Let's be honest, anything beyond very basic algebra is not needed for a great many jobs in this world. Not everyone is going to be an engineer, scientist, doctor, etc.
My son wants to be an auto mechanic, and since it is the only thing he has ever shown an interest in, I've strongly encouraged this career path. As bonus, this type of job can't be outsourced to India or China.
I can't think of any benefit to my son, or millions of other high school student to be forced to take Algebra II (I took AP Calculus in high school, but I was going into engineering). What I'd really like to see is a "Consumer Finance 101" type class as a mandatory graduation requirement.
Ignore new phones and get just about any Samsung Galaxy-S/I9000 phone off eBay. The Cyanogenmod guys have a quite usable port of Gingerbread 2.3.3 ported from the Nexus S now. It isn't quite mainline yet, but it works great:
My hope is that since the Nexus S is so new, and the Galaxy-S phones are nearly identical hardware, I'm now good for another couple years of Android versions. I've never been happier with my Captivate. Best phone I've ever had!
I don't know about the rest of you geeks, but my basic use of desktop Unix/Linux for work hasn't altered all that much since I was a student sysadmin in 1990. I spend most of my work day opening up various terminal windows and ssh (ok, that has changed:) to network and SAN switches all day long. I'm frequently working with a heterogenous group of 30-40 different systems\switches and I damn sure DO NOT WANT to lose the ability to minimize, maximize, or arrange as many damn windows on my screen as I care for. The single, full-screen application model is just fine for my Android phone, but it sucks on a desktop box.
Ughhhh. I guess it will be back to fvwm if this happens.
is going to pay $750 million PER FLIGHT for a private shuttle launch (and it will never be that cheap), when they can wait a few more years and pay maybe $100 million to SpaceX or Boeing or even United Space Alliance for a rocket launch in a new, much safer capsule.
This is all about cost. An analogy would be continuing to use a mainframe with a $1M/year support contract to do your accounting, when a $5k off the shelf server could do it just as well.
The current state of the art in robotics is far too limited. If they could build a robot that could cook, clean, do laundry/dishes, and help you get dressed, I'm sure they would be more popular.
Think of the Will Smith movie version of "I, Robot" where the robot cooks an apple pie from scratch. That's what you need.
Actually, THIS Libertarian got his economic theory from studying to get an economics degree in college. How about you?
That being said, hell no, I have no interest in Murdoch's magazine. I think he'll lose a bundle on this little experiment. The genie was let out of the bottle years ago, and he just keeps trying to stuff it back in.
Sadly, my son's high school doesn't have any programming classes. All their 'computer science' classes are just application usage, with a single class on 'web development' using one application.
In the mid-80s, I learned BASIC in high school in one class, then I took AP Computer Science my senior year where I learned PASCAL. These classes were offered through the Math department. Geek that I am, I was even president of the Computer Club in senior year. Modern high schools don't even seem to have such things.
The array they mean is really the MSA P2000 G3, which is a new 8Gb/s fibre channel array. Note that the array is OEM'd from Dot Hill.
I tried the 'exploit' on my array. Yes, I can log in with admin/!admin, and no, the admin account does not show up in the GUI listing. BTW, the "admin/!admin" combo was the default login on previous versions of this array, but for this version, the default account was changed to "manage". I'd guess this is a coding error, not some deliberate backdoor.
The article is wrong that the password cannot be changed. You can change it just fine from the CLI:
HP StorageWorks MSA Storage P2000 G3 FC System Name: MSA_P2000_1 System Location:XXXXXXXXX Version:L100R013
# set password admin Enter new password: **** Re-enter new password: **** Success: Command completed successfully. (admin) - The password was changed.
Verified that login is no longer possible via web GUI or SSH. Problem solved.
It sounds like some "real" archaeologists might owe Graham Hancock an apology. He's been saying for years that entire civilizations were swallowed up and lost at the end of the last ice age:
It is a myth that AT&T Android phones are all locked down. I'm running the Cognition 2.2beta7 Froyo build on my Captivate right now. There are ROMs and communities for a ton of Android phones at http://forum.xda-developers.com/ If you are smart enough to read Slashdot, you can figure out how to root and upgrade your phone ROM.

You've missed the point. You've already broken many laws and break more each day without even knowing it. When they become interested in you, they don't need to catch you. You're already guilty.
"The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws." - Ayn Rand
I honestly fail to see how any kind of "cyberwar" could do more damage than "shutting down" the Internet. Exactly how do these morons in Washington think most business is conducted these days? Do they really believe that we could all easily go back to doing business solely by phone, catalog order and the USPS?
You might as well label the kill switch with "Subtract 90% from GDP!".
I had my first millimeter wave radar scan at the Denver airport when traveling last weekend. I thought it was rather interesting, but wasn't impressed by their insistence that I had something in my pockets, until I turned them inside out to show they were empty.
Just the other day, my non-geek son was bitching to me about how he couldn't record a sound or voice, and make that a ringtone on his iPhone3G. A quick search on Android Market shows me several apps that do just that, most of them free.
Who cares? I got my Samsung Captivate from AT&T for a mere $99 on Sunday (plus the obligatory 2 year renewal). Beats the multi-hundred dollar price of the Nexus One, and people smarter than me have already figured out how to root it and sideload apps.
I've had it only three days and I LOVE THIS PHONE. Go Android!:)
"Since Day 1 of this I have been calling it a non-event, a manufactured controversy by global warming denialists trying to make enough noise to drown out any real talk on this topic. "
Hardly an unbiased observer. I, for one, really hope that there isn't anything to 'ClimateGate' but if you've read anything about it at all, you know that the problem wasn't the emails, but in the leaked data sets and source code. The emails show typical petty human behaviour. The data and source code suggest the possibility of cherry picking of data, and mathematical modeling to reach a predetermined conclusion. That is what worries me, but I admit I don't have the expertise to make a determination on my own.
Sunshine and openness is only way to ever end this debate over global warming. All research, results, and data sets should be publicly available. Is that really too much to ask?
No, the Ares V CAN'T loft anything to orbit, because it does not exist. Likewise the Saturn V could launch that much weight, but also no longer exists.
This is irrelevant anyway, as there is need whatsoever for a heavy lift launch vehicle. Build your spacecraft in parts and assemble them in orbit for vastly less money.
The bigger your launch vehicle is, the more it will cost, and the lower flight rate it will have. It will cost much more per pound into orbit. The only purpose for a heavy lift vehicle is to be a massive jobs program for NASA.

I'd love to see someone take a look back and learn some lessons from Microsoft's Allegiance.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allegiance_(video_game)
The 3-D space combat and more realistic physics were awesome, and the GUI was very intuitive. It definitely took a joystick to play right, however.
This game was way ahead of its time for 1999 and died way too soon. Curse you Microsoft for killing it!
