Unquestionably a modern, high-speed rail system connecting major cities would be a wonderful thing to have. But are we even capable of such massive, national projects anymore? Especially with a government that basically dances to the tune of big labor unions?
Imagine Boston's "Big Dig" project to submerge I-95 through that city, with all its corruption, delays and cost overruns -- times a thousand. Hell, times a million. That's what it would be like to build a national high-speed rail system in the U.S. It would be a complete clusterfuck.
Truly I say unto you: we'll see the damn Twin Towers rebuilt before anything like this gets done.
This is true. In fact, Matt and Trey are on the record as saying (I'm just paraphrasing here from memory) - "we don't like extreme right-wingers, but we really fucking hate extreme left-wingers."
...if millions of people were to suddenly be forced to go without TV for a while, it would improve the collective mental health of the U.S.... maybe just a bit.
Author is specifically referring to enterprise client/server apps. That some dweebs, a few years ago, decided that web front-ends for such apps would be a "good thing" is tragic. Stand-alone, platform-specific front-end applications are infinitely superior in such an environment.
I've been waiting for someone to write this article for years. 5 Stars.
If you have a CATV-compatible television (and it's been a very long time since anything other than that was manufactured), then you, the cable-TV subscriber, will be fine, even without a digital receiver box.
The problem is that Cox, COMCAST & others have been misleading customers into thinking that they must upgrade to all-digital service, or their TVs will go dark. That's just not true.
...is that the movie selection is mostly crummy. A few diamonds in the rough ("No Country for Old Men" is in there), but the selection is nowhere near as broad as the DVD service. I guess that the licensing fees are to high for them to stream just the good movies.
To me, that makes the LG-Netflix-o-box not nearly as desirable.
You (but mainly parent poster) might be interested to know that the word is actually "amok" which is defined as a "psychic disturbance characterized by depression followed by a manic urge to murder."
Indeed, this is what it means to "run amok." Also refer to the classic Looney Tunes clip, "Duck Amok."
hmmm... this is either Informative or Off-Topic. Guess I'll leave that to the moderators to decide.

"WHY YOU LITTLE..." (*aaak - choke - choke*)
... the upside would be that Obama could then fire Ballmer.
Exactly. I would lose the damn thing within one week.

... aren't part of this story, but they really ought to be.
Please read the fine article, if you don't mind.

"before long, the iPhone is 'full of devil-music and Christ-defying smut'"
I think that would just help them sell more iPhones...

30 days seems reasonable to me.

I do churn my own butter, you insensitive clod....
This was, of course, foretold by that great sage Alice Cooper, back in 1974:

Coop's woman-machine was strictly analog, though... "brains of tape.... change the tubes" etc.
"How does a President take the blame for all of the bad things ... but can't take credit for any of the good things"
Just a wild-ass guess here, but I'd say it's because most people are idiots.
Only if there's enough plasma in your brain.

Wow. Talk about your damn revelations. Good to have you here with us in 21st century, Al...

Yep. Or even longer than that (just about in inverse relation to the ascendancy of the Web).
I didn't even know (or care) that Comcast still offered USENET. And they're my ISP.
The combination of a good news client and 3rd-party service (I use NewsBin and GigaNews, respectively) has worked great for me for more than a decade.
