether or not you can buy a "made in USA" laptop (or at least not "made in China"). It can be done, but it's very hard. It's certainly hard to do so if you wish to buy a "major brand" laptop.

    The way this legislation was described, a lot of kid sites and gaming sites could also be affected. For example, I gave my 9-yo daughter a membership to Disney's "Toontown" (http://www.toontown.com)site. It lets her create profiles and chat with other players. Is this what they had in mind?

    I once read that the prohibition against eating pork had more to do with the ecology of raising pork. In particular, the mud wallows Pigs require can ruin water sources. This can be disastrous in an Arid region. Also, unlike Sheep and Goats that eat grass we don't eat, Pigs are fed grains that people eat.

    It might be better to look at % GDP, or other measures. The Czech Republic is a much poorer country than the US. They can pay qualified teachers for a LOT less than in the USA.

    You win the Marie Antoinette award for the week! If you have to live in a hotel, you don't have an oven to "bake your own bread" or "cook a roast". You don't have space to grow your own tomatoes either. You might not even have access to a range top or microwave. It's even worse if you have to live in your car!

    I don't think that Microsoft .Net is necessarily just "ripping off" Java. Managed code has been around from the beginning of the PC. One very good example was the UCSD P-System.

    If you reprocess Nuclear Wastes by removing the long-lived Radioactive Isotopes (U-235, Pu-238), and use them in reactors, you are left with stuff that is only radioactive for 10's - 100's of years.

    Congress-critters are unlikely to fund NASA enough to support that timeline unless we get some serious competition. We need a space race! By someone who will scare the constituents into demanding Congressional action and funding! Mars Needs China!
