So in the name of freedom, we should suppress freedom?
Hmmm.... To bend the analogy in a devil's advocate sort of way, should we stop people from buying cigarettes to prevent second-hand smoke from hurting nonsmokers? To keep the inner city free of fear, should we restrict people from buying handguns? Does socialized healthcare make people more free because they no longer have to fear being without insurance if they try a job that fails them, or less free because they cannot fail? Is there a solution that allows freedom from all different points of view of what freedom is?
We have to fight spam from another angle, not by supressing people's rights to do stupid things.
Should people have the freedom to drive drunk? Why or why not?
Most people are wholly unaware of the fact that Jimmy Carter went to Georgia Tech and became a nuclear engineer for the Navy. Sam Nunn also started out as an industrial engineer at Georgia Tech before heading off to Emory & Emory Law to eventually graduate with a law degree.
Besides, the grandparent poster short-changes those of us who do have science/math backgrounds, who are passionate about politics, and who have considered getting more involved.
America hoards food that could eliminate starvation planet wide.
Worse, we destroy food that could eliminate starvation planet-wide just to keep the prices artificially high so that farmers can recoup their investment and not go broke. The problem has never been production but the impossibility of getting it to all of those people thanks to their f'ed up governments and our desire to actually make money from doing so. Of course the irony is that when we DO dump food aid on other countries, it outcompetes the local farmers and drives them into poverty. It's a lose-lose situation thanks to unequal production capacity and a lack of assured cooperation.
Well, of course it's true that the movie has more of its roots in Sky King with a little of old Superman scientist villains tossed in, but Doc Savage and the Shadow are far, far better known pulp heroes.
I don't begrude someone for not knowing Sky King. I begrudge them seriously for not knowing ANYTHING about pulp.
I kinda wonder - given it's background - if the guy actually knows the history behind it.
I'm sure that he does. Nazis were staple villains of 40s pulp fiction, which is the reason that they're recurring bad guys in the Indiana Jones movies, the Rocketeer, and the classic Doc Savage serials. Mad Nazi scientists, the Nazi quest for religious relics, and the Nazis invading Anarctica, the Hollow Earth, and other cryptogeographical locations are all staples of the pulp fiction era.
Yes, but the serious question is whether or not this so-called IPv7 will incorporate the Schumann resonance, tap into the collective unconsciousness of mankind, spontaneously create a little girl complete with family, and allow its creator to become some sort of god-like revenant.
Sure it's cool that a robot might build a house in a day, but would you really want to live in it?
Personally, I'd rather have my house built by 100 Amish carpenters over the course of one year.
Well, me too! That would seriously kick ass, but where are you going to find Amish carpenters to come out and build things for us outsiders?
On the other hand, I'd rather have a letter-perfect, robot-extruded, concrete house than a leaky, sagging, stick-framed wonder built by the developers around were I live.
Good job standing up against the little guy in favor of the business putting the squeeze on them. I hope you enjoy Comcast or whoever's service. You deserve it.
Seriously, when well-researced and written articles get tossed into the wastebin while poorly-spelled and outright wrong ones get put on the front page, it clearly gives the image that Slashdot does not care about quality. I used to complain about problems with articles and try to help improve the site, but I really don't see any reason to bother anymore -- the staff at Slashdot doesn't give a damn.
You're right. I finally got around to reading it right after I posted this. This is great news, since previously the rumors were that Disney had done the dub but had decided to just sit on it and "Castle in the Sky" and never release them after being underwhelmed by previous theater releases.
That's a pretty good question in my opinion, and TortoiseSVN's Windows shell-extension doesn't cut it. ("-1, Redundant" my ass.) If you're looking for something more like WinCVS, check out RapidSVN.
The idea that free competition results in the best product always winning is a naive myth that ignores the existence of monopolies and strongarm tactics. MS has used its revenue from Windows to finance the development of Media Player. Real (and others) must charge money to support their players and formats while MS does not. Regardless of the merit of the system, having a free player available gives MS and advantage over a market that they do not have to compete fairly in. This in turn encourages the creation of a host of media files which are only playable in Media Player. This allows MS to enjoy the benefits of vendor lock-in and the network effect to tilt the market further and further away from an even playing field.
By forcing MS to bundle 3rd party software on their system, the playing field is levelled somewhat. This actually restores competition whereas so-called "free" competition would inevitably result in a monopoly which is the opposite of a competitive market.
Free markets are just like any other form of anarchy. The strong conquer and the weak suffer. Many people approve of this but often forget that no one is weaker than the consumer. When a monopoly/autocracy forms, the consumer/citizen suffers.
It went the way of all lawless societies -- to exclusive dominion by the strong. Anarchy leads to autocracies; free markets lead to monopolies. Only responsible governance can prevent that.
I speak from personal experience when I say that you should really have those headaches checked out to see if they're real migranes or not. My mother used to have serious migranes, so when I started having thought- and motion-imparing headaches, my family assumed that I just inherited the problem. Ten years later, a friend suggests to me that my regular problem with headaches might be caffeine withdrawal and that I should pay attentiont to what I drink. Lo and behold, my habit of drinking 2-3 glasses of Coke at every restraunt meal clashed with my habit of drinking (caffeine-free) ginger ale at home.
Long story short, I quit drinking caffeine and started drinking water, and my chronic headache problem was gone. I've gone months between headaches (as opposed to a couple of days). My rare headaches hurt a lot less now, and I no longer have to worry about stammering, having facial ticks, or being extremely sensitive to light. While I miss the taste of Coke with my meal, I don't miss the sensation of a knife jamming through my left eye every time my heart beat.
Seriously, monitor your caffeine intake and get informed about the caffeine content of drinks that you enjoy. If you have an irregular intake, you should try going cold turkey to see if your headaches stop after a couple of weeks.
I take it that you're either a lacto-ovo vegetarian, or you've never had a strip of real bacon in your life, right? Those things are absolutely horrid, and I'll even eat turkey bacon (even though it tastes nothing like the real thing). Pork is just impossible to replicate with vegetable proteins.
Soy protein-based substitute foods never taste anything like what they're trying to replace, and I really wonder how an entire market segment deludes themselves into thinking that they do. The only meat-substitute I've ever seen that managed to capture the taste and texture of the original is Quorn mycoprotein "chicken" products. However, Quorn "beef" and "hot dog" products are utterly attrocious.
No. If I recall correctly, he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy.

Anybody remember when the real highway didn't have ads covering it?
Me neither.

You seriously need some pulp fiction in your education, kid.
I'll bet you've never even heard of Doc Savage.

Maybe I'm just watching too much anime...

Darn, and I thought my dream of Atkins-friendly, meat slurpees was finally closer to reality!
Put your money where your mouth is.
You'll never find an actual full quote of him saying that, because it was a deliberately misquoted sound-bite.
No, next thing you know, they'll be telling us that Al Gore never said that.
Of course, that won't stop the True Believers.
Look, when you make a sock puppet, do you use hand-woven argyle or cheap, Wal-mart cotton-blend?
Same principle, only with hooke... consultants.

(cabbage is a strumogen)
I tried looking that word up on Google, and I can't find an English explanation of it. What does "strumogen" mean?
Obligatory:
You're new around here aren't you?

I would take their stupid implant and#FA3T32FEAFf3#r325[NO CARRIER] ...and, what -- pick your handset off of your acoustically-coupled modem?

It went the way of all lawless societies -- to exclusive dominion by the strong.

I'm not following you. How does forcing company to bundle a selection of products instead of just their own solution "stifle competition?"
