I remember when Best Buys first started popping up in my area they were actually pretty cheap, but I don't think anyone could claim that anymore.

I guess it just means we have to shop online if we want good prices...which really isn't that bad.

Honestly, if there's a major conflict between the goals of the devs and the goals of the community, a fork really seems like the best thing to do here.

I would suspect brand dilution is more to blame, as they branch out more and more. Users who prefer the iPod to the Zune, or the Wii to the Xbox 360, or now see Google as the big cheese in the online world may all have a less favorable impression of MS as a whole.

  11. It does, but... on Does It Suck To Be An Engineering Student? · · Score: 1

It's supposed to suck to be an engineering student. Engineering has a reputation for being a brutal major, and a lot of otherwise intelligent people wash out of engineering programs. That's what gives the degree its value in the job marketplace, though. Just managing to complete an engineering degree, regardless of GPA, is impressive to employers. It's also worth pointing out that many jobs that engineering graduates would be applying to would not accept candidates without engineering degrees, so grade inflation in other majors is pretty much moot.

Incidentally, I know when I've been thumbing through resumes, I've never paid a lick of attention to GPAs. To me, someone who plays up their academic achievements on a resume is probably just saying "I have no relevant experience."

Really I think it's just a sound someone typed out one day online and it caught on. It was probably some idiosyncratic sound that original person liked to use in real life. It's one of those sounds whose meaning is clear just from the sound of it. You don't make a 'w00t' sound when you're sad unless you're being ironic. Trying to look further into it and come with ridiculous etymological explanations is getting really stupid and further and further from the likely truth.

I remember w00p being around first on irc, and always assumed w00t was a corruption of it (for example purepak.irc had a built-in ascii drawing of a giant w00p, and that script was a revised version of textbox which was even earlier). I realize that this is anecdotal and only reflects my personal, admittedly sketchy memory, but it's pretty clear this "word" pre-dates any major online games with team play components. Well, maybe not...it could've come from all the l33t types playing nettrek.

People are annoyingly passive here...which is alright, because with my aggressive driving, I can take advantage of them. But what I find strange is how willing people are to blatantly run red lights after they turn - there's usually up to 3 cars that enter the intersection after the light turns red. You don't do this back east, no matter how aggressive you are, because the people the other direction will slam into you when their light changes.

A normal person will go through the normal story, maybe do a few of the side quests (the mark hunting makes a nice distraction, and it's available all along), and about when they get to the point in the game where it says 'Great! I'm part of that demographic too. What Sony isn't counting on is the number of people who are tired of waiting for the PS3 to come out and are damned if they're going to pay $600 (plus $70+ per game) for the damn thing, especially for a company that's shown itself willing to infect their products with DRM that can be harmful to the hardware of their paying customers.

I for one don't plan on buying any of the 3 next-gen consoles. I don't think I'm alone in this.

Well, I don't know about alone, but I don't think very many console gamers of any age will completely forsake the next generation. More likely, they'll wait and see what happens. If the PS3 doesn't completely bomb, and Blu-Ray and the Cell are relatively successful, then the hardware should come down in price pretty quickly. If, on the other hand, the PS3's reception is lackluster and the price stays in the 'insane' range, then we could see a lot of (North American) gamers heading towards the 360. And the Wii has the potential to be an out of the blue hit (I wouldn't think so, but hell, if you told me the DS was gonna be a smash hit before it was released, I would've said you were insane).

I really do wonder if Sony did any research into what sort of price range consumers would accept on a console. I mean, it's not like there are not ways to do this. Chances are they did, found out that this was too much, and ignored it. After all, Sony's whole strategy for not only to PS3 but the Cell and Blu-Ray is riding on this launch. I'm sure they just said, 'Damn it all, we can't turn back now...'
