  1. Just an expansion of an existing program on Canadian ISPs Limiting Access To CBC Shows · · Score: 3, Informative

It's not just CBC news, but all bit-torrent that's been throttled by all the Large ISPs in Canada for a while now. The CRTC/Gov forced them to open up access so that smaller ISPs could resell bandwidth. Now, those same ISPs which charge less $$ than the big players, have had their bit-torrent throttled.

Note: this only affects ISPs which resell bandwidth. Those with their own equipment can still circumvent this.

It should also be noted, that ever since the beginning of the new year, that some companies in Canada (like Best Buy, Futureshop) have been offering the X-Box for $199 on "sale" without games and $229 with 1-3 games. So, I wonder, does this mean that I can get a "street price" of $179 Cdn? Anyone know how street pricing works?

I actually had to sign one of these statements at work & deal with this whenever I see the doctor/dentist/etc.

It seems that information already collected must be dealt with according to the act. Just because you collected it last year, doesn't mean you don't need consent to use it this year. Actually, my Dentist made me sign a form for them to share/get information with outside labratories.

If anyone has ever been to the street-markets in Bombay (or any other major Indian City) - you'll see VCD peddlers selling movies for less than $2.99. Most of them are bootleg and "screeners".... coming out 1 day after the official movie release in theatres. Don't think this won't stop that activity. In fact it might cheapen the price of VCDs to deal with this new "competitive threat"....

Well - if you recall tape drives were the "big thing" in backup about 5-10 years ago. I have looked at 10 year old tape backups & they work just fine. Maybe we need to trust good old reliable tapes. Or the other (faster) solution would be external hard drive backups.

  11. Refresh Rates for Gamin on Flat Screen Monitors Sales to Reign This Year · · Score: 4, Informative

Prices will fall that is inevitable, but for the gamer market (which is many, many people) - you need a screen that can refresh fast enough. Current "cheap" LCDs can't do this - a refresh rate of 40 ms is common. But, realistically you need 25ms.... have you ever played Quake on an LCD with a refresh of even ~30ms - it is wishy washy to say the least!

Fast refreshing LCD monitors won't be cheap for a while.

  12. Re:Good enough for gamers? on Integrated 3D Graphics Motherboard Round-Up · · Score: 5, Insightful

It does make sense from this perspective - integrate a cheap graphics core now. If the consumer wants to upgrade, most of these core have an AGP slot (if the mobo maker has one that is). Cheap now, Cheap later (when an decent AGP card usable for then-in-styles games is cheap).

It is also cheap in the future - when these mobos become outdated the law of supply & demand (and discounting) - will make this cheaper than the then-current motherboard - with the added caveot that you can build a really cheap system (ie, no vid card) - or you can buy an AGP card.... as some solutions like Nforce 2 have superiour memory controller solutions - even compared to intel/via's next generation (dual channel ddr for example).

  16. standardized locations, etc. on Is RPM Doomed? · · Score: 3, Insightful

I think the biggest thing we need with rpm (and other distro systems) is standardized package locations. That would help, *extremely*.... as well versioning control needs to be better. For example, I hate having to have 2-10 different versions of libraries due to programs requesting their own version, even though the newer libraries could do the job of the old ones. As well, when the rpm asks for another rpm which is not installed, but the libraries are on your machine (in the right location) it is frustrating.

I hate to say it, but maybe we need a standardized "registry" idea like in MS Windows? I hate to say it, but they do have a good idea with that.

How can Mozilla & Netscape (not to mention Opera & others) make a dent in MSIE's monopoly in the windows browser world? I think it is too late, but maybe with the 700 pound gorilla of AOL Time Warner behind it, they can fight the 800 pound gorilla of Microsoft. Maybe the new XP service pack will convince some OEMs (that want to cozy up to AOL) to include Netscape.
