Fine and dandy, but WTF is the point of posting a story that is soley based around a media file that no one can see before even a single comment is posted? It seems like an interesting concept and its too bad no slashdot readers can see it today.
If this happens as often as it does and and enough people complain about it, than maybe the process will change, regardless of what the FAQ states.
I can get the page to load, but the movie itself times out. Man that was quick. How many posts of "Make sure there is a mirror before putting a story on the front page" will it take before the editors get it?
I just got my wife a Roomba robot vacum cleaner, and I have to say its one of the coolest things I've seen in a long time. It makes us feel like we're finally in the 2000's to have this little robot rolling around picking up cat hair while you are free to do other things.
I get really excited about the prospects of putting robotics to use in the home. Sure their use in science is great, but its pretty cool to have "Rosie" cleaning up!
I clicked on that wile browsing from my throne (laptops with wireless connections = the new newspaper folded under the arm) and essentially saved myself from pissing all over myself.
Its great if its not an inconvenience to me. If the service becomes annoying to me, I will simply not use it. If its convenient and non-intrusive, than I will continue to use it. I could care less about the "hating evil corporations" bit, I just happy with my existing email services and won't use one that annoys me.
Maybe they should stop focusing on "Making the internet better" and make it less cumbersome for their users. Each version is so much worse than the last. And why are they still using IE at the core when they own the development of the world's best browser???
Check out the system requirements for Logic Express:
Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G4 or faster processor (G5 or dual G4 processors recommended) 512MB of RAM Mac OS X v10.3 or later 4GB of available hard disk space DVD drive for software installation Low-latency multi-I/O audio hardware and MIDI interface recommended Separate hard drive recommended for high-resolution audio tracks
Notice anything missing? No more XSKey dongles!! Woohoo for Apple respecting the limited available ports on powerbooks! Unfortunately, Pro still requires one. Still, that and the ability to import Garageband projects are enought to warrant a purchase - I can't stand software that punishes paying users.
Lucas Arts' most promising game - "Mercenaries" is coming out right after Christmas to stand out amongst the glut of games coming out this holiday season. Their idea is to capitalize on the kids who get cash as a gift. Sounds like a good idea to me.
Opie and Anthony start broadcasting in October...with one catch: Its a "premium channel" that you have to pay and extra $1.99 for. I'm sure if Howard Stern moves to XM it will be the same deal - which sucks.
Sorry, but I can't read every story ever posted on Slashdot. When there is a dupe of a story it never really bothers me because most of the time I didn't see it the first time around (although I did remember this story because I bookmarked it).
Most stories that get duped are worth it for the chance to get updated feedback from the readers who have had a chance to think about the story since the last time they visited the topic.
I've been running a similar kind of site for a while now also (just not as frequently updated). I link to bands I'm friends with and sometimes host their music, as well as promote my own music at 8x7.org, and I try to provide news relevant to free music and the digital music movement.
I have always believed in the idea that the music should be made available for free, and a band can live off of everything that is around it (merch, touring, licensing of music). Depending on a label to carry your career is dangerous for 99% of the artists out there.
Totally true - I remember getting support calls from users wanting me to "tune up" their systems and if the user was a PITA, I would just change the registry settings for menus to be as fast as possible so that when they clicked on the start menu it would immediately pop up and they would always be impressed.
The appearance of a faster interface is just that - an appearance. Thats why when you boot XP the desktop will load really fast, but the HDD keeps spinning for a good while after. Same thing with Outlook - it will load the application window way before it finishes connecting to the server(s).
It would help if they could keep their site up long enough to see the darn things. Are they running it on a Vic-20???

That list is just phony. Server G4? That's not even a real product name. And you can no longer even buy a G3 iMac from Apple. Also, where the heck is an eMac option and why not iBook options if your going to list out dated iMac options?
This story might be relevant as a Macrumors page 2 article.
Every day one of my user's asks me for advise about buying a new computer, and each time I explain to them why they need a Mac.
The #1 reason is that there are no virus problems on a Mac, and no major problems with spyware, malware, and general browser hijacking. Having someone like me come to their house to clean out their PC will cost them much more over all than if they had just bought a Mac in the first place.
The #2 reason is the digital hub aspect. Adult's want mostly the same things from their home computers: Music, Digital Photos, Email, Internet Access, and Instant Messaging. All things that a Mac does better or the same as a PC minus most of the security woes and difficulty of setup. Most of the stuff they want to do will work right out of the box, nothing to install or mess with.
The #3 reason is investment. After 3 years, you can sell your Mac and still get a lot of money for it. Try selling a 3 year old PC and you will get a fraction of what a Mac resells for.
So, in conclusion, I see that as Windows gets so bad that I spend 3/4's of my day cleaning out spyware, viruses, and restoring hijacked machines to a workable state, people will start to get tired of it and turn to the best alternative. And I will be there ready to give them directions to the nearest Apple store.
Just because some of the content is from Sesame doesn't mean its not paid for by the channel. Sesame isn't donating content to Viacom.
Where are you basing your facts from anyway? How about some proof before you start claiming that Viacom is lying? Everything you claim is just your opinion and not necessarily the truth.
I personally don't think any one company should control all of media (monopolies are bad, mmkay), but I don't think this particular case needs to have any government interaction. Can you imagine if you could no longer buy the big box of Crayola crayons because the government thinks you shouldn't have to be forced to buy Silver when all you want is Magenta??? Its the same thing. Viacom just sells a package to a distributor at a profit. I'm sure Toys R' Us pays a smaller price for crayons than a corner shop because of their buying power. I'm sure Viacom gives better rates to other providers because of their respective buying power also. More viewers through a distributor = more ad sales = lower carrier rate.
Oh, and maybe they should throw Howard Stern off the air for talking against the GOP, oh... I mean talking about boobies.
The last thing we need is more government involvement in media companies. Look at what has happened to broadcast radio.
Let the companies flesh it out themselves. Dish Network does not have to carry Viacom and they chose not to. If you don't like it, go to another provider. Viacom has a product they want to sell in the form of bundled programming - I see nothing wrong with that. If you want Noggin, then you'll have to go somewhere else for its COMMERCIAL FREE PROGRAMMING. How did you think they could offer that? By bundling it with commercially supported networks.

That one died faster than you posted it! Anyone have a torrent?

I wonder if it would work with something like Carbon Copy Cloner and PSU Blast Image Config to take an image of an OS X install and copy it to the Shuffle RAID?
I would try it if I had 4 iPod Shuffles!

So how are they going to make money? Are they going to start advertising to POP users via email? If not, than this is great news.

The bug is very odd to me - it only happens on my wortk PC - never at home or on my work Macs. Its very annoying though.

Why? The movie is not pro-Kerry at all. Its just critical of team W.
I've had the interference problem with a Linksys 802.11B router and now an Airport Express with a Seimens phone and an AT&T phone (both 2.4GHz).
When I change the routers to channel 11, I get no problem whatsover. I guess you just need to find the right combination of gear.
