  1. SMP on Doom 3 Hardware Guide Debuts · · Score: 3, Interesting

Nice article, though where's the multi-processor graphs? "Ultimate DOOM3 Systems" still only shows single CPU systems.

Any clues anyone? It seems the game is pretty much video card limited, but a 2nd CPU might flatten out the frame rates to a more even level instead of bouncing up and down from 17 to 60 FPS ...

  2. format conversion on New Walkman-Branded Hard Disk Player · · Score: 2

The NW-HD1's primary format is Sony's own ATRAC 3 Plus - other formats are converted to that mode when they're transferred over to the player.

Anyone know if the conversion is done on the walkman or by the host computer? Sounds like it'll slow down the transfer rates, and reduce audio quality (transferring between formats multiple times can't be good)...

  12. Re:Why did THIS cause lower crime number? on Chicago Police Force Wins CIO Magazine Award · · Score: 2, Insightful

Indeed - in the UK's last round of crime statistics, crime figures actually went up; simply due to the police recording and cataloging more incidents than before. Previously, minor misdemeanors and street punch-ups etc wouldn't make it onto records anywhere.

I would have thought in the Chicago case, there was a significant chance that with speedier database systems, more crimes could be recorded, not fewer...
