Can we seriously not expect any bias from the generally left-leaning university academics? Or the LA Times? Seriously! TFA basically says that "Liberals are smarter than conservatives." I am calling bullshit on this one.

Please. The article is not news, is it a troll.

Microsoft: Are you listening? This user wants a consolidation of all the XP fixes into one service pack.

    Check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RoHS#Criticism

and you will learn why electronics have been getting steadily less reliable over the last 5 years or so. There is no lead allowed in solder any more! The way electronics have been made for decades.

I have no problem with restrictions on the other 5 substances. Those are known to be bad news. And lead leaching from old TV screens in landfills is a problem. But for the lack of a tenth of a gram of lead my f*cking iPod died (yes, RoHS. Cracked solder joints under a BGA part.)

It could take several more years for the electronics industry to fully deal with lead-free solder and get reliability back up. Meanwhile... buy the extended warranty!

I don't think that email postage will help.

Most spams have forged (fake) return addresses, and are inserted into the network through methods that are often illegal. So what would stop the spammers from using forged or stolen email postage?

I think a better solution would be to have a method to verify that the sender is authentic; that the return address is real, and that the person who sent the message is a legitimate user of the ISP that originally accepted the message. This could work like a "web of trust" where the ISP's mail server knows and vouches for the users, and upstream servers known and can vouch for the downstream servers. Admittedly, this would require changes to the RFCs and probably all of the mail handling software on the internet.

However, without a fix soon, email will become completely unusable. So I think this is a pay to fix now or pay more to fix later scenario.

  14. modern processors are designed with C in mind. on High-level Languages and Speed · · Score: 1
The article states that "The task of mapping C code to a modern microprocessor has gradually become increasingly difficult."

While this is true, it's not an impediment for 99.9% of programmers. Many modern microprocessors are not only designed to be programmed in C; they are optimized for it.

The key to fitting the code to the target CPU is in the tools. The hard part is in the optimizer, and that's where some OSS tools may be weak. It's one thing to generate code that will execute on a platform, but a completely different (and far, far more difficult) thing to generate code that will coax the maximum performance from a given CPU.
