Nice article, though where's the multi-processor graphs? "Ultimate DOOM3 Systems" still only shows single CPU systems.
Any clues anyone? It seems the game is pretty much video card limited, but a 2nd CPU might flatten out the frame rates to a more even level instead of bouncing up and down from 17 to 60 FPS...
The NW-HD1's primary format is Sony's own ATRAC 3 Plus - other formats are converted to that mode when they're transferred over to the player.
Anyone know if the conversion is done on the walkman or by the host computer? Sounds like it'll slow down the transfer rates, and reduce audio quality (transferring between formats multiple times can't be good)...
Indeed - in the UK's last round of crime statistics, crime figures actually went up; simply due to the police recording and cataloging more incidents than before. Previously, minor misdemeanors and street punch-ups etc wouldn't make it onto records anywhere.
I would have thought in the Chicago case, there was a significant chance that with speedier database systems, more crimes could be recorded, not fewer...
I'm guessing that read/write time will be about the same as current CF cards, so it's not going to be steller...
As long as it's quicker than sreaming to hard disk over firewire from a dv camera, I'd be happy. This is the slowest part of the video process for me - waiting for the footage to stream off the tape in real time...
That'd be pretty cool... just roll out as much as you need. A couple of inches for an email or two, and a full page for web browsing or whatever. Just use a locking clip as on a tape measure to hold it in place.
Many thanks Anand - this article will be a great help to many small system builders being beaten to death by Dell; many (such as myself) cannot compete with Dell on budget Intel kit of the same spec.
Having an article like this to show potential customers will mean I can provide better performing systems at competitive prices using AMD.
Presumably they did the test at night so the passengers wouldn't be able to see anything and get scared... (apart from the 2001 Space Odyssey style mind-bending light show)

Anyone got a guide to dismantling the Xserve? - I think pbfixit.com's just melted.
We're talking about probe-bonding in the Cartman sense are we?
This thing is FILLED with typos, which is horrible for a reference manuel.
Horrible for a slashdot post too.
erm, don't you mean "microtechnology" - i.e. electromechanical devices on the scale of microns? Not sure where nanotechnology is used in a hard drive... correct me if I'm wrong.
Surely these two (along with repeated clicks of the windows update link) should be firmly at the top of the list ?
Using googles cache
[flamebait] So - a hairdresser and a spammer...? Who'd have thought it... [/flamebait]
Splitter!
I assume all that horsepower is needed to run a 3d desktop in Java...

Does anyone know if that's the case?
Nah - it's only 15Mb according to the story.... 8 times less.... Their movie server's still on fire though.
Nice pictures, but not sure I'm particularly keen on their multiple popup stuff.
I wonder how the system copes if there's a gale blowing & you're trying to graffiti a motorway bridge...
Looks exactly like my experiences of using OCR software.
...a pull-out display might be somewhat useful.

Great, but just don't forget and do the crossword with a pen...

Just in case light, moisture, radiation, scratches, marking, adhesive labels or whatever have got to their server....

...providing you use moderation...
I moderate this bubble as being overrated.
(Much like this post)
Sometimes I jump into an empty swimming pool and repeatedly bounce a 6-foot diameter beach ball on my head.
My parents aren't to blame for that, though...

(Page 8) is this correct? 18.4 Seconds to compile QuakeIII Arena Source Code on a 2600+ ? Maybe it's right, but I was expecting it to be longer.
Damn that's fast - all those months/years of id's hard work, only to compile in 18 seconds on a budget processor....

their batteries will be dead already...
