I had this same scenario occur daily while I worked at a store. Another thing that happened a lot was people using their spouse's debit card (verified by PIN, not signature). Back in those days (early 90's), the modem-operated lines back to the bank went offline several times a day, and verification had to be performed by signature, and quite often customers would yell at me because the store could not let the goods to be sold to someone using a card that was not their own.

  10. Re:Of course no law was broken! on Beating Roulette With Computers & Lasers · · Score: 5, Informative

The chance of winning on the outside of the layout is 18 out of 37, as there is a 0 that makes all outside bets lose.

Betting on one number has 1 way to win, but 36 ways to lose. But the house pays odds as though you had a 1-in-36 chance of winning, not 1-in-37. So, the house has an advantage over you - in the long term average, they pay out $36 for every $37 they take back. You can easily work out mathematically that all the other bets (ie, splitting a chip across 2 adjacent numbers etc) work out to exactly the same house advantage. (it's about 2.7% or something)

In fact, short of actually using technology to predict the outcome or to affect the outcome of the spin, there is NO betting scheme, algorithm, pattern or method of placing bets on a roulette wheel that leads to any difference in the house's advantage over you.

You are absolutely correct, however, in your assertion in that you must know when to walk away with your winnings. An even more important skill is to know when to walk away after losing.

(In the USA, the presence of the '00' on the wheel actually doubles the house advantage again)

And finally, a corollary to your assertion that you have won hundreds of dollars at roulette: You have also, on other occasions, lost hundreds of dollars at it.

The concept is to produce a photographic record of the world, where the photographed locations are sampled evenly across the surface of the globe. (approximately - they are closer at the poles, but in those cases use only every second or third confluence). This is different to other outdoor photographic collections, where the images have an "artificial" grouping density around points of interest such as mountains, lakes etc. The idea is to produce a set of images where the ratio of "boring" to "beautiful" images approximates how the world is actually like, in terms of area.

I once worked in a department store in Australia. I sometimes performed the role of "door greeter", the person standing at the front door, the first point of contact for customers to ask directions etc. Part of this role was to immediately pick up the phone and contact security whenever one of a small number of "problem customers" walked into the store - known shoplifters, fradusters or problem customers who were rude or abusive towards staff.

On one occasion, such a person was in the store and started to argue and yell at the checkout staff, because she wanted prices from a sale that ended two weeks ago or something. When the manager arrived, this customer started to argue with him, and made one critical mistake:

Customer: "If you don't do what I want, I will never shop here again!" ...to which the manager replied "If you ever step foot in this store again, you will be asked to leave by our store security, or will be removed by the police if necessary."

Realising the error in her line of reasoning, the abusive customer simply turned around and left immediately.

  23. Roger Rabbit on Big Rigs Makes Play For Worst Game Of All Time · · Score: 1

I had an awful, awful game based on the movie "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" on my Commodore 64.

The game consisted of three "levels" that were essentially seperate games. The first one was a boring racing game that was incredibly easy, but took about 10 minutes to complete. The second level was an extremely frustrating puzzle game where you had to control Roger as he raced around tables in a restaurant, picking up plates as fast as other characters put them down - for about 20 minutes. The third level was better - a puzzle-based platform type game set up in the Acme Warehouse - you had to use various items, eg, pogo sticks etc to make you way through to the end. However, it was incredibly difficult, and you only had 1 life (!!!!) which you could lose in a myriad of ways.

You had to play through the first two games to get to the third one. Needless to say, the often brief attempt at playing the third level was not worth the bother of completing the first two, every time.

The person requesting this information stated that they want to get into using SLR cameras. Digital SLR cameras are still way above the specified budget.

Digital cameras within the price range are similar to "compact cameras", and typically have limited modes and manual settings. Anyone can use a point-and-shoot camera, but a person who is interested in learning photography as a serious hobby will need something with more settings.

Another reason to go for an entry-level SLR film camera is that you will be building up a collection of lenses and accessories that will be interoperable with any upgrade you might choose to do later on, for example, moving to a more expensive digital SLR camera body.

I've got a Canon EOS Rebel Ti (EOS 300V) and I'm really happy at the features and image quality I've got for the $$ I spent. It's a fantastic entry-level SLR camera. Another word of advice is you should spend as much now on a good lens as you possibly can - you won't regret it. A cheaper lens will give results that cheat you of the quality that the camera is possible of giving you.
