  1. Even if its Cheap, who woud buy from Walmart? on Exchange Rates Play With Online Music Prices · · Score: 3, Insightful

I can't imagine why anyone would support Walmart. They are taking a loss just to cut down the competition because they can. Apple takes a loss to sell iPods, WTF is Walmart trying to sell (besides the soul of every American consumer)?

Hopefully more record labels will join the fight against the RIAA like New York's GoKart Records.

  2. Re:30 second skip vs vcr commercial skip on The State of Automated Commercial Skipping · · Score: 1

With the replay, you keep hitting the skip button, until you reach the end of the commerical block, and then sometimes you have to backtrack.

That was the way it used to be, but they recently updated the software to "automagically" sense the end of a commercial block while your hitting the skip button and it stops (the skip icon changes in the corner of your screen to let you know that it has sensed the end of the block). It works correctly about 90% of the time too.

  5. Re:what came first? on Decoding the Algorithm for Pop Music · · Score: 1

I agree, that's why I started this site.

There is no reason to actually sell you songs anymore. Just give them away. Make CD's/Vinyl/whatever available for your fans to purchase (and make it worth whatever you charge), but I see no problem for the 99% of musicians who do not make enough money off of royalties to buy a cup of coffee giving away their music for free. Make your money off of touring, merchandising, and licensing.

This article talks about how record labels are urging artists to put fewer tracks on albums because fans are put off by too many average songs. Obviously the power needs to be taken away from the record labels because they think they know what we want out of artists!

The labels always get paid, why is that???

  6. Rules are meant to be broken. on Rules for Teenage Internet Access? · · Score: 1

Parents, once you're past making the huge mistake of actually letting the kids have computers in their rooms, what's a reasonable set of guidelines?

My daughter is 3 and a half, and I'm setting up a computer in her room. I want my children raised with computer skills. She already plays kid's video games, and browses through nick and nickjr.com. Every once in a while she asks for help and I show her what to do. I understand that in ten years it will probably be the other way around because she is learning computing from the start and will be much more proficient than us adults (like kids who grow up learning two languages).

Judging by your self-bashing remarks, you either a) don't understand computing and the internet, or b) don't understand your kid. Lighten up!

When I was a pubescent young teenager, if I wanted to look at porn, I had to find them in garbage cans, or rifle through friends parent's stashes and stuff. Now, kids can easily access this content - but so what? If they are at an age where it interests them, then they will find it any way they can. I would rather the kid finds it in his/her room than in some back alley, or worse yet gets taken advantage of because they don't know about sex and the body. Little kids don't see anything in porn or sex because they don't care about it. More importantly, if you know your kid is looking at porn on his/her computer, than that opens the door to conversations in which you can teach the kid about respect and consequences.

Don't set up strict rules for computer use. Teach the kid how scams work on the internet. Teach the kid about privacy and security - don't demand it! Telling them why and how is more effective than "because I said so".

  7. Major downfall on Dell DJ: Yet Another MP3 Player · · Score: 1

Selecting and playing songs wasn't as intuitive as I would have liked. In order to play your entire music library -- something most people do -- you need to create a playlist of all your songs on your PC. Otherwise you'll have to select songs or albums individually.

This is a real PITA to me, I listen to my iPod's complete library in random. With a DJ I would have to add every new song to a playlist in order for it to be heard. It may seem like a minor gripe, but I can't understand how something so simple was overlooked.

  15. Re:Still can't beat free...but these guys are tryi on Kazaa Backs Plan To Bill P2P Music Transfers · · Score: 1

Why not just be free? There's a perfectly simple model for this, just give your music away! I do, and its real simple when you think about it - most bands will never collect a royalty check from their record label, but will make their money though touring and merchandising. So why not cut out the record label? Its not like you need their money to record and manufacture a CD these days - the process is so cheap and accessible that my grandmother could put out a CD on her own dime if she wanted to. With the global distribution that is the internet, the only hurdle is getting your publicity covered, which if your actually talented will come by good old word of mouth after some hard touring.

So please, why are we still relying on record labels???

  16. Huh? on Microsoft Wants to Project "Cool" Image · · Score: 1

  17. In the not so distant future... on The Incredible Shrinking Recording Studio · · Score: 1

There is really no need for a record label anymore! You can record your music on your computer - it doesn't have to be a top of the line workstation to get good results, you can distribute the music on you website and through distributors such as CDBaby, and promote it on the internet.

I named my site "8x7.org" because my home office where I record is 8' by 7'. I think its symbolic of the shrinking hold that the big 5 record labels have on the industry.

  18. This should be illegal on File-Sharing Ethics Taught In Classrooms? · · Score: 4, Insightful

I wonder how much money the record companies spend to have such an influence in schools. Its a well known fact that kids make up the recording industry's largest market, so why is it that this commercial entity has an influence on children's morality and education? What kind of message is this sending?

Why not play the real starving artist game? The kids can sign a contract and never make a dime off of their intellectual property for the rest of their lives while the record company makes a fortune but still claims they haven't recouped their costs!

The Mirra appliance is expandable through its four USB 1.1 ports, and Ispiri plans to release hard disks and other devices for the server in 2004, Mandeberg says.

The image make it look like the size of a tower which could take internal IDE hard drives. It seems like the wording of this may be misleading, because who in their right mind would use a USB 1.1 external hard drive on a file server? If that is the case, who are they marketing this too?

  20. Re:Yikes on PowerBook 15" and 12" Disassembly · · Score: 1

These are the same people who slam on elevator buttons relentlessly even though its already lit. In fact, the guy who sits in the cube next to mine killed his Thinkpad's hard drive because Windows locked up and he kept slamming the space bar to get it to work. The thing blue screened and never booted again. We sent it for repair and found out the hard drive suffered a head crash!

  21. Yikes on PowerBook 15" and 12" Disassembly · · Score: 3, Interesting

  23. IP telephone service has come a long way on AT&T Migrating Phone Network to IP · · Score: 5, Interesting

A few years ago I was part of a deployment of an all IP Siemens phone system at this place I used to work at. The voicemeail was actually part of an MS exchange server, and you recieved all of your voicemail in you inbox in Outlook. I loved it because I could set up a PST and easily archive phone messages on my hard drive. Unfortunately the system suffered from horible sound quality (there was a lag when you talked to people and it echoed like crazy) and was just not ready for prime time. I got a great taste of the future of business IP phone systems, though.

  24. Vibrating Optical Mouse on Logitech Ships 500 Millionth Mouse · · Score: 1

I have a Logitech vibrating optical mouse. No, I don't do anything gross with it. It actually vibrates whenever you pass over any clickable object. Its quite a weird sensation, especially when you drag a scroll bar (it puts the thing into overdrive)! There are different types of vibrations you can set, and you can fully adjust the force. Its pretty pointless, but interesting nonetheless.

My favorite mouse though is Microsoft's $20 optical wheel mouse. It is the perfect size, its cheap, and it works flawlessly on my Macs and PCs with no additional drivers to install.

  25. Good Idea, But.... on Hands-On With The Nokia N-Gage · · Score: 3, Insightful

Its a shame they didn't pay attention to detail. The problems outlined by the article will definitely steer me clear of the system all together. A horrible UI, pain in the ass to change games, can't listen to the MP3 player at the same time as playing the games, etc.

I disabled all of the extra features on my cell phone because they weren't worth the extra $ every month. I tried to buy tickets for a movie once on it and when I went to pick them up they handed me 3 pair of tickets when I only ordered one! The UI for the browser would bring me pack to the confirm page each time I opened it - I decided then that the service was not ready for prime time.

I come from the school of "design the device/application to do its primary job right and do it well". If your going to try and sell me on half assed features, then I'm not buying. My phone handles phonecalls well and thats why I bought it. The NGage looks uncomfortable as a phone, and falls short on everything else.
